Vanishing views of the ocean
Web Posted - Sun Dec 09 2007
On the Editorial page of the December 3, 2007 Barbados Advocate, there was a column written by Nicholas Cox about the disappearance of our Windows to the Sea.
Barbados has always been known for its lovely beaches, among other attractions. This past year or two we have noticed lovely houses along the West Coast being sold for condominiums, and one wonders if they all have been sold and how much revenue they are going to bring into the island.

Hotels employ a staff which gives employment to the locals. Condos, when and if sold, will more likely be used as holiday places which will be closed up when not in use, with no revenue coming in and less employment. The worst part of this sudden splurge is that it has taken away all the beauty of our special island and leaves very little entry to the beach and sea for the locals, although our beaches are not private.

So does this mean the locals and others have to ask permission to enter their properties to get to our beaches? One drives along the St. Peter, St. James and Hastings areas (to name a few) and there is no view of the sea, only wooden fences blocking the scenery while the construction goes on. Personally, I think it is greed! I have already heard many repeat, long-staying visitors saying that if we get like Spain and other over-developed countries, spoilt by condos and high rise buildings, they will not return. Apart from the tourist aspect of the problem, how do we know that these high rise buildings are not going to affect our coral stone levels of land (and the coral reefs) with all the drilling and digging going on? Interesting!

It just seem a bit strange that for some one sitting on the fence your arguments are a bit one sided.
...............................................................................
With all respect to you, things might look one-sided once due to neutrality. I am not trying to criticize the Dems, but I am trying to place things in the right perspective with an open mind. I must say it is very enlightening to have a debate with you, Adrian Hinds and my friend Jerome who castigate everything I am trying to express. But, that's what you call democracy.

As David said in his post “politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result.”
................................................................................
Achieving the results for whom. Is it based on opportunism or should the Nation be informed of an issue that will affect us in the future. This have nothing to do with partisanship, it is reality. As I see it, the DLP should, could and will win the elections without the last minute discussion on something that was in the public domain for a period of time.

When the DLP get into power, the BOLT system of financing will still continue since the majority of countries are using this private banking sector arrangement to finance projects. These same financiers will be responsible for the overall payment up front whilst the Government will repay a yearly amount. Would they be a moratorium with the BOLT agreements when a new Government is formed?

And please, I am not a member or supporter of the Bees or Dees.

My apologies to you Frankology if you are not a member of either party.

It just seem a bit strange that for some one sitting on the fence your arguments are a bit one sided.

As David said in his post "politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result."

I endorse that once it is not a selfish position or illegal. I don't think that Mr. Thompson's strategy was a selfish one because I can see how this can pan out for the good of all Barbadians.

I am also saying that the people were not ready to listen to the DLP base on what was being said on the ground and on the call in programs.

It was stated on more than one occasion that many of Mr. Thompson's strategies backfired on him.

So I don't see how anyone can blame him for playing a bit more circumspect this time around.

Personally I think this shows that he has matured as a politician and as a leader and that argues well for Barbados.

Frankology:

As you claim to be non-partisan, what do you make of Mia's explanation in yesterday's Nation?

"However, Mottley said: "The brief which I received . . . [had] a figure of $115 million in relation to the widening of the road. 3S [the contractor] was claiming $125 million for widening the road. But after a series of meetings, we came down to $117 million.

"In relation to the second phase, is the construction of the fly-overs, which will not commence until later this year, and certainly not until we have settled the costs, we have started the process.

"3S was claiming $145 million. The Ministry of Public Works' estimate was $113 million and the variation was such that I would have asked, with the support of other Cabinet sub-committee members, an independent estimate be obtained in relation to the largest portion on the variation of the prices and that was on the commodity of pre-fabricated steel."

Especially its total contradidiction of Gline's statement.

We endorse the strategy by Thompson now that we have seen how it has played out. The DLP used the Hardwood issue to whip-up a public frenzy of opinion in a way that the ABC would not have done. It was too complex and the average Barbadian would not have taken to it the way many did to Hardwood. Hardwood had several stories embedded in it which provoked much discussion. We can all see the unprecedented rise of the DLP as a credible alternative in the aftermath of the no-confidence matter. This was far removed from the truth only a short time ago. politics is not always about what is the intelligent thing to do it is what will work better to achieve the result. In the case of the DLP they had to find an issue which they could use to connect to a mass Barbadian public to offset the perception of a party which was not ready to lead .

Barbados was not ready to listen to the opposition, and my guess would be that you were not ready to listen at that time either.
...............................................................................
How can you say the people where not ready. Did he mention anything to the public?. The same way he spoke about Hardwood, he could have spoken about the Highway issue which to mind is more crucial to our economy.

And please, I am not a member or supporter of the Bees or Dees.

Maybe Mr. Thompson should have discussed the BOLT in 2006 but what difference would it have made?
……………………………………………………………………..
Do you know the role of an opposition party? The role is to alert wrong immediately, not wait till the house done burn and then call the fire service. So it is nonsense you saying that it tactical based on timing to wait two years while the country suffers.

------------------------------------------

I know the role of the opposition party but my question remains.

What difference would it have made if Mr. Thompson had deal with it a year ago?

Barbados was not ready to listen to the opposition, and my guess would be that you were not ready to listen at that time either.

Actually I don't think that you are ready to listen even at this late hour.
So if you call the fire truck and they ignore the call the house would still burn down.

Don't get me wrong I believe that the DLP should have called a no confidence long before hardwood.

One should have been call on OPERATION FREE FLOW but having said that I think at this stage you are just NICK PICKING.

Now that the wrongs have been exposed you and all the other BLP supporters need to join with us and vote out the Barbados Labour Party and stop the suffering.

We are tired of the spin the BLP and its leadership screw up. They had the opportunity to do what was right and they didn't.

So point out how the BLP let us down, not how Mr. Thompson let us down.

Don’t get me wrong I believe that the DLP should have called a no confidence long before hardwood.

They had the opportunity to do what was right and they didn’t.

So point out how the BLP let us down, not how Mr. Thompson let us down.

Frank:

It's tough at the top isn't it?

Having to justify every single thought which pops into your brain.

Especially when you can't.

Your nemesis, Wishing In Vain, has the same single mindedness as yourself, but at least he comes up with regular nuggets of information.
Unfortunately your attempts at detailed fact verification are so out of place on a blog as the flow gets stymied when no proof is readily at hand.

Know what I mean?

Home with my family watching Chris from your party on "My TV". Now, where are you?

From 2005, we were brandished with cost, in June 2006 we had the first increase before any work start, in 20o7 we heard another increase in the cost. All this time, this writer was enlightening the public, Where were you during those periods, where was David's voice during those periods.

If you don't know about this issue, please research and get back to me.

You seeker of the truth, you demander of accurate facts, you Doubting Thomas finger poker, where are you?

To remind everyone; you were bringing to this board evidence that Highway cost over-runs were in the public domain in 2006.
