Poster on Barbados Forum Says That The Barbados Fire Service Accepted “Hand-me Downs” From The Toronto Fire Service
I saw on the Toronto CP 24 News last night, the Barbados Fire Chief accepting a donation from the Toronto Fire Service of used fire-fighter protective clothing and equipment. As a proud Barbadian who has always considered us as a leader among the Caribbean nations; could not help but think. “Is this what we have come to”?Don’t get me wrong, it is good to see the recycling of good equipment that otherwise might have just been dumped, but I could not help but feel that, have we reached the stage that we have to go with hat in hand looking for hand-me-downs to supply our fire service. Most Barbadians do not consider themselves as Third World yet why does our government let one our most important public service branches be treated as such.?
Maybe I am just a little too PROUD of our PROUD little nation.

The information was posted over at Barbados Forum. For some reason the message by the poster, who appears to be a Barbadian living in Canada, conveyed sadness. BU has interpreted the last sentence of the post which the poster highlighted in the colors of Barbados to mean that his pride as a Barbadian was dented after watching the broadcast. To be honest in the BU we feel the same way in the BU household. Barbados Fire Chief Mayers, if you have to accept the old equipment then do it away from the public glare.
What is the message which our leaders are sending? We spend millions on a multiplicity of project but we have to accept “hand-me-downs to supply our service.”

Well David, it would seem that the AG does not know the shit that is going on in the service but I know for sure that he do. He just does not care. You know when he will pay attention, when elections come around. The service is in a bad, bad sorry state!. The moral of the firemen at a all time low, the fire chief is an idiot and could never step in Mr velmo Cadogan shoes as he was a real good man. The present chief talks down to everybody and insults thems, he does not ran the service, as he does whatever a certain SO man in a senor position tells him to do, he can not think for himself because he is uneducated for the position. I pray to the Lord that he would help us. People just coming to work to get a salary because the place is sick and sick bad. My question is what is the Association doing for the people, a lot of us are thinking about stopping our contributions to it because they do nothing for the people. They only fly around and spend the money in luxury living. Do you really think that in this day and age that we should be accepting hand me downs? We say that we are a proud people but are we really? Somebody help us please…………………!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Puzzle, would you need to e-mail them? They can only be asses if they are in a department and don’t know what is going. They want to be ‘professional’ in some areas and the areas that they should be, they are not. Why don’t they call a meeting or visit the stations and talk to people on a one to one basis. Would I have to suggest this!

Proper management is needed in the service. Mr PM please look at this when the Chief goes home in May. Do not give it just to the next person in line but to someone who has the service at heart. This can be a person in the srevice or out of it. People are being promoting according to who like who and they are getting into the service through family relations. I know people that would do good in the service and have been writing for years but can’t get in. The place needs restructuring from top to bottom, it is top heavy as the most educated people are at the bottom and the assholes are at the top.

Firs and foremost regardless of what we think or believe because of PRIDE. We are a THIRD WORLD NATION and this is a fact. Having said that I personally don’t feel that had anything to do with the fire gear donation.
My next point is did Canada not donate used airport equipment and technomogy to Adams Airport? What is the difference?
Plus to end my comment, yes were the place being managed properly and money that this Government seems to have an endless supply of would be spent on the things that were important. Therefore you are still partially correct we are dealing with “ASSHOLES” although that too is not an appropriate description for them because an asshole is a USEFUL thing!

hello …no name…. i see nothing wrong with the fire department accepting used EQUIPMENT. We do it all the time as barbadian citizens for example recondition cars…. But what people are flaring up about is the used fire protection gear,which are fire fightin suits (jackets and pant)… As a normal human being,when the body is in an environment of high temperature and a wearing a half inch thick insulation(fire fighting suit)…..that NORMAL individual would lose body fluids by sweating and the body fluids are absorbed by that half inch thick insulation…… what i am really trying to say my friend it that its unhygienic for someone to wear garments which was worn by another individual that serves the purpose of body fluid an potential pathogenic absorption e.g underwear,sweatsuits etc… please note that diseases like hepititis can be contracted that way

Let’s deal with two of the topics within the blog. First, the Fire Chief and second, Used Protective Clothing and Equipment.
I can see from the outside looking in that there is a problem with the selection of the Chief. Within the Government Service we will always have a problem with the famous word ‘Supercession” which we have to live with once you are in the public service. This same writer would have joined with the others if a recent employee was given the Chieftan position. You don’t have to be a University graduate or from the status quo to be the chief. If the fires are outing…Who Cares.
Secondly, we are still look at as a “Third World Country”, forget the wishes of we being a First World Country down the road, we have to deal with our present position NOW. We have to realistic, probably, the term might be used as “USED”, but in those countries, if you take a product out of a box and look at it, that term is USED, we see vehicles coming into this country as USED , yet we see more accessories and better designs than the so-called NEW vehicles. So let’s deal with real issues, since this is the only problem that you highlighted.
These are questions I would like answered. Is the writer of the blog a member of the Fire Service? Anonymous are you a fire officer, why the jealous passion in your post? “One not so blind mouse”, I can see that you are not a fire officer, but trying to create mischief by quoting “my agenda is to agitate the system and cause a positive reaction to spread training,incentives and merit across a level playing field”. This I understand, But should you be crucifying and degrading the Chief or should you focus on the head of the Civil Service? And remember the Unions are active, so forget that public sector nightmare alias “Supercession”.

These individuals were just speaking their minds,how they feel and see it .Are you aware that the fire department is a paramiliatary entity therefore the union cannot be included in this matter? I am impressed about your talent which is reading a contributors column and predicting their frame of mind and area of employment …COOL!!! Anyway , I am a member of the fire department and I conclude that the main source of these two individuals fustration is the capitalist actions of the departments administration.the ongoing training process only caters for a selected FEW and the masses are neglected… Supercession is not the issue of these two individuals,and hence you are wrong about ‘anonymous and 1 not so blind mouse’ these are two of the most highly qualified individuals in the department and we dont see supercession as the root of the problem but uneven training distribution… We should clean our house before we attempt to clean the village….. If these hand me downs are OK for Canadian fire fighting I say they are OK for Barbados firefighting. But here is another thing.
Why are all the bad things going to happen to firefighters because they are using second hand equipment as you propose? How many people in Barbados and other countries buy, accept and wear second hand clothes without the dire problems you are predicting the firemen/women might get because of this donated fire gear?
Let us keep the debate on an even keel.

I am sure you have YOUR reasons for being angry at this situation but anger is causing you to lose perspective and decorum.
This Post started out asking what we felt about our Fire Dept accepting used fire equipment from the Toronto Fire Department. It has declined into the gutter with many points not being valid.
If someone wants to say it is an embarassment to have to accept the gear, or that it hurts certain Bajans pride I can understand those positions though not necessarily agreeing with them. But to go the route of the equipment having the potential to spread disease is truly nuts!
The equipment given were not jock straps or underwear.
People buy or are given far more intimate second hand apparel and it is perfectly safe.
Many people as you know as acts of charity give to the poor left over food from functions or private tables with little fear of giving the poor diseases, food poisoning etc to those receiving.
I think a better argument could be made in asking why would the fire department have to accept used fire gear when the Government has millions it seems to spend on everything else under the sun. I done!

I can see clearly that you’ll are not understanding what is going on here and yes I am a fireman. The fire service is in need of some much needed attention because we have real problems in the department. The top brass does not care about their men’s future, family, education and personal problems. Now if you’ll were members how would you handle working in a place like this?. Maybe you have not observed but my workmates are expressing themselves about the crazy behaviour that is being exhibited within this department. Ref. the used clothing, it is not right and once I know, I will not be wearing any and that is final!!. We have real problems and we need people that can change things to really help us. People have spoken to many people in authority at government departments that can do something, everybody knows the problems but they just don’t care. I just want the chief to go home as late as tomorrow if possible!. A time is going to come when there will be many fires and no fire officers to work and they will be nobody to save life or property, we deserve respect because when we leave our wives and familyon a daily basis, we don’t know if we will ever see them again. This is a very dangerous and stressful job, one that you have to be a team players to survive. You guys are not in here but I would really like you to spend a day as a fireman with the Chief telling you ignorance, then you can speak on any matter pertaining to our demise. I want the Nation, Advocate, CBC and starcom net to know that we are being treated like dogs, please somebody write about it!!. We are losing our mind and pride in this job due to the current management.

Let me say this to you with the greatest of respect.
All of what you say if correct is shameful and a disgrace to the firemen/women serving the people of Barbados. But I want you to focus on the points I was and am trying to make.
I and I am sure most of us have little or no knowledge of the deplorable working conditions you have outlined and have every right to be pissed off about. If true it is a goddam disgrace!
But here old boy is what you have to focus on as far as my comments are concerned.
The Post when originally made did not make any of us aware of the working conditions you describe. We were merely OR I WAS SO HELP ME GOD commenting on how I felt about the Toronto Fire Department making the donations of fire gear.
Anonymous your brothers and sisters in the Fire Department in Toronto probably felt that they were doing a good turn to you guys/gals when the donation was made. You or me will never know exactly what was said to them or how they were approached for them to make the donation in the first place. I am sure they were not told or are aware of the politics and working conditions causing the outcry like yours.
As you can imagine if any of them read this blog I would think they would be equally pissed for two reasons (1) they were not given the facts as you are outlining them (2) they probably feel that you guys/gals have no appreciation.
But let me also say if you read my responses I have always said the Government should have had the money to buy new gear for you firemen/women.
The point we have to keep focused on is, the donation and donators were done with good intentions and the donors know nothing I am sure of what you are telling us. They did what they did out of an act of kindness.
The issues you are concerned with are Barbados BLP Government and homegrown ones and is completely unrelated.
You have my complete empathy and knowing this Goddam Government I have no reason not to believe what you are saying.

I have read all the comments with extreme interest and would like to post my own comments about both lines being followed by contributors.
I am a Bajan firefighter in the UK and have been associated with similar donations that prompted this discussion and also applied for the Chief Fire Officer’s position when Velmo Cadogan retired.
I have had contact with a number of the Caribbean fire services and they all differ depending on their status within government or how they are viewed by the public. In my opinion Barbados has the highest standing in the Eastern Caribbean and amongst the highest across the entire region. For that reason Barbados firefighters have experienced better standards than most and they should expect to receive the best that can be afforded at all times.
In 2004 we donated fire gear to St Lucia and Grenada services and both were more than grateful for everything that we could offer. This was because St Lucia fire service is poorly funded in comparison to Barbados and Grenada needed to rebuild after the huricane.
Because of the lifing policy we have for allof our equipment and the changes in legislation for technical standards for protective clothing we will change gear after about five years. Much of the equipment that was sent was brand new but had just become obsolete. The rest was used and we could not confirm that it had all been cleaned before shipping so that was covered by an instruction to the receivers to clean all unpacked uniform before re-issue.
There is an issue about hygene but providing the kit is cleaned as instructed by the supplier there shouldn’t be a problem, in fact most servies will keep used, cleaned kit in stock for emergency issue.
So you guys deserve the best and should get the best if its available. There is a chance that the Canadian offer was the best that could be afforded at the time. That does lead to ask the question, Why?
If things are all fine in the management of the Barbados Fire Service then why should it not be planning and budgeting for the replacement of firefighting gear as it has always done in the past? What has changed either internally or in the relationship with government? I am not qualified to answer or comment on either of those points.
The firefighters have offered their perspective on the internal management and whilst I accept that there is always a gap in thinking between managers and the troops, the service managers should not be dismissing or choosing not to listen to workforce concerns. A professional service is a well trained and well equiped one.
Just to touch on sucession planning. Yours is a small service and there is limited opportunity for development and promotion, and so promoting from within is naturally the preferred option. Every post that goes to an outsider is a break in the promotion prospects of all. However, there is something to be said for bringing new blood every now and then. A different way of thinking and alternative experiences can bring its advantages.

Wayne McCollin first of all commiserations at not getting the firefighting job in Barbados. We note your feedback on the circumstances how handmedown equipment is usually dealt with in the examples you offered.
However we wish to make the point that the disgruntled firemen who have been posting to this topic seem to have more of a concern with the management style and practices of the current system.

Why the attack on McCollin? He was only presenting a different perspective on the situation. The Government knew that Chief Mayers was an unsuitable candidate for the post. Yet, they appointed him Chief only God knows why.
The Chief had continued to make bad decisions that reflect poorly on the Fire Service. Moral is at an all time low, this is what you get when you place square pegs on round holes. It is time for change the department deserves better, Barbados deserves better. Lets hope that this latest situation will his last major embarrassment before he goes home.

I’m not certain that I was being colonial in my thinking or comments but if that came through then I’m truly sorry.
I don’t think it was necessarily the case that the old colonial ‘masters’ were offering hand outs. in our example this was me and other black colleagues seeing a need in the region, that we still relate to in many ways, and wanting to see our sisters and brothers in the profession having the best chance they can in staying safe.
I take it from the colonial comment that there is a deeper issue at stake here. I also realise that being an outsider any further comment I make will offend some if not most of those who post here.
At the time of independence I’m sure that a great deal of thought went into what was to be the country’s motto and ‘pride and industry’ was a fair representation of Barbados’ aspiration for itself and the future.
Through industry and hard work Barbados did become a place that we all could become proud of. But is there a danger in that and does pride indeed come before a fall?
The Island’s success gave it and its people the rightful confidence in what had been achieved and a true sense of pride and expectations to match.
So as I said in my earlier posting, if our firefighters have deserved the best they should get the best. But the best does come at a price. And money is part of the reality check for all Bajans.
How much will the Dollar get for your money at this point in time? If firefighters need new uniform that has to be imported from Europe or North America. I questioned the planning and budgeting of the service management to match demands but if you considere the world financial position at this time that budgeting can’t be easy.
I don’t know the facts so can only speculate like everyone else posting here. I am also not suggesting that Bajans should be too proud to beg but what do you do when reality strikes?
I am humble enough to accept that just having a passport doesn’t make me a Bajan and having been reared in Britain has certainly influenced my thinking, but there is a chance that there is more to this situation than first meets the eye and it doesn’t necessarily make to big a dent in the nation’s pride.

I am glad that someone has started this site so that people can see whats really going on in THE BARBADOS FIRE SERVICE . There are alot of problems within the service which are falling on deaf ears and blind eyes. The Chief fire officer can only do what he is told (by he lackies) to do because he lacks management skills and we all know that so don’t bash him poor fellow. The service is divided into two catagories (1) the officers that get everything and (2) the officers that get nothing. And it has become very annoying for some of us but i want to tell my workmates of the service to please give the public 150% when we have to respond to any emergency. I don’t care about the fire service no more my only concern is the general public because if you don’t hold a shirt tail or talk names in the service you don’t get nothing (e.g) NO TRAINING, NO COURSES, NO EXPOSURE . But the good ones that doing all of the degrading things in the service are the ones that are getting everything. Alot of dirty things are going on in the service that needs to be address urgently but the people at the top are just sweeping them under the carpet. I will bring all the dirty linen to light ……… to be continued.

This may suprise most people but I DEALING WITH DIRTY PEOPLE SO I AM GOING IN THE DIRT WITH THEM.. I am going to expose these serpents that lie in the darkness poisoning peoples minds and feeding on the goals and aspirations of other fire officers. These BASTARDS are doing a lot of immoral things and our statue that..THING we call a fire chief is doing or saying nothing . All he does is compliment these serpents who by the way are fire service instructors. These so-called instructors were appointed to the post by that ‘THING’ .They began instructing the recruits and instead of instilling disciplin ,morals and training ,these snakes were more busy trying to instilled their penises into the recruits and other female instructors. Hope evrybody had a merry xmas.I want to give you all something to think about . You all may reply on this blog or discuss it among yourselves. Now,during this christmas season , an order circulated thoughout the Barbados Fire Service that ‘no lieu leave (for readers outside this department ,extra off days) is to be granted until further notice. However a female officer was granted ,christmas day and boxing day off,leaving the other stations short-staffed . Please note,I have nothing against this female officer,she has great potential and is one of the very few individuals within the service who has principles.But my issue is against that unethical sick minded NCO who granted that leave. He is well loved within the department by that statue (fire chief) and many high ranking officials. He is one of those horny instructors I have mensioned earlier. One suggession I must make though,he should play the lottery because he is one lucky man,this man wrecked so many mariages and relationships that its a wonder that he is still alive,he is my hero. A true yardfowl with a box of doggies, he disobeahed an order and deserved to be brought up on disiplinary charges but this is a corrupt department so therefore he is squeeky clean

They are too many misdeeds and injustices being carried out in this department. We need to put pressure on the Association to function. Fire officers also have a responsibility to report their concerns so that action can be taken stop gathering in the barracks and talking. Fight for representation don’t give the Association an excuse to say they are not being informed about the injustices. There is strength in numbers, we have the power.

I am very saddened to hear that nothing has changed at Probyn Street in recent times.
Its 6 years since my last connection with the fire house.
It is very sad. The fire fighters in Bim are a good lot. Most of them are great folk but there are poorly led…. and hardly respected.
Unfortunately, most of the members at the bottom are more educated and rational than their superiors, who sit at the top because of length of service rather than by brilliance of firefighting.
We all remember when Velmo was promoted to Chief from his longstanding desk job of pushing paper (because of his party affiliations with the BLP). The man didnt know how to out a fire of a match stick burning.
What the fire fighters need is a serious set of inhouse studies either by distance education coupled with some relative courses at UWI and the BCC, so that they can progress through the ranks by a series of education along with tenure of service.
The psychology of sitting around all day waiting for something not to happen, but to be ready for when something untowards happens is not easy. This must be addressed.
All this was proposed by a certain person who worked very closely with the fire fighters then and who thought that the nations fire equipment and the lives of men should not be entrhusted to men who were under distress and duress because of thier work conditions.
I personally could not work in the BFS under the likes of the chief officers and the ass licking NCO’s in the BFS.
One well remember the day when the Arch Hall Station opened, and during the fire drills, a few fire officers had breathing difficulties, and though the Medical Officer assigned to the department was present he had to send the men to hospital, as there was NO equipment or supplies to treat the men. There was not even a first aid station or kit with aspirin.
There were new fire trucks though.
This was under Mia’s watch as AG.
So people dont fell bad if the BFS accepted second hand firefighting equipment. Its easier for them to get a million dollar truck than $3.00 in aspirin tabs, and daily supplies of Gatorade and other rehydration fluids for use in major fires and thereafter.
I well remember the time when a truck was damaged in Station Hill and Velmo was more worried about the truck than the men.
One remembers Fire men week and other events held by the fire department that were never attended by the AG (under whose watch the BFS falls) or any one from the ministry.

Well within the BFS we have a training unit which looks after the well being and educational needs of the fire officers,this unit is so well structured, that despite your academic possessions and you are not in fire chief Mayers or any of his lackies good books you are doomed. Can you believe that a department with 240 plus members, seven selected members of them keep reaccuring at every course that this training unit advertise, can you believe that a junior fire officer is selected to teach senior fire officers ‘the tying of knots’ this junior fire officer is an instructor and another instructor untied this persons marital knot. This training unit suppresses individuals who are not yardfowls. The Sub. Officer in charge of the training unit who has the same last name as the chief by the way, I watched him from the time he was young in service and I said to myself that he has potential but now

I heard that the BFS is again show cased in the Heat Magazine, so please everybody go out and get a copy because it real hot. I have some opinions about some things that were said, so I will address them now. First about the firewoman getting lieus, yes it is wrong but we do not know the circumstances in which they were given and two, it was said that she has potential and principles, this I can not see. Where were you a couple of years back when she showed her true colors or are you one of the men that still want to screw?But what I would say is that she is trying very hard to change her image and I am proud of her for that, keep up the work , you should successed.There are very few women in the service that want to do something with themselves and if I was not married and looking for a girlfriend in there, my picks can be counted on one hand. From the beginning with me coming on this blog, I said that the Association is a waste of time, you’ll now seeing it? wanna late!. My issue is when the police fraud squad gonna come and investigate Patricky ,he was getting away with murder for too long, I would ask him where the social club eight thousand dollars gone .I remembered when ’shit hit de fan’ a few years ago when a fireman with an unusual surname was accused of stealing the social club money,during an ‘in house’ investigation ,too many anomilies and inconsistencies appeared . It was suspected that other individuals had to be part of this diabolical scheme , shortly afterwards the youngest fire service instructor was sent on an overseas training course, not for his natural ability but to be silenced . I know that the youngest instructor would have turned a blind eye an watch the fire service vipers destroy that youngsters job an reputation.I could never do that because it would bother me for the rest of my life ,having such info and watch an innocent man pay , that young instructor has great potential in the fire service but lost out big time on morals and ethics .

Happy 2008 everybody !! ‘Looking in from the outside’ reason with me for once,dont you think that the bulk of the anger and frustration is due to this CORRUPT STYLE OF MANAGEMENT. First of all,let me note the changes that would make BFS a better workplace (1) Get a new fire chief that has academic ,ethical and moral qualities not like this poppet we got in office rite now (2) Rely on a computer program to randomly select officers for training courses,this would eliminate the wicked yardfowl nasty acts by the current training unit.Every BFS member would now have a fair chance. (3) Employ an auditor to monitor all business transactions which occur between the social club /association and outside entities,this would save the BFS embarrassment in the future by re-enlisting some of these sticky fingered fuckers as inmates in Her Majesty Prison.. Or in other words saving them from themselves (4) Give the gasbag full co-operation by promoting him in charge of training of the fire officers(not the recruits) in the training unit I think his knowledge and ability is wasted when working on the shift (he is not an apple of my eye but I giving jack his jacket,his knowledge of the job and motivational skills are at a high standard).(5) The BFS needs a PROPER criteria for promotion and standard operating procedures not just a list of rules and objectives rigged up by the ‘fraud squad’ to benefit only yardfowls .. I agree with you on a lot of matters. Firstly, putting gasbag in charge of trainning unit might be a good idea but also putting somebody who can help control him because we would not want to embrace victimization. Like I rightly said we need to have a system where canidates are chosen for recruiting fairly, I have been saying this for years, too much family is in here and it is not fair to the public. About the CFO, sometimes we see things happening and just say to ourselves, oh the chief wicked. When we really sit down and think about it, to me this is not true, our cfo relies on other officers for imput and their thoughts but the people who he turns to for guidance are the ones who are interested in themselves that is why the service is like this. We need a CFO from outside, maybe the government can give this person a two to three year contract just to clean up stuff within the department. This person should be a good example in terms of especially dealing with administrative and welfare matters. Auditing within the department, I totally agree with you on that. In turns of courses, you can choose fire officers, male and female in the category of young, not so young and old in terms of years in the service, not age as this should not really be a major factor. Promotions should be based on ability, qualifications and personal standards regardless of male or female. There must be a balance and consistency where promotions are concern, don’t give people rank because he is my friend etc. but because he deserves it, so that when he is promoted, people will say he is a good man, good NCO and a good person in general. Being promoted is not about you being better than somebody else but about being a good supervisor, someone you can talk to if you are having problems that can affect your work and a person who cares about his junior officers. This is a new year and we need to take action because the fire service is not a bad place to work but it is the people that are in change that is making it hard for all others and I am not only talking about firemen but about everybody who works in the department from maids up. I really hope that this year would be much better then the years gone by, that we can try to start living as one big family, care about each other and look out for each other. It breaks my heart to see what the service has come to in the past 15 years since I have been in here. Let us stop bashing one another and work together to make this service the best in government. I pray that we would be more professional and not let 2008 be like 2007. God bless.

This blog is not for gossip but to address geniune concerns, we are thankful for all the knowledge that we shared in here but it is time for us to make some decisions. We need to put some pressure on our association or stop our fees, we need to come together as one and plan our actions carefully. For us to be heard this must happen before the middle of the month, we can talk until the cows come home about the problems that we are having but if we do not do something about this situation, we are back at square one. We are glad that BU is contributing to an effort by management at the Fire Service to improve relations/conditions for all. If we can make a suggestion. If they have begun to show good faith because of the situation where you have had to ‘air the dirty’linen’, maybe you guys need to respond and start to offer constructive feedback at this point. The service which you provide is tagged an essential one and it is important for national security that both sides start to move to a win-win position.
Hope you take the feedback in the positive way in which it is meant.

David, thank you for your comment, I think that the blog has brought a great media throughout the fire service for the fire men or women to ‘blow off some steam’. But as smoke cat said in his last contribution the positives of this same blog was evident where we had the evil forces within the department silenced . I send my apologies to those bystanders who were exposed to prove a point of the corruption within the department (not that statue the chief,I meant every word I said about him). Despite all the bashing and all the gossip that we have done in the past , I must say that The Barbados Fire Service has in its possession about 99% highly skilled workers in many fields , the missing link is the unity of all levels. After elections , it is evident that a good few people are gonna catch heart attacks not only because the Owen Arthur administration may or may not lose this elections but a good few fire officers gonna get the shock of their lives when they realize that they done all their yard fowling in vein. These fire officers would do any thing for a promotion, I would really like to see the faces of these bastards when these promotions are read out, “oh my! what a sight for soar eyes” My only regrets are the two fire officers who will not be successful in this cross fire ,these are the youngest instructor and the red short one. I believe that these guys will make very good NCOs if given a chance they execute a good knowledge of the job and practice human resourses management unlike the others who threatened to victimize individuals if they are promoted. That tall dark individual is a true judas and only thinks of himself. He want to use the LF promotion as a steping stone to acheive power in his corrupt mind

Food for thought! Guys, study this a minute. I read that they are courses and seminars that the junior fire officers (less than 12 years of service) are sent on. We must all follow the patterns here, check and see when they have these little irrelavant courses and seminars in which they send any and everybody on.
Brothers and sisters dont let these frauds in the training unit fool you. They usually give these courses when something big (courses that have specialized qualities within the department ) is comming up and the likable will attend. They only send anybody on these courses that have nothing to do with the fire service but the lackies attend the big courses.
I am not speaking about the guys that went overseas with the kleptomaniac because they paid for that course out of their pockets but I am speaking about the free ones where a few individuals went on ALL of them
The judases in charge of the training unit are up to no good they are corrupt and dangerous especially 100-6=?, he is not to be trusted

A rumour is out the the fire service is recruiting 16 people this year … Lets see if these new recruits will be given appointment letters before the 32 junior fire fighters.

Chief Mayers is a poor manager , actually he is the worst chief we ever had . Some of his stinking lackies are saying that he is the best because of the number of training courses that came up under his management. Yes but we should investigate the relevancies of 90% of these courses to the department, then let us investigate the high number of reaccuring individuals in the remaining 10% of the fire service oriented courses . You all would actually see that the elite squad members dont attend any shitty seminars, or irrelevant courses. They attend the specialize courses.
The sub officer in charge of training is a fraud and he trying to trick the fire officers but we all know quality is way better than quantity.

The union leader is wrong for trying to influence island wide industrial action on a group of people who doesn’t know the right procedures to go through to start protest. Ignorance of the law and your rights is no excuse. The information is available for each union or association member but our society has decayed to such an extent that we rely on the television and verbal communication to gather knowledge of our own rights.
The union leader is starting to scare me. I wasn’t aware that we have Barbadians who prefer to see an economy fail just to make a political party look as though the citizens were neglected. Or an individual who would feel better to witness a currency devaluation so that his or her party of preferance would win in the next election.

The situation in the B.F.S. is getting worse and worse everyday the moral of the fire officers are at an all time low and nobody interested in the welfare of the fire officers the chief fire officer allows you to know he does not care because he is soon going home and the remaining officers just buying time so they can get in position and continue to make the place more corrupt then it already is. The control room at HQ needs an a/c unit and proper chairs but apparently we aren’t important because the officers, office staff and the new decked out conference room more important than we, the fire officers. I am so glad for this blog, it brought about a lot of positives and negatives about the contributions. One positive fact I must mention is that I am constantly being approached by colleagues and questioned about matters pertaining to my comments I have made in the past. They have actually done research and found out the level of truth in my contributions. I only call a spade a spade thats all.
I am constantly being asked the big question. “Why dont you comment about the issues within the department?” Well (sigh)…. Lets say that if I have to make a comment about the way I really feel about things going on within this department, due to the passion in which I express myself I would be either targeted or be brought up on disciplinary charges the following day. I prefer to keep my mouth shut on this blog about BFS matters.

He was bought by the imperialist administration which is similar to that Professor from UWI a few years ago who preached about economic enfranchisement. This popular man was spreading the word about our situation where a small race within our population controlled the majority of the wealth within this country.
The radical professor had bajan people thinking along the lines of unity among small businesses and as blacks, the majority should own the largest share of the economic pie. Now let me start first of all by saying as a representative of all the outcast and strugglers ,I would like to THANK fire officers 150-14=? and 100-99=? for the hard work that they have done within this department to spread the knowledge from their academic achievements. I sat in on one of their lectures some time in the past and I saw a very high standard of training from 1 of the 2 of them (I am not that stupid to tell wanna which one and let the people dat want my head pun a platter put 2 and 2 together).
Anyway , I think that these two guys are highly UNDER-RATED . They should be given recognition for their contributions to the service and we can see that they are not helping the fire officers for personal gain, they just want to make a change in the standards of the department . I would like to thank them personally but my identity might be revealed. Just keep up the good work fellas .

I have a concern about my eyesight or my sanity where I was watching my tv this evening and saw an unusual site where the SAR unit responded to an emergency special service and these rocket scientist got a crane to remove a vehicle from a ditch while the trapped victims were inside, then they turn the vehicle onto the tire side then proceeded to remove the roof and free the victims. Ok lets say that I am stupid but isnt it protocol in vehicular extrication to stablize the vehicle before removing the victims ? What form of stablization includes removing the vehicle and then remove the victim? Is this laziness or ignorance ?

I was absent from this blog for a while had some technical problems, anyway just want to put over a few real things about the problem plague place we call the fire service. First let me say that we have too small an amount of staff, for the place to be so corrupt. The normal fire officer rep 80% and the LFO’S and up rep 20%. The job is very stressing as it is already and i could add long hours,under paid ,victimised, an so on, but what do we do? We talk about it, and what does our management do? Allow they work masters to continue . How fair is it that we have 200+ officers on this island and only 30 or so are repeated picked everytime certain courses come up. Then they come back amoung us so selfish and stupid that none of what they were thought (on our behalf ) they would not even share. I wonder if there would ever be a time, when the association board members understand, that most of the offices (n not a select few), pay fees so as to get representation when we are being victimised.
Pharoah, Socialist, Scorpion Queen, Stone Cold, These are some of the only real humans among us, i know they are more out there who feel the same way we do but, either too frighten or looking for something. So they can’t add a comment on whats going on. I was made to understand that a F fire officer from S J S carries out the duties of a photo shoot vehicle model when on the fire ground. I also hear that the NCO frighten fa loud mouth hubby so he tells her nothing, could you imagine that.

David, you are absolutely right in stating that the Fire Dept did attend a fire at that location before. However, you need to ask yourself how is it that this building was being used as a commercial property and also a residential dwelling without the approval of town planning .
Then you can start to ask the Chief Fire Officer why he allowed the situation to continue after the first incident. It would be nice to hear his comments on it.

We found this Nation report hilarious. The article very clearly points out that any member of the public who has information about what may have started the fire should come forward. Then the article goes on to attribute a statement tto the Chief Fire Officer which is clearly speculative i.e. it could have been an out of control gas fire. Hi Guys, missed me? Now let me get straight to the point, I would like to know what my department doing about the developing mayhem which WILL unfold in North Timberland St. Lucy. This is a disaster just waiting to happen.
We in the fire service NEED to be more proactive than reactive . The fire officers from the two closest stations in conjunction with CERO or (zero) and the ‘SB Testing’ agency should plan evacuation procedures, alternate road access, Possible risk factors and special equipment .
Instead of going to that SAFE program which can be done by the fire prevention unit ONLY. The fire service members at Arch hall and St James stations can do our own training , surveillance and risk factor analysis . This is where the research and planning will function instead of walking around talking pretty and orchestrating more segregation amoung us.
This revolutionary method would also win the hearts and confidence of the public AGAIN.
In my areas of study , this disaster is inevitable because the physical geography of the earth doesn’t repair itself only the biodiversity has the capabilities to do that. So North Timberland Will be destined for a rapid geography transformation ,how tragic and how complicated it gets depends on the emergency services of B’dos

First of all, let me speak of the advantages of the plant . The refinery has a great potential of generating foreign exchange and income for about 100 barbadians AND THATS ALL. Now let us discuss the disadvantages ,
* Barbados is used as a trans- shipment point for the ethanol which is produced in Brazil , the only group that really benefits from this mayhem is the owners of Williams industries [the squeeky clean caucasians] . This elite group cares nothing about the public , only money. I hope that the prime minister wouldn’t let these economic vampires trick him as they have done with the last administration.
*Lets think about the concept ,the USA is buying up all this ethanol to use as a fuel additive or a substitute. So in other words we are helping the USA clean up their environment while the energy fuel used for this refinery is bunker C which is not environmental friendly. The big brained investors couldn’t even think up of using solar energy as an energy source .

I realize a new pattern developing in my department , somebody tell me if I right or wrong. These Kevorkians in khaki are wicked to themselves because they usually take less than 28 days vacation so that the persons acting in there capacity would not be paid for the position. Remember that in order for someone to be paid for acting position it must be for 28 days or over.
Can you all see the big picture here ? These officers dont care about themselves ,how on earth can they care about someone at a lower rank.
I can sit here an list all the examples of poor management skills that these khaki Kevorkians exibited throughout the years but I may finish in time for xmas 2009 . I went headquarters last week to collect kit ,it was a piercing silence of which I never encountered before . The red watch personnel at the station was under a great deal of pressure, the tension was unbearable. The personnel stood there like scared little kittens in a box,the fear factor was so intense that this scenario reminded me of the film ‘Enemy At The Gates’ when the Russian soldiers had to go to the front line with or without weapons , they feared their commanding officers more than the enemy .
The leader of red watch HQ station is a dictator. And that new guy who was recently placed into his watch will some day buckle under the pressure of victimization and he will eventually have that dull dark look of fear in his eyes .

Hello blogers, I am a fire officer who have many issues but Mr . David what you asking these guys to do will fall on death ears because the fire service is well known for accepting shyte and talking among themselves. The first thing these guy need to do is go to the media and let the public know what is really going on. Are you aware that we have temporary officers whose jobs are being threaten by high ranking officers? But There is no proof for my former statement because the public doesn’t know and because our association handle matters behind closed doors….. thou Goats. You would never know.
The department is made up of 97% yardfowls and yes men. The foolishness will continue,the corruption and victimization will continue ,the firemen will continue to plague this blog of rubbish. I know it is easier said than done , I know in our first attempt we may be victimized but a little victimization is good for the heart (lol) . We in this small department are too capitalist minded. I want to speak briefly on some issues.
It appears to me that we spend too much time focusing on Gasbag and the other foolish people. We all know what Gasbag, may nerd and others are like, so don’t let us give them the satisfaction of thinking that they are important, that is why we must talk about them all of the time.
I give credit, where credit is due, and it is good that Gasbag has a masters, if it is true because I do not believe anything that people say until I have seen the documents myself.
Due to him achieving his “Masters in Management” I would have to say that he did not get anything that anybody else can not get. Ask anybody at UWI and they would tell you that management is the easiest course to study there, even an illiterate person like me could pass.
I have also observed that the people in the department who study are mostly studying management, then when they have passed their course, what is the department going to do with them?. Soon from now we are going to have a department full of managers and no workers. This is something to think about.
For those people who wait on the department to give them a course, I feel sorry for you guys because obviously you do not know your rights in Government. It would suit you best instead of writing gossip on this blog to take time out to call Service Commission, Personnel Administration to find out how you can study without being selected by the department or do online courses, like I do sometimes.
How much education you gain should not be up to the fire service. So that is food for thought.
I can not condone the behaviour of talking about Gasbag’s new jacket, if it is true or false that is a matter for the parties involved. What I do hope is that Mrs Gasbag would wake up one day, realise that she can do much better and walk away from the marriage. I will continue to be a friend to her whenever she needs me.
We like to say that the people at the top do not know what is going on in the fire service but I can assure you that they know because I personally spoke to them. You know what they said, we are aware of all the problems within the fire service but tell me, what are they doing about them? I say nothing, it would mean that once they get their job done, they do not care what we are going through or our working conditions.
The final thing that I would say, if the conditions do not suit you in the department, the best thing to do is put yourself in a position to move on to a better job, with better pay and less stress. There are so much people who have gone this route and people who want more out of life will continue to go this route, in the end the Fire Service will be the loser.

I want the members of the B.F.S. to know that no man is an island . we are all adults here i tired of hearing the same fuc—g thing over n over again the service gone to the dogs (sorry to say) but when the head bad the whole body bad. We the workers of the service got to stand up to the plate and do something to let the world know what going on in this place. It get so bad in this place that a sub-officer could embarace the D.C.F.O. on a fire ground and nothing is done about it.
That famous sub-officer should turn up for work and fine all he staff sick out but you know what the ones that frighten for him would turn up.
We are not a united bunch i would advise all the young fire officers to try and learn the work and give the public 150% when you have to go out on calls.

First of all I must explain the difference between capitalism and socialism and you readers may see why we should debate a systematic change and not a personality change.
Capitalism is a type of governance where the profit margin of individuals in the higher echelons of society would be maintained or increased at the EXPENSE of the working class. Education and Health care standards at the working class level is minimal . Hence the upper class cares nothing about the working class as long as the work is done and the profit margin is maintained. The upper class receives the best education and the best health care services while the working class receive suffering ,illiteracy and poverty.
Socialism on the other hand is an extreme, going in the opposite direction to capitalism. Within this type of governance the wealth , health care and education is spread evenly across the population , no one is disadvantaged and left behind .Some times an individual does not make decisions with the country at interest so these important decisions will be made for you.
Now let us get back to the BFS , I think throughout history, the department was ruled under a capitalist style of management where training and chances for promotion are not evenly distributed. The extremely high level of corruption will be maintained because the service is not willing to embrace the socialist style of management. There is also no form of accountability that is why the masses have to suffer due to the recklessness of a few.
Under the socialist management style, training would spread evenly across the masses, corruption would decrease, motivation and empowerment would be at a maximum . Fire officers would not have to go home to their families with a brown tongue from kissing ass . The department would be a force for the future. And another thing , that khaki uniform that the gazetted rank are outfitted needs to be changed immediately. The design and colour of that uniform is a mental stigma and a symbol of slavery . The officers should be wearing their rank markings with the blue uniform to give the department members a sense of togetherness .
The cerimonial black for officer could remain but that khaki colour . I hate it

Now reading Fowl Cock column , the media is the answer to exposing these venomous serpents in the department. Now the public dont know that they are less than nine Self Contained Breathing Apparatus sets to serve the municipal fire fighting section of the department at any given time. This means that in building fires we cannot rescue the public efficiently when they are trapped in a building or we cannot fight fire offensive. We just have to shoot water through windows and doorways but we dare not enter. Yet the administration do not budget for this in the estimates. Mr. David this info cannot be put in a document and posted, but to prove this to you ,you can either come at any fire station during working hours and ask for a tour of the fire trucks. You can send your friends at any of the other fire stations to gather info as well . The SCBAs are in the rear of the vehicles cabin embedded in the lumbar support in the back seat, they look similar to a divers tank, with a mask attached . just count them. The Arch Hall Station truck got 1 , st james truck got 1, st john truck got 2 ,worthing truck got 1 and headquarters station may have 3 if you are lucky.

Sell Out! can you used a scba, the reason that we have few set are that the personnel don’t want to train and then throw the set by the way side and honestly how many firemen have the balls to go in a burning structure with SCBA only a few in doubt even ten men. Before you talk ask why the set are not taken care of when its our duty, all firemen want to do is cook, sleep ,eat, drink rum and wash their cars , how many of us really can be honest with ourselves and say we are not good enough we need proper training, I can say this for myself can the rest of you. My concern is about the health and well being of all the fire officers who put their lives at risk everyday to serve and protect the lives and property of this island. Working in this organisation i have seen what the administration of the BFS beliefs are in respect to this. In the last issue of kit for the year we were given gloves and “ear moffs” in addition to the regular kit that we receive anually but in my opinion the “ear moffs” are just to keep your ears warm. Yes i know it is protective equipment that can be used when we go up by the Airport Fire Stn or if we have tours with heavy machinerybut how often do the majority of us find outselves in those places. Firstly tours of plants and comanies with heavy machinery are at a all time low and only a selected few work up at the AFStn on a regular basis. When i first got those two additions to the kit i was like what are these really for. why is it that they Bragade doesnt issuse us with respirators which would be more logically applicable for most of us who work everyday dealing with grass fires. I dont know if other people realize but the grass fires of today are more toxic than ever before. With the all of illegal dumping going on in barbados with tires,bags and garbage that are thrown deliberately in the pastures and the ignorant bajans does burn every year gone are the days of who can eat more smoke. I have been one of the few officers that have be trained with SCBA and it isnt a problem to put it on but the problem is to have that heavy crap on ur back and tryign to beat out a fire. Personally i bought my own respirtor because i care about my own health and i would recommend all other officers to do the same but it is just to show that if we dont take care of ourselves no one else will and to me the “EAR MOFFS” were just a waste of money even now mine still in the bag next time spend the money on something that would benefit us all.

Having actually sat and listened face to face to the firefighters for years, I can tell you that they do have many problems within the fire house. There is no trust among them, not only for thier peers of similar rank nut also for thier superiors….and this is so throughout the department.
Thier problems will not easily be solved by comventional methods. Proposals have to be made to the powers that be by someone from outside who has the trust and respect of all the fire fighters all across the board, and to whom they complain unwittingly………if you get my drift!

Well i aint doing nothing to give people STDs, you are mistaken. There are some who are doing such but you know what that will never done. So the more we talk about it the more it will be done. Those things will never end. What we and ALL WHO READ AND COMMENT on the blog should do is try to make the service a better place. For those who do not like it, they should ask the minister for a transfer to another department to see if they are sweets over there. Realistically when those at the top go, do any of you think the service will change, OF COURSE NOT. The back bitting, name calling, pimping, cursing, drinking, calling at officers homes, and all the things that occur within the Fire Service will continue actually they will get worse. There is clandestine pimping, stealing of monies, diesel, refrigators and other questionable short falls in managing the B.F.S business. There are numerous financial improprieties that seem not to end.We need an investigation by the ministry of Home Affairs inclusive of the Attorney General with the findings being dealt with expeditiously. No one person at any give time should have been able to remove monitors from a room with limited access without the knowledge of the administration; Who worked in this room? Who has keys? When were they reported missing and who made the report? Tranfers were made to effect change.. Was it to silence persons who may have to talk or was it to hide the criminal minded persons that has the monitors..N.B I will inform the Attorney General about my findings…This crap MUST stop…

Its amazing that every one talks about theifing. How comes a man in charge of a northern station apparently stoled diesel and nothing seemed to have been done about it. He drives to stations and blabs his mouth and yet no one had the gall to get him investigated, yet he still continues to do his famous thing, TALK. One good thing i can say is that diesel runs till Knight catches it. Wait and see who catches the knight.
Even those in charge still allow their friends to work special events. Check the notice, even people on vacation get big picks, but thats the usual. Every body talks about the bag but every one is the same. Wait and see what becomes new in this week to come.

This is fire service week, can you and your friends start protest from tomorow ? We need to let the public know that we have people acting in post from since 2002 and we also have temporary fire officers whose jobs are being threatened by gazetted officers.
These temporary officers were reminded about a year ago that their ink aint dry and they are still under probation by a then Divisional Officer now acting Deputy CFO at a parade rehearsal . This happened in presence of members of the RBPF.

Its a pity that Anonymous on Sept 23 can talk about being threatened by a then D/O but you know what,I hear that there are about ten officers who aint turn at all for none of the rehersals, why have they not been threatened like the 300 last year. The discipline of this service is for those that the administration do not like. But just imagine only two years then and they did not want to attend rehersals, WOW wait till nine years like the ones this year and you will see that none of them will attend rehersals. I hear that Cox talk about discipline at the parade Friday, I hope he start by dealing wid those that blatantly aint turn up. Otherwise he is no different from the others. TAlk, Talk and more Talk.

Its a shame that they work so hard, turn up for parades, partake in other areas of the service, even pon the association and dem poor officers cannot yet be oppointed.
Then you expect them to perform at their best. Its a shame. Mayers was there and did nothing, Blackman was also there and did nothing,Rice aint get time to do nothing. Lets hope for their sake Cox get it done and get it done so that for christmas they would be able to have a jolly good christmas.
