That’s some massive crowd at the BLP meeting tonight!

  • Georgie Porgie // January 5, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Maybe so, but I have been following both, and there seems to be more substance in Passage Rd!

  • Hard Driver // January 5, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Lots of red shirts at Carlisle carpark. So where are the undecided? Passage Road?

  • YUM YUM I like it! // January 5, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Why is David Thompson strangling that old lady?

  • Lodge Road // January 5, 2008 at 11:28 pm

There is lots of RED shirts at Carlisle Carpark, and lots of YELLOW shirts at Passage Road so all the undecided is at home. where we are able to watch them both at the same time via the internet Hard Driver you fool.

I am looking for someone who attended both meetings to compare size of crowds. The police are a good source for crowd estimation. Who pulled bigger audience on manifesto night Bees or Dems?

BLP appears to be running scared from televison debates. Owen gave impression he could not wait to eat Thompson raw in debates instead we have the spectacle of his AG not turning up for debate while Lashley of DLP turned up. Shame on Owen and BLP. Thats another charge Dems should use against Owen in their daily must read charge sheet.

Thompson would catspraddle Owen in any debate. No other leader has been attacked by as many people as Thompson and he has withstood them all and has been devastating in his comebacks. Thompson over Owing any day in debating.

  • Georgie Porgie // January 6, 2008 at 12:05 am

But there seems to be content coming from the DLP tonight. No name calling tonight.

Whereas all I am hearing from the BLP is cheerleading of Arthur. Its like when I go to church in the morning; the men will rise to extol the virtues of the GOD-MAN, rather than that of a mere man !

  • Ayub // January 6, 2008 at 12:08 am

Wunna worry bout crowds…come Jan 15th a lot wunna BLP yardfowls gine be crying rivers of tears………..trust me

  • David // January 6, 2008 at 12:22 am

The PM backraising Thompson. Middle class Barbados will get their taxes significantly reduced. Pensioners get increase and taxes on pensions waived targeted at BARP. Several other benefits which the Pm rattled off but too tired to record now. It will be who can buy the most votes it looks like.

PM accuses the DLP of accepting money from Taiwan to fund campaign brokered by Hartley Henry and Charles Lee.
He further accuses Thompson of being caught in night clubs and playing one arm bandits and alot more.
Looks like the Arthur has removed the gloves.

  • Lodge Road // January 6, 2008 at 12:42 am

David Seale, Anthony Wood cousin is bank rolling the BLP campaign and also doing what he can for Anthony Wood, so what is the deal if Leroy Parris is bank rolling David Thompson?

So what Thompson parties and plays slots.. Owen is drunkard and a foul mouthed bully.

At least he ain causing anyone else harm!!!

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 1:21 am

the dems say that they “will increase the tax free exemption threshold for pensioners receiving $3,000 per month or less.” Do they not realise that the personal allowance for persons aged 60 and over in receipt of a pension is already $40,000 per year, which is well over $3,000 per month,

  • Undertaker // January 6, 2008 at 1:30 am

Basically, what I gathered to be honest is that as long as Owen is the head the David would NEVER win and election, lets be real I believe that the DLP will win a lot more seats about 6/7 or eight more, but David is just a great no. 2 when he is compared to Owen, Owen is what you would call a Big Night Performer. I like members from both sides and they are some one both sides that I would not like to get back in and some on the BLP side that I would not like to get back in (like Noel Lynch) Both leaders and both sides have skeletons and THINGS to hide, and corruptness.

  • Undertaker // January 6, 2008 at 1:41 am

Irene Sandiford-Garner, I like her I think that she has that “old time” political feel about her, think that she debates well and is overall a great upcoming politican, I wish her well, not sure she can beat george though (being honest, he has done a lot of canvassing lately) he has some loyal supporters, lots of those people got jobs and houses etc, when he had ministries and people will not forget that easily, but she does stand a change though, I am not to sure of Clyde Mascoll regaining that seat though, town people and people near town, don’t forgive betrayal that easily, when Hammie crossed everyone knew why, but with Mascoll it was a lot different, although I think that most people would have done the same thing. I think with him the timing was off, maybe if he had gone independent for a while and then joined a few months later that would have changed things, I don’t think that Sinkler is so hot, but against Mascoll he looks good right now, but 10 days is a long time in politics.

The BLP made a VERY powerful presentation last night and pulled a VERY HUGE crowd.

The DLP manifesto failed to appear at the DLP manifesto launch. They now say wait until Wednesday.

  • Wishing in Vain // January 6, 2008 at 1:56 am

Thankfully BU has dealt with a nonsense comment using my name.
Getting back to these meetings the DEMS had a massive well attended crowd of about 10,000 to 12,000 persons and delivered a well designed program of change for this island.

The political misfit Owing must first address the nation on why he feels so motivated not to ever want to see the DLP hold office again and why he continues to destroy mottley as he has openly done recently, and what triggered the brawl among the animals of the blp that saw mottlet throwing chairs at Owing and Wood having to tell Owing that he wood was a better Economist than the idiot ASSCOLL and he and Owing fought likes cats and dogs, wonderful examples to be setting for our children to follow.

  • Sad Sheila // January 6, 2008 at 2:03 am

How do they plan to run the country if they can’t even get their website up and running properly! This has me very concerned.

  • Yardbroom // January 6, 2008 at 3:22 am

I have always thought, that the DLP had a leader in David Thompson and the candidates, to make a difference to Barbados in the coming election. That they have released a manifesto which underpins that belief, warms me, but more importantly, gives hope, that the dreams longed for by the majority of Barbadians seem imminent.

Almost a week before Dr. Martin Luther King’s day in America – 21st January – the Barbados electorate will go to the polls, perhaps it is timely to mention at this moment, when there is hope for the future, what the great man said:

“…”let us not walow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow. I still have a dream”

It is with hope, and with that dream we can see a light for a better tomorrow.

It would be remiss of me, if I did not mention, how impressed I have been, with the courage, attitude and incisive mental dexterity of Irene Sandiford – Garner the DLP candidate for St. Andrew. This young lady has presented herself to our brothers and sisters in St. Andrew, and I sincerely hope she is given the opportunity to represent them. It would be a pinnacle of justice, for a young lady of great courage and ability.

Interesting ‘post-it’ note on the front of the Sunday Sun today, stating ‘The BLP Thanks Barbados for packing Carlisle Car Park for the presentation of our candidates last night’.

What time did the meeting start and what time were the post-it notes and newspaper printed?

    Just asking!

  • Wishing in Vain // January 6, 2008 at 7:47 am

The sticky advert on the front page of the
Nation today was a statement of hope and wishes, because based on recent history the blp meetings have been lack lustre and very lacking on substance, as we saw on Saturday night while ALL THE DLP MEETING were overflowing with people the blp meeting in Beckles road was very poorly attended by about 40 persons and Owing SEE THRU ARTHUR never even worried to attend and to speak at that meeting in defence of Noeless Blarney Lynch, what does that say to us the voters? It says if Owing has no use for him why should we have any use for this clown.
I assume that the NEGLECT comes about as a result of the brawl mottley and Owing had at Party Headquarters and the fact that Lynch has pledged his support to mottley rather than Owing !!!!

  • Wishing in Vain // January 6, 2008 at 7:57 am

Adrian I posted having not seen your commentsbut I support your observation 100 %.
These wicked corrupt bastards would have had this sticker sent out even if they only had 5 people to listen to them, this is an example of the lengths that this group of dishonest bastards will go to in an effort to make themselves look good in the eyes of the masses but funny enough the masses have opened their eyes and are no longer bought with CORNED BEEF AND BISCUITS POLITICS and the flash and the fireworks and smokescreens they have their brains and eyes well wide open.

TO A NEW BEGINNING ON THE 15 th JANUARY 2008

  • Floyd // January 6, 2008 at 8:00 am

I am going to be selfish here but the increase in the mortgage interest deduction from 10,000 to 20,000 could win my vote.

The energy proposals in terms of solar electricity also seem quite interesting.

The review of the defamation laws and the freedom and information act are also interesting.

Interesting manifesto with a strong focus on governance issues.

I also like the part on capital controls as well as the commitment to review the proliferation of government owned companies.

  • Trained Economist // January 6, 2008 at 8:39 am

I am particularly pleased with three aspects of the DLP manifesto:

    1. The incentives for solar energy in generating electricity for homes and businesses. Modern solar electric systems typically operate in a context where the consumer remains connected to the national power grid (Barbados light and power in our case) and is able to sell excess energy to the power company. In our case, most homes will likely be selling electricity to light and power in the day and buying from them in the night. In such a case the home should earn more from the electricity it sells than the electricity it buys each month.

However, the big challenge is to get persons to break down and pay the relatively heavy upfront cost of solar panels for the house. The incentives proposed in the DLP manifesto will reduce this upfront cost by providing low interest loans and a tax rebate. I applaud this initiative. If this takes off we can save a lot on the oil import bill and also help the environment.

    2. I also support the stance on capital account liberalization. Given Barbados’ commitment to a fixed exchange rate I believe caution on capital account liberalization is warranted.

    3. I am also pleased with the statement that a DLP government will seek financing primarily from the capital markets rather than rely on the NIS scheme. I would have like an even stronger commitment which said that there would be no borrowing from the central bank.

As a BLP supporter for UMPTEEN years…….last night in Carlisle park I felt
SHAME to hear Owen Arthur talk about CHINA !

As my party leader & PM……Owen Arthur has not answered me NOR thousands of BARBADIANS about the presence of so many CHINESE in Barbados working without WORK PERMITS !

So how can he link the DEMS to TAIWAN….where is the evidence my…PM ?

The volunteers at Noel Lynch’s offici gave him a bomb shell the other night.as soon as they were finished there, they all put on their DLP yellows with the ‘I wid Dem’ logos and went to a DLP meeting…….he sat in his car with his head down between his legs like a wounded puppy….guess he knows what to expect soon.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 8:56 am

Floyd, at this late hour you want me to believe that you have not decided how you are going to vote? Ah doubt ya!! You had years of crap/chocolate from a BLP government and you ain’t decide yet? Ah doubt ya!! I am putting it to you that you are not undecided at this late hour. You are either not going to vote or you are going to vote BLP. We all get to live here after January 16th whether we vote or not, whether the DLP or the BLP is elected. You know what else Floyd, we also get to live with our consciences for all of our lives, they do not go on vacation unless we are hypocrites.
If you are happy with the BLP well go with them, you still get to live here and complain like anybody else. If you cannot see that 13 years is a bit long for anybody to remain focussed you are blind. I ain’t got anything against you since you might very well be my next door neighbour but you ain’t fooling me that you are an undecided voter.
Political meetings may be a gauge of what the country is feeling but lots of people refuse to break up their sleep to listen to for the most part a lot of crap. I was a decided voter years ago just waiting until the date was fixed. Ah tired!!

Where were the crowds when Geoge Payne was in St.Lucy on Friday night..I only saw about 20 persons listening to him…

  • Floyd // January 6, 2008 at 9:31 am

But I am saying what I like about the DLP manifesto. I do not understand your comments.

  • Softman // January 6, 2008 at 9:38 am

I am rapidly losing faith in the credibility of the Arthur administration.

I had actually been taken Arthur seriously when he said that the DLP promises might bankrupt the treasury and ruin the economy. Some of his latest policy proposals appear at least as expensive as the DEMs’ proposals. I am sensing the abandonment of any fiscal responsibility in the quest for power.

The BLP seems to be trying to backraise the DEMS. Surely after being in power for three terms you should be running on your record and not trying to backraise the other side.

I cannot take these BLP promises of tax cuts for example as anything more than electioneering. Elections were not constitutionally due for several more months. The Arthur administration had an opportunity to present another budget and implement any such proposals. They seem like wild promises in an election.

  • Softman // January 6, 2008 at 9:41 am

The Arthur administration had three terms to implement legislation about the disclosure of campaign funding. I have no time now with Owen’s nonsense about Taiwanese finding the Dems’ campaign. Owen and clearly are clearly awash with money, where is theirs coming from.

Owen Arthur is facing an increasingly uphill battle to get my support at this point. Under serious electoral pressure for the first time, he looks a less than steady hand on the ship.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 9:47 am

The BLP are only getting large crowds at the big events. The DLP are pulling more people ..evidenced by St. Geoge, Carrington Village, Western compared to the few at BLP meetings

    “could”= indecision=undecided=??????

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 10:17 am

I really do not mean to quarrel with you Floyd but this election is really going to be “a paradigm shift.” I can feel it in my bones, I can hear it in the words spoken and I can’t sit this one out or make the wrong choice. I feel as though I am fighting for my country’s future. I may be feeling wrong after all I am only human but tell the truth I am afraid of 5 more years under BLP governance. So for you to be saying could all like now ain’t funny to me.

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 10:34 am

The followers of the dems have short term memories when it comes to the promise to increase the mortgage interest deduction to $20,000. In 1992 the dems removed the mortgage interest deduction completely. Do you really believe they will now come and double it. The dems who praise this intiative need to thank the blp for bringing back the deduction and also for increasing the personal allowance to $25,000

  • Softman // January 6, 2008 at 10:37 am

As far as I am aware the deduction is 10000.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 11:04 am

I can sense change is in the air..everywhere I go I hear people saying we got to get rid of them

  • David // January 6, 2008 at 11:05 am

The strategy by Arthur to back raise Thompson has worked in the past. It was calculated given that he knew at the time the DLP would have released their manifesto in Passage Road. The feeling of a need to change the incumbent is very strong. It seems that Thompson needs to assure a distrustful public that he has a competent team and the outcome of the next election is his to win. The doubt about Thompson’s leadership has reduced somewhat but has he climb the hump.

  • Softman // January 6, 2008 at 11:11 am

While the BLP policies outlined so far appear to simply be vote catchers the DLP has gone for some solid ideas which are not typical vote catchers.

The governance stuff is not really vote catching.

I agree with “trained economist” the policies for solar power seem quite good.

what will the voters go for?

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 11:23 am

I cannot understand this thing about David’s ability to lead. David has more experience than Owen when he became PM.

  • David // January 6, 2008 at 11:31 am

I cannot understand this thing about David’s ability to lead. David has more experience than Owen when he became PM.

Anonymous~it is all about perception. Thompson has had a rocky past maintaining credibility with the public based on a number of issues which are well documented. Only last night the IMF 1994 issue was referred to by Arthur. The public will have to decide if this is a different time.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 11:36 am

At the same time how does the public feel about Owen when he calls and curses people who differ with his point of view;calls people ‘indentured servants’; who gets drunk in public ( check U Tube for his presentation at Mascoll’s nomination); is responsible for Barbados at the lowest level in the Human Development Index ( 34 under Arthur and 20 under Sandiford);……

The only way we can change that perception is to stop saying that David is not ready.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 11:38 am

    Arthur is no genius.

On the subject of Economists as far as we are aware Anthony Wood and Reginald Farley are trained Economists as well.

  • Softman // January 6, 2008 at 11:44 am

Arthur have fooled us and many especially BLP supporter have allowed Arthur to fool them even though we now have a lower standing in the Human Development Index and the ability to repay loans.

He has helped the rich and have neglected the poor. Three of them ( Mia, Lynette and Clyde) tried to fool us before Christmas by promising a reduction in the prices of food items. They should now come back and apologise to the public instead of Arthur saying complaining that the retailers do not pass on the savings to the consumers.

BU. How can you ask readers to rate the manifestos of both parties when the blp has not released theirs. The blp document you refer to in your poll on the manifesto is the report on promises made by the blp and how they performed

To the Arthur Administration, the average Bajan is a second class citizen.

Foreign investors come here and want to determine whether we can access the beach by passing beside their respective buildings. The come here and joint to Government by treating us like Dogs..and perhaps this is why in recent years we have had and increase in the number of white persons who have been charged for making negative racial remarks..

    ————————-
I’ve heard this argument frequently but, the DLP needs 10 seat in order to take government. Regardless of the David/Owen debate, it comes down to constituencies. So outside of the sure DLP 6, let’s look at the red shirts who will not be going to Parliament.

    Noel Lynch
    Joe Edghill
    Reginald Farley
    Jerome Walcott
    Dale Marshall
    Jeffrey Bostic
    Ian Gill
    Rudy Grant
    Clyde Mascoll

That’s 9 who are 90% gone already. And I aint even start to talk about the shakiness of Wood, Payne, Symmonds, Eastmond, Hammie La, Prescod, Marshall and Atherley. I’ll be honest, prior to November 30 I wasn’t confident of a DLP victory. Now I’m sure of it, and glad for it. Even the BLP’s advertising isn’t resonating with John Public anymore. Owen, owen, owen, owen, like a stick record.

There can be no defence of the blp as they have had 15 years to set out and put into action programs and if after 15 years in office with little progress in health, social issues, tourism why then are we even raising its head at this time.

    Donald Duck

You caught a sneak preview of our next poll which we inadvertently made public.

  • Floyd // January 6, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Many people speak of the environment and high oil prices. Yet I cannot get any discussion going on the DLP’s manifesto pledges on energy.

I am not endorsing anybody, but their proposals on solar electricity are the most serious policies I have seen in terms of reducing the oil import oil and encouraging the use of renewable energy.

The DLP is proposing a Smart Energy Fund to provide low interest loans for persons buying solar panels to generate electricity.

They are offering a tax rebate on the cost of acquiring and installing the solar electric systems.

They are promising to outfit all new government facilities with solar electric systems.

This is a truly bold policy.

    Floyd

We hope that if the DLP forms the next government that such a project will enjoy a transparent tendering process. A project such as this will make some people very rich.

    David

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 12:44 pm

The BLP continues to refer to the layoffs of the early 90s. Those were hard times but this situation occured all over the world with similar consequences.

In the 1990’s the IMF had been party to a series of spectacular crashes that have devastated the economies of a number of countries.

What occured in Barbados was not isolated from this situation.

  • Dr. Justin Robinson // January 6, 2008 at 12:48 pm

The Democratic Labor Party’s policy proposals certainly seem well crafted to encourage greater use of solar power in generating electricity.

    I certainly applaud those initiatives.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Well I am supporting you this time Floyd and not quarelling with you. I for one would put solar panels on my house if I qualified. Since I already have a solar heater. Anything for the good of this my beloved country. Some of us have no choice but to live on the little rock and some of us won’t have it any other way. It is called love.

  • David // January 6, 2008 at 1:49 pm

We commend the proposal on the solar initiative. this is important because the incumbent seems reliant on the Barbados Light & Power Co Ltdto arrive at a solution to finding alternate energy supplies. Will never happen.

There are so many different anonymouses/or is that anonymice or anonymi (just being corny) that I am really going to have to take a name. LOL

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 4:15 pm

We all have one thing in common. We are afraid of Owen calling us in the middle of the night ( usually that is not never good news) and causing cardiac arrest.

WE ARE TERRIFIED OF THIS DICTATOR!

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Actually ‘anonymous’ is an adjective; anonymity is the noun…so the plural must be ‘anonymities’
..but one is free to create new words so anonymice could become henceforth the plural or anonymous.

Let’s break some records like we will iin the upcoming elections…success to David and the DLP

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 4:51 pm

My twin you like you like bare sport. I like anonymice though. But I am not about to destroy the people’s language since that would not be helpful to anyone. When I first came on the blogs I thought anonymous was a moniker for somebody in particular then to discover that we all can be anonymice/mouses lol.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 4:52 pm

So you supporting the solar initiative my twin?

  • Floyd // January 6, 2008 at 5:23 pm

One of the things I like about the solar policy (item no.20 in the online version of the manifesto) is that while it is potentially beneficial and revolutionary it is not an obvious vote winner.

I am more fearful of the bag of goodies type policies both sides seem to be wooing us with.

The DLP has clearly gotten some good advice or put some serious thought into the solar energy initiative. Germany has become a world leader in this area. My reading on the internet suggests we have three advantages in this area:

    1. we have sun all year round, so we have more supply of solar energy.
    2. we do not need to heat homes and buildings during winter months. hence, less demand for energy.
    3. we do not use nearly as much air conditioning in summer, again less demand for energy.

  • Trained Economist // January 6, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Floyd, it sure is nice to see the level of debate rise to this level.

BU seems to have the most sophisticated analysis on policy matters these days.

At a recent conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB), James Husbands made the point of a billion dollar potential in solar.

Responding to a question from Dr. Robinson (who posts here sometimes) he pointed out that solar electricity has taken off in Guyana as a result of necessity. because of the unreliability of supply from the national power company and the fact that a number of homes are built in somewhat remote areas people have gone for solar electric systems, and a number of companies are now in the business in Guyana.

These proposals by the DLP may make some people rich, but if well implemented could save us a ton of foreign exchange currently spent on oil imports.

Of course there are a number of powerful vested interests who have always frustrated attempts at renewable energy. So lets see if there is courage to forge ahead.

Remember, not everyone hurts from $100 barrel oil.

While we are discussing serious issues on BU, both of the newspapers are caught up in the pomp, pageantry and innuendo of the election. Thanks for BU.

  • Trained Economist // January 6, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Questions have quite rightly been raised about the cost of some of the DLP promises, especially as they seem to plan to remove or reduce VAT on a number of items.

The BLP now seems to be following suit wiht the PM suggesting that all persons earning up to $80,000 will be taxed at 20%. I would expect that persons earning up to $80,000 are a rather large chunk of the personal income tax net. Effectively halving the amount of tax they pay must constitute a large hit on tax revenues. How is this money going to be made up?

The economy has done well under the BLP but fiscal prudence has not been a hallmark of the Owen Arthur administration. The Arthur administration has never been able to really contain government spending. Such a large cut in revenue without it being made up elsewhere could have serious consequences for the fiscal deficit.

The election seems a tight one, fiscal prudence may be sacrificed on the altar of winning. I am hoping good sense prevails.

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 6:37 pm

the dlp is devoid of ideas. There is nothing on the international business sector which has contributed almost 2/3 of our revenue from corporation tax in 2007

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Another fact. The word telecommunications is not even mentioned in the dlp manifesto. Does this mean they will allow C&W to continue with the service they currently provide to us when their licence expires

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 6:45 pm

another fact. All the issues highlighted by the dlp on the subject of development of the capital makret are already being dealt with

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 6:48 pm

The DLP seems full of good ideas to me.
Donald duck is showing quite limited powers of analysis. You do not have to mention a sector by name to be catering to it.

If you look at the DLP proposals on capital account liberalization many of them are explicitly targeted at the international business sector. Check section 13 of the manifesto, read the policies on capital account liberalization and come again.

removing exchange controls on non-residents caters to the international business sector.

allowing non-residents to hold foreign currency accounts caters to the international business sector.

persons working on work permits will be exempt from exchange controls. that helps the international business sector.

    Go and come again donald.

The solar proposals are among the most important I have seen in years.

There is a set of very good ideas on the capital markets as well. Those policies are excellent.

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 6:49 pm

The dlp proposes to “Increase the tax-free exemption threshold for pensioners
receiving $3,000.00 per month or less.”

They don’t say what they are going to increase it to. Are they not aware that the personal allowance for persons aged 60 and over and in receipt of a pension is now $40,000. Therefore such persons who are in receipt of only a pension of $3,000 will already not have to pay tax.

  • Anonymous // January 6, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I cannot criticize the DEMS on lack of idea, I am more concerned about the obvious vote gaining give aways.

    Be fair donald duck.

  • Buppie // January 6, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Donald duck is showing his slip.

The dems have some good ideas in their manifesto. the question is if they will stick to them and not abandon the manifesto like in 1986.

I hope somebody runs with the proposals on solar electricity though. That high oil price killing we and if is one thing we have nuff of is sun. How can we let a place like germany, which cold as hell be a leader in solar energy.

Donald Duck, you seem very well informed, so I believe you. Was that one of the bills that was passed when the Dems were boycotting Parliament? I see that the changes to the credit union and RRSP deduction are included on the 2007 tax return. Were these enacted at the same time?

  • Georgie Porgie // January 6, 2008 at 9:14 pm

    BLP Meeting in Sargeants Village

Joe Edghill spoke of potency of drugs delivered by the Drug service in such a way that it is clear that he is not cognizant of the fact that potency per se is rarely of clinical significance, because few drugs are of such low potency that the sheer physical bulk of the administered drug presents a problem.

For example, heroin is approximately three times as potent as morphine. This has at various times been misinterpreted to the general public as meaning that heroin is three times as effective as morphine in the relief of pain and that pain-sufferers are being denied a dramatically more effective analgesic because of the unapproved status of heroin in the United States. In fact, heroin and morphine are of approximately equal efficacy.

Aparently he was confusing efficacy with potency, as confusion often arises when a person attaches to potency the common English definition of potent as “the capability of causing strong physiological or chemical effects, as medicines or alcoholic beverages.”

Edghill apparently does not know that the potency of a drug depends on its absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. For example, a drug that is poorly absorbed following oral administration will be far less potent than one that is readily absorbed, even if the two drugs have equal efficacies (affinities for a common receptor).

  • Brutus // January 6, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Donald Duck, the 2007 tax return is on the Inland Revenue website (http://www.barbados.gov.bb/ird/pages/forms.htm).

The DLP say that they will Relax Capital controls on the ability of local financial institutions to acquire foreign investments will be relaxed from 25% to 50% over a five-year period. This will allow these institutions to diversify their total portfolio investments as well as improve their capacity to offer wealth management services to non-residents.

Currently there are no exchange control restrictions on international banks offering wealth management services to on-residents.

Furthermore what does their 50% refer to???

  • donald duck // January 6, 2008 at 11:26 pm

The dlp says that it will make it compulsory that all land for sale in major developments be advertised with prices on the local market prior to promotion and sale on the international market to non-Barbadians. Proof of advertising must be supplied when applying for transfer to non-Barbadian interests.

How do they propose this to operate? No developer who targets the non-resident market will want to do this and this will result in a reduction in investment. Is this policy realistic?

  • floyd // January 7, 2008 at 10:46 am

i think the 50% relaxation refers to localmutual funds. mutual funds in bim are currently limited to 25% of their portfolio overseas.

The reality is that each and everyone of them is now situated in no mans land, when the clown ASSCOLL is forbidden from entering the houses of BLP supporters in his area what does that say about this election?

When the guys of Haynesville have turned their backs on Liz Thompson and have thrown their support behind Donville Inniss What does that say about this election?

I put it to you that each and every one of them are skating on thin ice and do not know what to expect out of this election.

It is made all the worst for them because of the inclusion of ASSCOLL as Co Leader vote grabbing status, and the all out war that this event has brought to the blp campaign, when mottley, wood, billie and arthur can become embroiled in a all out fist fight with chairs being thrown around at one another it says that this is now the party to be allowed to rule this country.

Along with this event goes the action of Arthur refusing to speak at Lynch area meeting on Friday night, nor do I expect to see him speak in support of Rommel Marshall either after all these two have vested their support squarely behind mottley for the post of the PM and with it brings the hardships as we are seeing with the infighting and the wars.

If we add to this pot the fact that the clown Hammy Lashley went to his nomination in a YELLOW Tee shirt symbolic of support for the DEMS and has been telling people in his area that he is not campaigning and that Arthur is a wicked evil man that does not deserve what he has gotten, and that he wants the people of the Pine to vote for his opponent speaks volumes for the disunity within this blp administration.

Do these PEP lunatics think that anybody in Barbados will take them seriously?

Viagra is neither a political issue nor a national one.

    ~B~F~P~E~

PEP candidate takes hard line on Viagra
    Published on: 1/4/08.

MEN MAY SWEAR by it, but People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) candidate Rosita Broome wants the sexual performance-enhancing drug Viagra out of Barbados.

“Why hasn’t a product like Viagra been recalled from the shelves, seeing that it has such acute side effects, for example loss of sight, heart problems?” she asked.

In Barbados, Viagra is a prescription drug, not sold over the counter. Its manufacturer, Pfizer, has refuted allegations of serious vision side-effects, including blindness.

Broome raised the issue when the PEP launched its general election campaign last Sunday in Bush Hall, St Michael.

She said that with the list of recalled drugs growing, Barbados needed to pay closer attention to its pharmaceutical imports.

She said, it should set up a special facility to test new drugs as well as imported foodstuff.

The candidate for St Michael West suggested that even though these items had to get United States Food and Drug Administration approval for sale, Barbadians needed to be cautious about putting them on the market and buying them.

“We in the PEP suggest that a testing facility should be set up to analyse and test the food and drugs that come into our country.” (TY)

When the Hoyos family can write an article critical of the BLP as this one is, the WIND OF CHANGE IS CERTAINLY BLOWING A GALE THRU THIS ISLAND.

    The leadership question
By Pat Hoyos Published: January 6, 2008

Anytime you talk politics in Barbados, the question immediately turns to the issue of leadership. And it is almost always about David Thompson, as in: But can he really lead the country?

This question always shows up in the polls. While both major parties are running neck-and-neck, they say, Owen Arthur’s image as a leader outstrips Thompson’s by two-to-one, if I remember correctly.

This is of course being used as a put-down for the current Opposition leader, and the Bees have made the issue the centre piece of their campaign, believing that the more they remind voters of Arthur’s supposedly commanding margin in the leadership category that people will flock to the Bees once more.

Somehow the thousands who assembled at Oistins to meet the DLP candidates didn’t get the message.

You see, I look at it a different way, and because I fall asleep trying to analyse political polls, of course my analysis will be faulty. But I figure that if the Dems can be running an even race with the Bees despite the perception that they have a weak leader, can you imagine how they would perform if they were perceived to have a strong one?

All of which informs my feeble mind that putting the leadership question at the top of the agenda may not working for the Bees. Thompson seems, moreover, to have learned how to respond to it effectively: By remaining low key and not appearing defensive about the “poor leadership” accusations, he is allowing a sort of “underdog” image to work to his advantage.

Instead, he is promoting his team, which belies the rule-by-division image of Thompson which the Bees are spending a lot of money on in their campaign (e.g. the full page ad quoting Freundel Stuart in last Thursday’s Nation).
And instead of showing a large group of candidates in their ads, the Dems are showing collections of four (for education, agriculture and so on) to emphasise what it sees as the depth of professional experience and knowledge in specific areas among its candidates.

This also seems effective to me, as it quietly counteracts the “leadership-by-division” image which the Bees are trying to imprint on the Dems. I hope it works because our democracy is not, to my mind, being served by any campaign which says essentially that there is really no contest because of such poor leadership on the other side. Then why have an election, I wonder? Let’s just declare a one-party state right away and be done with it.

I’ve said it before, and don’t mind saying it again, that the Dems have as talented and well-versed a collection of candidates as do the Bees, in terms of education, experience, willingness to serve, dedication to people and so forth. The Dems and Bees are two parties whose candidates are so well matched, and which differ so little in overall philosophy that they are interchangeable. Why, even their former leader can fly from his roost to a safe berth at the top of the other party.

And just for the record, let me say I also believe that David Thompson is capable of running the country as prime minister.

If the leadership question is fairly put on the table, however, it should also be asked: How good a leader has Owen Arthur been? Because some poll says it’s two-to-one over Thompson means nothing to me, as I am here talking about my own perception, whether you agree with me or not (it’s a little thing called freedom of expression, and more people should try it.)

Owen Arthur is not the leader he started out as being when he first came to office. He is missing in action far too often. A couple of years ago, the letters M.I.A. would certainly have been apt for this condition, but now they seem to have changed to C.L.Y.D.E.

Arthur seems to rule by fiat, and has done too many policy reverses without explaining his reasoning to the country for me to be comfortable with calling him a great leader. His arrogance in office now seems to permeate almost everything he does, and his decisions seem to make overall sense only when judged by one criteria, which is, what’s good for big business is good for the country.

How else do you account for the demise in service at the QEH, where people are literally dying to be seen, compared to the rise of private emergency rooms? Or how about the quicksand of Edutech, where millions have been spent with little to show for it?

What about the enormous cost overruns on so many projects, from the prison to the highways? We have also seen the government’s unyeilding, hard-headed approach to those insanely stupid flyovers, and its willingness to give unknown and untested companies massive BOLT projects which will tie up our infrastructure in so many contractual knots that we will be paying through our teeth for them long after Arthur has retired? And with no discussion, no give-and-take in debate, no explanations, I can only conclude that we live by arbitrary Arthurian decree. Is that good leadership?

The Arthur government has allowed the bogey man of globalisation to scare citizens into tolerating a concentration of corporate ownership unlike any we have witnessed before on this island, and the main question I have for Thompson is: Will you let it continue, just changing the names of the players? If you win the government and do so, your administration will be no better for Barbados over the long term than the present one.

So far, Thompson has said the opposite. His party is stressing the detoxification of the body politic from the infusion of the many corporate carcinogens it has ingested of late. Will the Dems really take us into public rehab? Will there come a day in Barbados once more when the government accepts that there are things which it must take responsibility for doing because to privatise all the way upstream results in selling us all down the river?

Where do you draw the line? Is it at the hospital bed and the school gate only, or is it in the many other services now provided, sometimes poorly, by the state? Can you manage a hybrid process under which private enterprise plays a role in an overall sector controlled by the state, not only through strong regulatory agencies, but by retaining ownership of key players, like water and transport and roads and prisons?

And what future will Bajans have in their own country if buying a house and a piece of land to put it on are priced outside their means, and if every young couple must get into hock up to their teeth for 30 years in order to buy anything out there?

Yes, the two sides in my view are equal in the quality of their human resources and the opposition has equal potential to the incumbent party’s experience, but how we move forward in the next few years requires, in my view, clear action on those types of issues. And a lot of the answers will call for more consumer discipline and responsibility, because you can’t sustain lower prices if you continue to create more demand than there is supply.

In my view, the leader who can answer these tough questions and show a middle way through the competing interests of average citizens and private corporate interests is the one who will deserve to be the prime minister.

You should read the minister of finance’s presentation of march 14 this year and the section where he spoke about the tax regime for the importation of green products. I have noted the relevant section below

“The Government proposes to introduce, after further consultation, a new tax regime for the importation of “green products”, concentrating on those products that assist with the crosscutting issues earlier dentified –
energy and water conservation and waste minimisation. Green Products could include solar air conditioners, solar pumps and solar lights, household compost units, water-saving and storage devices.”

  • donald duck // January 7, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Further quotes from the minister of finance on march 14th 2007

“Green Homes: The Ministry of Energy and Environment will establish a Green House checklist that is appropriate to small
tropical islands like Barbados. This will include a number of greening, recycling and energy conservation features, e.g. low flow
toilets, water storage, solar water heating, fluorescent lighting, passive ventilation and cooling, alternative energy use. Green
House certification will be provided by the Town Planning Department as part of the development application process. The
householder will be allowed to deduct BDS$5,000 for Income Tax for the expenses incurred in greening his or her home.

    2. Composting: Many house holders use fertilizer on their plants that
can affect the ground water. In addition their organic garden and
yard waste is left in bags for the SSA to collect. The high cost of
managing our organic waste mitigates our effort to keep our solid
waste from spreading to sites that can be used for other project. We
therefore propose to review and after consultation to reduce the
import duties on household compost units.

    3. Recycling: One of the greatest incentives to recycling of plastics has been the deposits on the plastic bottles. This has created central
collection points and made it easier for the local recycling companies to collect this waste. Based on this success, we will request the Ministry of Energy and Environment to work together with the Ministry of Health to identify a broader list of products on
which will be placed a small deposit fee to enhance their ability to be recycled.”

In fact over the weekend I was very dissapointed with the DLP.

I sat at my computer in Orlando FL last night and listened to the entire BLP meeting in Sargeants Village Christ Church live and in full living color. They came through as clear as the school bell.

I could not follow the DLP meeting last night at all!

The same thing Saturday night. Wheras I could follow the BLP meeting clearly, I had to be satisfied with only an audio feed for the DLP. I now listening to David but cant see him or the persons present.

He said that there are certain aspects of the site that are not ready and you suggest that the site is not functioning that is where the difference lies, at least he did not attempt to lie as you so clearly attempted to do and once again to spread mistruths.

I am led to believe that there was no happier a person than your leader when he realised that the opposition was not present for the last sitting of the house (Thank God that the Opposition stayed away as they were the ones that called the election) after all when he was having his sabbatical and having said nothing for 8 MONTH he suddenly found his mouth with Mr. David Thompson’s absence he finally opened his mouth and said something , he had to wait for Mr David Thompson to be away to speak again, what does that say about your leader, let me tell you it says that he is a LIAR, A CHEAT, A FRAUD, CORRUPT, A THIEF, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY A COWARD.

WE DO NOT NEED THIS RUNT OF A MAN TO FEEL THAT HE CAN BE A DICTATOR TO US THE HONEST PEOPLE OF THIS NATION.

The DLP should win this election on their solar energy proposal alone. We have had a number of excellent forward thinking programs over the years.

For example free education, free health, free school meals etc, it’s my view that serious solar energy development is long over due.

As to Mr. Payne giving the people of St. Andrew jobs and houses, the people of St. Andrew also gave him a Job.

They have been grateful Mr. Payne on the other hand has been ungrateful and disrespectful in the way he has disregarded the plight of the working class people of St. Andrew.

It is time to give Irene Sandiford-Garner her chance. I don’t understand how anyone could say he has a chance of winning back his seat.

The people of St Andrew have to vote out that clown on January 15th

    NCPADD keeping eye on campaign
    Published on: 1/7/08.

THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Dependency (NCPADD) will be closely monitoring the issues on the political platforms.

President, Pastor Victor Roach, said the organisation wanted to see which party was making breathalyser testing and a drug treatment court a priority, among other things.

“We will be monitoring the manifestos and scrutinising the speeches . . . [and will try to] secure the support of each party and candidate’s commitments to the ban [ning] of alcohol to minors; the ban[ning] of smoking in public places; the introduction of breathalyser testing and the introduction of a drug treatment court,” he said.

Roach was speaking at a church service yesterday at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Bay Street, The City, commemorating the 19th anniversary of Drug Awareness Month.

“We appeal to all victims of alcohol abuse to put aside your party, religion, race and status differences and stand up and be
counted until Government acts,” he continued.

Roman Catholic Priest Father Harcourt Blackett supported Roach, adding that it was also the Feast of the Epiphany which was symbolised by the Mother and Child.

He said this symbol was powerful and has already been used to combat evil and oppression and could be used to help in the fight against narcotics.

“One of the evil empires which has established itself is the drug empire but we need to arm ourselves with this symbol which is capable of bringing it down,” he said. (CA)

Donald Duck – you are doing a good job of defending the BLP on a number of technical points. This BLP administration actually has quite a good record and has achieved what seems to be a large percentage of its goals for this term, and previous terms.

However you (and the BLP campaign) are failing to address the concerns which many people have about this BLP government and which the DLP is articulating in its campaign. Issues of squandermania, arrogance, corruption, uncontrolled immigration, sale of land to wealthy non-nationals, etc. Where is the defence to these charges?

(Yes, I do support a referendum on the republic issue, after full ventilation of the precise form of republic Barbados would become.)

  • Buppie // January 8, 2008 at 9:07 am

  • Buppie // January 8, 2008 at 9:12 am

Barbados has an abundance of sunlight, yet we spend billions on importing oil for electricity generation.

If we can get 20% of households, businesses and government facilities to go solar the savings in foreign exchange are massive.

In my this area represents the greatest opportunity in terms of greening. A deduction of $5000 does not begin to get close to encouraging anyone to move to solar power, Politics aside, the DLP is ahead on this one.

Good point, not only sunlight but the North east trade winds that blow across a relatively flat island. The wind chargers of old (in Barbados) and that enjoy great use and success in the boating industry should be looked at also. I think recently in the UK the government has made a committment to introduce wind generators on a large scale. It makes a lot of sense.

The truth of the matter is that this complete adminstration is devoid of a moral base and as a result the stealing is uncontrolled and unabated.

The real and only reason that projects such as the VECO PRISON, THE DANOS 3S ROAD WORKS PROJECT, THE OIL STORAGE FACILITY and the list goes on , it is simply because these are international gangsters well versed in the art of hiding money in secret bank accounts for people such as HALLAM NICHOLLS, OWING ARTHUR, GLYNE BANNISTER, NOELESS BLARNEY LYNCH, DAVID SHOREY and the list goes on.

As we all know both of these operating companies are before the courts in the USA and BRITIAN for FRAUD, CORRUPTION,BRIBERY OF GOV’T OFFICIALS IN THE COUNTRIES OF WHICH THEY OPERATE, IF THEY HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF CORRUPION AND FRAUD AND HAVE DONE SO WITH POLITICIANS IN THESE COUNTRIES, THAT ARE MORE AWARE OF THESE CRIMES AND THEY MANAGE THESE CRIMES SO MUCH BETTER THAN US IN BARBADOS WHY THEN DO WE FEEL THAT IT WOULD BE HARD TO BRIBE OR CORRUPT ONES AS DISHONEST AS OWING AND HIS CLANS OF CROOKS ARE?

The result of these crimes is then at election time such as now ones of the ilk of the HALLAM NICHOLLS’S of this world with his new found ill gotten wealth can make the declaration that he will finance the BLP campaign to the tune of what ever it takes to keep he and his party in office and in particular he will be spending a MILLION DOLLARS EACH to unseat two of the DLP candidates, now how ironic this is to run a campaign funded by ill gotten proceeds of fraud against the Barbadian public, to buy back their votes with their own money this is as sad as it can get in our political system.

WHEN THEY CAN STEAL FROM US THE TAXPAYERS AND THEN BUY BACK YOUR VOTE WITH YOUR OWN MONEY, IT IS QUITE A STATEMENT AS TO THE LEVEL OF ARROGANCE THAT THEY SHOW towards us the ones that pay their salary and fuel their CORRUPTION,FRAUD, BRIBERY and STEALING.

People speak about Mascoll not winning his seat back because of betrayal since he crossed the floor. Hammie crossed and when election came around it was as though nothing had changed. May I remind you faithful bloggers that Mr Thompson not so long ago, led the DLP into a general election and under all the pressure and could only muster two seats. He then gave up the role as political leader. The only person brave enough to take up the challenge was Mascoll. Next election Mascoll against all odds won more seats in Parliament. It still tickles my mind as to why David then forced his way back into the fray and I lost respect for the other members for allowing him to do so. After that election that Mascoll led the DLP, Thompson knew that the three year syndrome was appraoching where the electorate would start calling for change and he saw it as his chance to become prime minister. He along with other DLPites forced Mascoll out of the party so David could resume the role of leader and I say it was wrong. Thompson is a power hungry being who would do anything to be Prime Minister. I believe that out of respect for what Mascoll did for the DLP in his time, the other PMs should have stood strong behind Mascoll and tell Thompson to carry his a**. Mascoll should be leading the DLP into this election. They would stand a better chance of winning.

    ‘PANIC IN BLP CAMP’

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS (JANUARY 8, 2008) — Prominent Caribbean journalist, Rickey Singh, says the manner in which Owen Arthur has made the claim of Taiwanese financing of the DLP election campaign, suggests “an element of panic” in the ruling BLP camp.

In an interview on the BBC Caribbean Service, the veteran regional political commentator says he finds the claim “very surprising” and can only conclude it represents “an attempt to divert the DLP from its consistent focus on time for change” in the campaign for the January 15 general election.

“If the support I am witnessing for the opposition which is in contrast to the last election in May 2003 is any guide to go by, I can say there are good grounds for the optimism for change that is so very evident within the ranks of the Opposition,” Singh says.

Arthur made the outrageous claim at a public meeting in Bridgetown last Saturday night where the BLP had a second launch of its election candidates, three days after the first.

The baffling move suggests the first launch on Wednesday night did not have the impact they were hoping for in terms of generating campaign momentum.

    OWEN ARTHUR IN HOT WATER

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS (JANUARY 8, 2008) — Owen Arthur has landed himself in hot water for peddling an outrageous piece of nonsense that the DLP was discussing campaign financing with the Government of Taiwan.

Prominent business executive Leroy Parris, who Arthur claimed was talking to the Taiwanese on behalf of the DLP, says he is seeking legal advice with a view to suing Arthur.

“The statements by the Prime Minister, made on Saturday night, are untruthful, outrageous and totally without foundation,” Parris says in a full-page newspaper statement today.

In the face of surging public support for the DLP ahead of next Tuesday’s general election, a panicking Owen Arthur has been showing increasing signs of desperation.

Instead of debating the issues relevant to the daily challenges facing Barbadians, the outgoing Prime Minister seems more focused on engaging in vicious personal attacks, especially against persons in the DLP.

Speaking at a Barbados Labour Party public meeting, Arthur claimed Parris made a trip to St Kitts over the past weekend to meet with Taiwanese ambassador in Basseterre.

Untrue, Parris says. The purpose of the trip was to attend a New Year’s Gala hosted by Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas, the chairman of CLICO Holdings (Barbados) Ltd explains.

“I conducted no business while there and I met with no diplomatic or other such public official,” Parris explains. In fact, Parris says he has never met with the Taiwanese ambassador.

  • Talking Straight // January 8, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Too totally different scenarios Hammie’s move was people oriented. Mascoll’s was self oriented big big difference.

When Hammie cross the floor everyone in Barbados knew he did that to help the people of his constituency.

And that is not just my opinion, look at all the benefits that went to pinelands creative workshop and all the other community resources in his constituency.

When Mascoll cross it is plain that he did it for him self no one else benefit. If I am wrong show me the evidence in his constituency. And don’t mention paving the road that is not a benefit, it has to be done regardless only his was done as an election gimmick.

So Hammie got the vote after because the people benefit. Mascoll on the other hand will lose his seat the people know that his was for himself.

It is also time that BLP supporters apologize to us for the hardship that your party force on the people of Barbados.

And stop talking about David this and David that, David is the man to run this country and we going with him if the BLP pimps don’t like it to bad

No wonder the blp feel that they can treat the citizens with distain and abuse them as they do, because according to the Brand Name specialist Noeless Blarney Lynch when he states that 10 % of the electorate votes are buyable, and we have HALLAM NICHOLLS who has stolen with the help of Arthur when he can state that he stopped counting his personal wealth at US $ 25 MILLION but he has vowed to buy the blp an election win, and to this extent he is willing to spend $ 2 million to remove two DLP candidates, take the money my friends and tell him thanks for giving back to you what HE HAS STOLEN FROM YOU FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, he has stolen many millions of your tax payers funds get it back in any form and any fashion that you can it back in.

All this talk came out LONG AFTER he defected. At the time he joined the BLP I was still a supporter (not a member) of the BLP. He did that out of greed. Pure and simple. I did not like it and together with other things, it caused me to change my mind from ever supporting the Bees again. It was Mascoll’s intention to destroy the very party of which he was the leader. Can you imagine that?

Looks like Thompson has decided the time is now.

FOR THE PEOPLES SAKE OWEN MUST GO NOW!

    28 mins ago by dlpbarbados.

IT’S THE DEMS’ turn to drop a political bombshell.

The Opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has cancelled all meetings tonight except its national rally at which leader David Thompson has promised to reveal “some of the ammunition I have in storage” and which he was planning to use during the aborted live debates in the lead-up to next Tuesday’s general election.

Titled Campaign Eye-opener One, this meeting will be held at Haggatt Hall, St Michael, near the Emancipation [Bussa] Roundabout. “Some people in this country may not like what I will have to say, but in the public’s interest I believe I have got to say what I know,” Thompson declared.

It was only last Saturday night that the Barbados Labour Party hinted of a bombshell at its Bridgetown meeting when it accused the DLP of wanting to take Barbados into bed with Taiwan instead of the People’s Republic of China.

Thompson said yesterday he would use the opportunity of a single, national political rally to reveal “the latest and most stunning example of governmental mismanagement and squandermania”.

While not giving further insights into the precise nature of tonight’s “bombshell”, the DLP leader said the revelations involved the reckless spending of hundreds of millions of hard-earned taxpayers dollars in a “highly suspicious and certainly non-transparent manner”.

“Mr Arthur has said this election is about leadership and the economic management of this country,” Thompson said.

“I want Barbadians from all walks of life and of all partisan political persuasions to come to Bussa Roundabout tonight and determine for themselves whether Owen Arthur and his BLP Government are deserving of another term, given the hard, cold facts that I will make public at that meeting tonight.”

“The moment I said I wanted a debate on governance, the BLP retreated from the idea of debates. I suspect the Prime Minister feared that I might have been onto something and he did everything humanly possible to pre-empt disclosure.

    Red herring

“Mr Arthur came with this red herring issue of Taiwanese involvement in this campaign to detract persons from examining the real charges that have been levelled against him, dating back to 2003. The time has come for me to give chapter and verse on that entire episode that again involved some very questionable financial transactions.

“This election is not about China or Taiwan. I repeat for the umpteenth time that this Democratic Labour Party has not benefited in any way from a single contribution from either China or Taiwan. This election is about governance and the manner in which we want as a people to be governed. I gave notice during the Hardwood debate that I would have been calling names such as the late Johnnie Cochran in my wrap-up to that debate.

“I do not know if that was the reason for the sudden curtailment of debate, but after tomorrow night (tonight), I expect that the voters of Barbados will be in a position to answer that question for themselves,” he concluded.

Even more remarkable is the fact that in 2 days of operationthe website has taken 65,000 hits this is outstanding by anyones standard.
Congrats to th DLP for the work that they have done in such a short time.

Do you think that the BLP suggestion made twice on their platform tonight that Mascoll win defeat Mascoll by a large majority is correct?
    ……………………………………………………………..
    GP
Anyone can say anything. Mascoll cannot win any seat in NW unless it is won in a lying contest. I think that Mascoll knows he’s a loser.
We are fed up with him. He had a spot meeting in Brandons last week and about 11 ppl were at the meeting. No lie.

  • IT is well with my soul // January 9, 2008 at 1:19 pm

It is sad that Clyde Mascoll a talented and educated Barbadian is being insulted and cursed on the Political platform. Lets face it The Great Errol Barrow was a member of the BLP and broke ranks to form the DLP. Sir Richard Haynes was a member of the DLP and broke ranks to form the NDP. Mascoll is an asset to any Political Party and should be welcomed as he contributes to the Development of Barbados. The DLP made a grave error by pushing him out. But then I could never get over the behavior meted out to Branford Taitt an elder States man. the shouting “GO Home”

  • Wishing in Vain // January 9, 2008 at 1:23 pm

I agree leave him let him be, let the residents maul him instead.

When as a BLP candidate he cannot visit the homes of BLP voters I think that his goose is cooked!!!

Can you suggest why it is that even as a BLP candidate that Mascoll cannot visit the homes of BLP voters?

Like you, I have enjoyed the PNN clips. To see Doug Hoyte in action again is a pleasure. Perhaps our best newscaster on CBC ever.

Although the has taken 65,000 hits. I miss the old site man, where I could listen to the speeches.
The speeches are slow in coming on the new site.
I know nothing is perfect but still.
I hope we get the meeting to night.

I just come from the massive crowd at the DLP meeting. I have two comments to make about the the organisation for the meeting. Firstly, Ronald jones abuse the theory of being a MC. He talk and preach and use up the time where other speakers could have been given an opportunity to speak. Secondly, the headliner do not come in the middle of any meeting. Why whould David speak before Morris, Alleyne and Sinckler. That was a fundamental error and the chairman of this meeting should be fired.

Now on to the meat of the meeting. David Thompson took the Barbadian public for a long ride and now wait to make his first speech on the highway. Questions should have been asked from 2005 in relationship of the mis-conceived highway, I challenged anyone regarding my prior statements of costing, financing, contractor selections, Environmental and Impact Studies and various obstacles with this highway project. Mr. Thompson refuse to address this financial burden on taxpayers, he refuse to discuss the “BOLT” arrangement and its rape on the economy for the next 25 years. Now all of a sudden, David now have mouth after two years of Barbadian engineers and private citizens shouting morning, noon and night about the astronomical costing. This is too late in coming. With the CCB issue, he did confirm the election monies paid to the BLP and the PM. What he did no tell us, is the amount paid to him since he admit that both political parties usually receive campaign money.

His excitement pertaining to corruption was simply lukewarm based on the advanced hype.

Again, the crowd was massive but not all were responsive.

You really come here with that, after what was presented last night we should be discussing how much time the PM and his gang should get in the new Dodds prison.

If Mr. Thompson had discussed this earlier would it make a difference to you?

Barbadians were not waiting for Thompson to drop a bomb to make a decision. We already decided to vote out the gangsters a long time ago.

I was merely stating that Ronald Jones as the MC, over talk during his introductions and that is a fact. I was with a host of DLP supporters who brought it up. Secondly, I mentioned the people who attended the Carlisle meeting were not all BLP supporters. Why didn’t you object to that statement or you only object when I speak about the DLP. Let’s be fair.

Maybe David Thompson had the cheque to Owen Arthur, the cheques to the ‘friends of Parish, cheque to the BLP, the ones written all on the same day. But now is a great time and a political coup for David Thompson to have brought them out.

Now the general public has proof that he got paid for “something”, or to do ’something’ by CCB that wasn’t part of the political campaign.

All what Thompson said in the Bussa speech about the cancellation of the debates, the need to stop corruption in Barbados is exactly what I have been thinking too. I did not go there. The first time I heard it was last night via the BU link. The media has not printed these things.

I do not want to live in a corrupt society.
I do NOT want to live in a corrupt society. David Thompson’s speech spoke to me. I do not want my CHILDREN to live in a corrupt society. The hundreds of millions of unconfirmed theft are what we will never be able to pin on the SRLs, the ‘Societies of Restricted Liability’ whose people pay almost no tax. What have we come to in Barbados? Where are we going? So much money to advertise that you cvannot even hear anything on radio. That’s how big the financial remuneration from these deals amount. That is OUR money.

I have stated I do not wish to live in a corrupt country.

I know the role of the opposition party but my question remains.

What difference would it have made if Mr. Thompson had deal with it a year ago?

Barbados was not ready to listen to the opposition, and my guess would be that you were not ready to listen at that time either.

Actually I don’t think that you are ready to listen even at this late hour.
So if you call the fire truck and they ignore the call the house would still burn down.

Don’t get me wrong I believe that the DLP should have called a no confidence long before hardwood.

One should have been call on OPERATION FREE FLOW but having said that I think at this stage you are just NICK PICKING.

Now that the wrongs have been exposed you and all the other BLP supporters need to join with us and vote out the Barbados Labour Party and stop the suffering.

  • David // January 12, 2008 at 4:00 pm

We endorse the strategy by Thompson now that we have seen how it has played out. The DLP used the Hardwood issue to whip-up a public frenzy of opinion in a way that the ABC would not have done. It was too complex and the average Barbadian would not have taken to it the way many did to Hardwood. Hardwood had several stories embedded in it which provoked much discussion. We can all see the unprecedented rise of the DLP as a credible alternative in the aftermath of the no-confidence matter. This was far removed from the truth only a short time ago. politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result. In the case of the DLP they had to find an issue which they could use to connect to a mass Barbadian public to offset the perception of a party which was not ready to lead .

  • Straight talk // January 12, 2008 at 4:33 pm

    Frankology:

As you claim to be non-partisan, what do you make of Mia’s explanation in yesterday’s Nation?

“However, Mottley said: “The brief which I received . . . [had] a figure of $115 million in relation to the widening of the road. 3S [the contractor] was claiming $125 million for widening the road. But after a series of meetings, we came down to $117 million.

“In relation to the second phase, is the construction of the fly-overs, which will not commence until later this year, and certainly not until we have settled the costs, we have started the process.

“3S was claiming $145 million. The Ministry of Public Works’ estimate was $113 million and the variation was such that I would have asked, with the support of other Cabinet sub-committee members, an independent estimate be obtained in relation to the largest portion on the variation of the prices and that was on the commodity of pre-fabricated steel.”

It just seem a bit strange that for some one sitting on the fence your arguments are a bit one sided.

As David said in his post “politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result.”

I endorse that once it is not a selfish position or illegal. I don’t think that Mr. Thompson’s strategy was a selfish one because I can see how this can pan out for the good of all Barbadians.

I am also saying that the people were not ready to listen to the DLP base on what was being said on the ground and on the call in programs.

It was stated on more than one occasion that many of Mr. Thompson’s strategies backfired on him.

So I don’t see how anyone can blame him for playing a bit more circumspect this time around.

Personally I think this shows that he has matured as a politician and as a leader and that argues well for Barbados.

  • frankology // January 12, 2008 at 9:42 pm

As David said in his post “politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result.”
    ……………………………………………………………………..
Achieving the results for whom. Is it based on opportunism or should the Nation be informed of an issue that will affect us in the future. This have nothing to do with partisanship, it is reality. As I see it, the DLP should, could and will win the elections without the last minute discussion on something that was in the public domain for a period of time.

When the DLP get into power, the BOLT system of financing will still continue since the majority of countries are using this private banking sector arrangement to finance projects. These same financiers will be responsible for the overall payment up front whilst the Government will repay a yearly amount. Would they be a moratorium with the BOLT agreements when a new Government is formed?

    Vanishing views of the ocean
    Web Posted – Sun Dec 09 2007
On the Editorial page of the December 3, 2007 Barbados Advocate, there was a column written by Nicholas Cox about the disappearance of our Windows to the Sea.
Barbados has always been known for its lovely beaches, among other attractions. This past year or two we have noticed lovely houses along the West Coast being sold for condominiums, and one wonders if they all have been sold and how much revenue they are going to bring into the island.

Hotels employ a staff which gives employment to the locals. Condos, when and if sold, will more likely be used as holiday places which will be closed up when not in use, with no revenue coming in and less employment. The worst part of this sudden splurge is that it has taken away all the beauty of our special island and leaves very little entry to the beach and sea for the locals, although our beaches are not private.

So does this mean the locals and others have to ask permission to enter their properties to get to our beaches? One drives along the St. Peter, St. James and Hastings areas (to name a few) and there is no view of the sea, only wooden fences blocking the scenery while the construction goes on. Personally, I think it is greed! I have already heard many repeat, long-staying visitors saying that if we get like Spain and other over-developed countries, spoilt by condos and high rise buildings, they will not return. Apart from the tourist aspect of the problem, how do we know that these high rise buildings are not going to affect our coral stone levels of land (and the coral reefs) with all the drilling and digging going on? Interesting!
