We must report the ‘rush’ we got when we exercised our right to vote today in the election. We cannot imagine why people would be so ignorant to want to vote.
Anyway besides a couple ‘issues’ in Mascoll/Sinckler and one other all went smoothly based on reports reaching us.

Early results for Mascoll is not promising. According to Wickham the behaviour favouring a DLP seat is holding.
Coolman // January 15, 2008 at 9:16 PM
As the first votes come in, the numbers I am hearing, I’ll stick my neck out and call a landslide already.
Benn giving Owen a fair run, against an incumbent PM, that is something.
It’s over.
Georgie Porgie // January 15, 2008 at 9:20 PM
Licks sharing from north to south, and from east to west. Murdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
David // January 15, 2008 at 9:28 PM
Cool it people. Early results show DLP holding or improving and there is an early trend. We however stress EARLY.
There is a big swing away from Owen. Although Arthur will win it does not look good given the size swing.
Systems Caribbean is predicting of the 14 seats declared the DLP will win 11.

David // January 15, 2008 at 10:28 PM
We firmly believe that the Nation Publisher/Editors should be fired for paying for the CHAPO poll and treating Wickham like dirt. CHAPO has no track record and Boxill had no knowledge of the uniqueness of the Barbadian electors; yet he was able to come to Barbados and get paid for work which in essence was a beta project.
Wickham should demand an apology.

I feel like if I just won the lottery. My faith has been restored in my fellow B’dians. This should definitely let all aspiring politicians know that we are really not afraid to vote them out when we see the need. The DLP should take note of this.
B F P E // January 15, 2008 at 11:14 PM
Warrior,
“And January 15, 2008 will mark the end of the BLP.”
In case you don’t understand, January 15, 2008 will only mark the end of the last term of a BLP government.
The BLP party and its supporters are NOT going to disappear.

Don’t worry. I have a feeling the blogs will continue to report the news.

I am elated at this impending victory, however I hope that we the electorate will not sit back on our laurels like we did when BLP was in power and saying we wid dem and don’t bring them to account.
As I said earlier I voted consciously and for Democracy, but if the DLP think that they will ride rough shod over me they got another think coming.
They must be held accountable for anything that they do from here on in, WE have to set the parameters early.

I believe some one might have to get some oxygen for George Belle he seems to be eating his fine clothes. He looks very dark on the TV is there a paramedic near by? I noticed that Ms. Husbands glasses seem to be slipping a bit, might be perspiration who knows
Mr. Belle dared to put his reputation on the line and back a poll that even the ducks knew was erroneous, a good name is more valuable then precious gold.

I’m pleased to see the DLP being given the chance to fail to deliver their many promises. I would be very happy for the country if they achieve what they said they would do, but I really don’t believe them, and having seen many a new government come and go in Barbados I don’t expect any radical change from what the BLP was doing. Names and faces may change but it will be business as usual.
But… time alone will tell.
(And I really DO look forward to my bank holiday tomorrow.)

I would like to suggest to all that the “silly season” is now officially over. We have a new government and a new prime minister but we are all still Bajans and this country must come first. We must work together .. We still have to realise that we exist in a global environment which will become VERY difficult in the next few years.. The US is set for a recession which will affect our tourism greatly. It wont be easy for the government…
But one thing BFPE .. the promises made by the BLP were much more unattainable then what is promised by the DLP.

Why is CBC allowing Mr. Arthur to run his mouth on National TV, he had thirteen years to have his say
frankology // January 16, 2008 at 12:09 AM
I did say from the outset, this win by the DLP was based on the theme that was even used by the DLP as “A time for a change”. People realised that the BLP was in power for the past 3 terms; and even if the DLP was in the Bees position, the results that is manifesting would be the same. What we have to do as a nation, is to allow the new administration to take the mantle of Government and show us that they can run the affairs of the country. We hope that all the election promises would become law within the time frame promised.
Mr. Thompson, I salute you for your massive win and look forward to the best of things from you. Cheers to our new Prime Minister.

Barbados, in the only opinion poll that counts, has reminded all politicians where real power really lies.
The BLP has suffered for its arrogant disconnect from the electorate.
Lies, pompasetting and intimidation are not leadership and they have been made to pay for their self–delusion.
Politicians are not elected for their talents, but are given power by us to manage the country to the best of their ability.
They are on a 5 year probation and will be judged by their “bosses” at the next election on their actual performance not a divine right to rule.
This applies just as much to the incoming government as guidance, as to the BLP looking for an explanation.
The promised Integrity, Transparency and Accountability legislation must be given the teeth necessary to make it truly effective.
Any fudging on this will cast doubt on the whole exercise, and the removal of this doubt and suspicion is the whole point of this crusade against secrecy.
As to the results, I welcome the change of administration, but perhaps perversely I wish the margin of victory could have been smaller.
Democracy requires a strong and effective opposition to work to the people’s benefit.
My teeth grated each time Roett pronounced “ methinks the Ayes have it” after no informed debate.
After Arthur resigns as Leader of the Opposition and joins Payne in the northern wilderness, both being reluctant to make the long journey to Parliament, Mia will be left with a only a handful of working MPs, and a pretty poor hand at that.
Their mettle as true politicians will be put to the test. I hope they come through for the country’s sake.
At least she will be rid of turncoat Mascoll, last laugh Lynch and charlatan “ Reverend” Atherley.
Particularly pleasing to me is the rejection of Liz Thompson’s and Prescod’s attempts to promote racial prejudice.
Another plus is the election of James Paul.
Agriculture, long a backwater in Bajan politics, has to be given absolute priority in our efforts towards food security if we are to survive in the face of coming world scarcity.
Finally my commiserations to Taan Abed and Irene S-G ( if the recount goes against her), I have been impressed by both of you, how you have handled your campaigns, sometimes in the face of disgraceful tactics.
I know you will live to fight another day successfully.
Best of luck for the senate seats you deserve.

Nonsense: It was evident to me from the time that Billie Miller was announce as the campaign manager that Mia was not about to take chances with her legacy of wining elections as the BLP’s manager. This has nothing to do with Mia’s role or control of events. This victory was the people’s victory. This victory was by Barbadians for Barbadians and inspite of any thing Mia would have said or could have done. It is time that people realize that Mia Mottley, and Owen Arthur indeed the entire political class have no power besides what we the people give to them. In 1999 after the BLP election win, Liz Thompson penned her thoughts on the election in a nationnews article. She agree to the prevailing pundit commentry that the ‘94 and 99 elections slogan of going with Owen and Owen now more than ever, presented a serious problem to the party that they would have to address. I believe that Owen targeted her for those comments, and Liz retreated from them, as did party. It clear that she was right as were the pundits back then that putting all your eggs in one basket is never a a good financial strategy and certainly was not a good political strategy, and this is ever more so in light of the cheque confrontation between Thompson and Arthur, a confrontation that Thompson won hands down. It appeared to me and many others that the BLP ran one candidate in this election, and that candidate had serious defects. Therefore it is safe for me to say that this was Owen Arthurs defeat, and base on that he should relinquish the leadership, but to do so is to demonstrate the blatant lie of the election campaign, and of Mia and all of them who went overboard in Bigging up their leader, clearly intent on demonstrating to the public that in OWEN ARTHUR they have a leader in whom they are well please. Is this now only true when they are winners? can’t he lead while in opposition? I think they will attempt to deal with this by publicaly offering the LOTO to Arthur and to have him publically decline. Honesty is not something that this current BLP lot is in tune with. They will at all cost attempt to perpatrate the image of a united party,…the great LIE that it is.

I understand your concerns, which I am sure, are shared by many. As a person who spent nearly forty years in national, regional, and international public service, let me assure you that while we may not have written protocols for the change of administration, as they do in the USA, the files in the ministries are not controlled by the politicians, but by the civil servants.
In any event, we are now in an age of electronic documentation and even if an attempt were made to erase data, short of removing the computer hard drives and destroying them, the data can be retrieved.
I am sure that there are a number of retired civil servants on whom the new Prime Minister can call for advice, as others have done, in the past. So you can be of good comfort.

I am looking further down the road after this massive win by the DLP.
First, I am looking at the press conference by the Prime Minister-elect. When asked how he felt about winning, his statement was ‘he have to thank Hartley Henry for the victory” he also state that the team was taken to another country for a retreat with the political strategist Hartley Henry.
Secondly, Prime Minister-elect failed to recognize the work by Brandford Taitt, as a matter of fact, he never mentioned his name.
These are fundamental errors that partisan writers failed to comment on, and this have nothing to do with partisan politics.

They will inherit projects that they will have to see through and bajans are not foolish they will read between the lines, as they did with the BLP. Look where they are now. Hi Frank:
It is about time in Barbados’ development that Ministers have some working knowledge of the Ministries that they are given to manage.
I can only hope that the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (all Civil Engineering disciplines) will finally be managed by a Civil Engineer … that would be Richard Sealy.
Best regards,

It would be exceptional if ministers were appointed according to their skills. James Paul is the obvious choice for Agriculture but I’m not sure how connected he is. I would really, really, really hope that Kellman and his “airport in St. Lucy” does not get a ministry. Speaker would be fine.
Georgie Porgie // January 16, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Whats wrong with an airport in St Lucy?
Dominica has two airports?
Kellman talks more sense than most people understand. His delivery is the problem.
The speaker should be Estwick – his delivery and behavior is abominable.
james // January 16, 2008 at 12:56 PM
2 airports = additional noise pollution over the island = duplication of everything from air traffic control to infrastructure to customs = higher costs = higher taxes. 1 airport with more runways or terminals makes much more sense. I have heard Kellman speak a few times and he is well loved by his constituents but his presentation and his ideas are so far left field that they’re out of view.

Poor fellow just lost he pick and got new baby tuh feed. :D Poor Ismeal Roett, will David have compassion and still give him a knighthood? yuh know David can be a real bleeding heart at times. Oh god wuh bout Hendy Bovell? will the government seek to remove this political Tommy Tucker?
……Kerrie Simmonds was never suited to elective politics (Mia version of national politicians who don’t have to face the people in the constituency so often is suited to him) he is simply not a people’s person, he came to politics knowing the pay and then made noise for more money, He came into politics knowing the cultural practices of political representation and sought to rewrite people’s expectations without even so much as attempt to win persons over to his approach, please don’t send this arrogant SOB back to my consituency.
He shouldn’t have won 2003 and was only able to do by 176 votes all because people voting at Bagatelle pavillion in St.Thomas thought they had to vote in St.Thomas. De Dems in that polling area don’t really bother to vote in the lost cause of Thomas elections. Now that they understood that they have a chance of voting with other DEMS in St.James Proper as a result of them living in St.thomas but assigned to vote in St.James central constituency, they came out and push the DLP candidate over Kerrie this time around. A 176 votes and he thought all he had to do was to buy people, I knew from way back in 2004 that he first success was his last mass. I am sure that in his usuall angry condesending manner that he is cussing people in the same the way that Cappy Greenidge would have cuss de people of St.Phillip.

Wickham was vindicated last night as early as 10pm when he accurately and articulately analyzed the raw data coming in from a handful of constituencies in St. Michael. He was steadfast and confident about his polls in favor of the Dems even before all the boxes in town were counted. The man is simply a brilliant pollster.

What should be done about the Advocate, CBC, and the Nation?
==============================
Get a truly independent newspaper and TV station. It’s time to kick the 3 government lackey news mediums to the curb. It might be a good thing to give away the paper free daily, like they do in major US cities. And no, you wouldn’t be in any special interest group back pocket because your ads will be the income generator. The Nation and Advocate will then be forced to get their act together.

ha ha ha ha Bees think they are still in power. Their call for unity and love of country is hallowed and filled with thoughts of self preservation. I feel confident that those who supported the Dees this time around don’t need to be reminded about love of country, for they remained civil and law abiding while the last government sat by and did nothing about their illegal immigrant concerns, and at times even bragging about engaging the services of said persons, We remained civil and law abiding in the face of verbal attacks and name calling for our willingness to let our voices be heard on any number of things that we felt aggrieved about, We remained civil and law abiding when the last government refuse to engage us, respond to us, and deny us access to information as it pertains to how our money was spent. Don’t you preach to us about unity and love of country, for it was the unity and love of country that led Barbadians to unite in a common cause of ridding the halls of power of this last corrupt lot, it was love of self and country that said no more, and that the risk of an untried leader though great is needed and necessary at this time. The time for change was evident and compelling not as a result of an unprecedented 4th term try, but to my mind more so by the unprecedented cost overruns, and corrupting practices of this last government. We the voters and supporters of change are the ones by our example that can ably and truthfully demonstrate what love of country is all about, not you, not the Bees.

Jerome, I did vote and I place my vote for a change which was always on the card. I said upfront that a believe in a “Two-term Government”. This system will curtail and massive shifting or wastage of our tax dollars. and allowing the public to deal with inefficiencies sooner rather than later. Remember, complacencies do not prevail in the first five years, but during the second term where the country ignores real economic warning signs. Even the Opposition sometimes fail to detect these signs until a major scandal manifest itself. We must now as a Nation, remove ourself from the doubts of who we spend our time from 6 in the morning to 6 in the evening, ensuring that this is the Government we want. Let’s rally around our new Prime Minister and his team and push Barbados to greater heights. Democracy does prevail in our Island.
Frankology – still will be neutral and fearless.

am was Aaron Truss born here? Do you agree with me that only citizens of Barbados, born or naturalize should be allowed to vote? and the we shoud away with allowing commonwealth citizens the right to vote in our elections?
B F P E // January 16, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Adrian Hinds,
“we shoud away with allowing commonwealth citizens the right to vote in our elections?”
Are you targeting GUYANESE in particular, or are you also including the BRITISH who constitute the largest foreign nationals with voting power in Barbados?
One thing that I am very displeased with the BLP about is their failure to make Barbados a republic.
The right to vote in Barbadian elections should be a special right reserved ONLY to citizens of this country, and I would not even include the naturalised ones in that. A citizen of Barbados must be Bajan by birth, not by documentation. Anyone with at least one Bajan parent, and (grudgingly and with lots of conditions) anyone born in Barbados to foreign parents.
All these Guyanese (and Jamaicans and others) in Barbados now, when their Barbados-born children grow up, they will be Bajans because that is the environment in which they will grow up, so I have no problem with that.
Commendations to prime minister David Thompson on the decision to let pensioners cash their cheques tomorrow Thursday since Friday and Monday are holidays. It is a sign of a caring government…. though it could also be good publicity gimmicks.

Tell us about the former minister of toursim Noeless Blarney Lynch when he recently received a bill for construction work done on his housefor the sum of $ 20,000.00 and how he called the contractor and told him that he Lynch was the owner of a million dollar home and why would he the contractor send he Lynch a bill for $ 20,000.00 and that he the contractor could take the bill and stuff it where the sun does not shine.
That was a ploy that may have worked prior to yesterday, my advice to you Mr Comtractor is to move to seek your payment right away failing this to seek legal action against this scamp and a crook via the Law Courts of Barbados.
Time is longer than Twine my friend Lynch.

Relevant Scriptures to what we just witnessed
Proverbs 28:15-24 “A wicked ruler is as dangerous to the poor as a lion or bear attacking them. Only a stupid prince will oppress his people, but a king will have a long reign if he hates dishonesty and bribes. A murderer’s tormented conscience will drive him into the grave. Don’t protect him! The honest will be rescued from harm, but those who are crooked will be destroyed. Hard workers have plenty of food; playing around brings poverty. The trustworthy will get a rich reward. But the person who wants to get rich quick will only get into trouble. Showing partiality is never good, yet some will do wrong for something as small as a piece of bread. A greedy person tries to get rich quick, but it only leads to poverty. In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. Robbing your parents and then saying, “What’s wrong with that?” is as serious as committing murder. Greed causes fighting; trusting the LORD leads to prosperity. Trusting oneself is foolish, but those who walk in wisdom are safe. Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing. But a curse will come upon those who close their eyes to poverty.”

Georgie Porgie,
You and that biblical crap again. Were you quoting the same thing after the results of the 2003 elections?
You are nothing but an old fool and (like many self-proclaimed Christians) a hypocrite.
We will be cackling with glee within months, maybe even weeks, and possibly even days, when these same praise-singing DLP yardfowls of today start to sing a different tune as events of the future unfold. One of our people saw something on another blog posted by a DLP supporter who was lambasting David Thompson and the new government already over the holiday on Friday. Of course, when it comes to ungratefulness and backstabbing, that is a well-known Bajan trait in anything involving money and power. Just wait till weekend when the ministers are announced and the in-fighting starts…. you will see just how dirty the D in DLP stands for.

The Bible is not crap at all.
I am not old, and I do not have a mask on or two faces.
I am neither D or B, but I do rejoice that the Word is true and I delight in yesterday’s whipping of the BLP and the fall of so many of their arrogant members.
I am sure that there are those in the DLP , who like you , and I are tainted with sin. I am sure too that such will soon reveal thier true colors. I am sure too that the Bajan populace will deal with them in short order too, as they have done in the past in 1976 and 1994.
If the current DLP administration is lacking, they will soon be exposed for all to see. And they will be dealt with, perhaps more firmly than before, because of the presence of these blogs performing the job as watch dog. watco
B F P E // January 16, 2008 at 9:45 PM
Georgie Porgie,
blogs crap.
I am often in Bridgetown, as well as up and down Barbados nearly every day, and I don’t hear a damn body in Barbados talking about Bajan blogs.
Ordinary word-of-mouth “news” (gossip) in Barbados, face -to-face or over-the-phone, has more traffic than any Bajan blog.
Blogs are no watchdogs in Bajan society. For exiles like you who are stranded in faraway foreign lands, they may be an excellent source of information and mis-information about life in Barbados that you are shut out from.

Are you targeting GUYANESE in particular, or are you also including the BRITISH who constitute the largest foreign nationals with voting power in Barbados?
=============================
I am referencing the provision in the representation of the people’s act of Barbados that gives rights to commonwealth citizens. Do you think this act refers to Guyanese only????? and would you have preferred that i was so stupid to have refer to them alone???? You should be aware that the provision only applys to Commonwealth citizens resident in Barbados and that are not nauteralize citizens. Adrian Loverage is a citizen of Barbados and there requires no special provision or act to vote.
One thing that I am very displeased with the BLP about is their failure to make Barbados a republic.
==============================
I too wish for the republican status but not in the manner the BLP proposed it. I would wish for a more meaningfull and impactfull change to our contitution to include significant changes to our system government as may have been recommended in the constitutional reform recommendations. Certainly it would have had to been more deep than changing the name of the Head of Barbados from govenor general to president. But becoming a republic would not have by it self remove the provision in the representation of the poeople’s act that gave the right to vote to commonwealth citizens.
==============================
==============================
Why stop at your punitive requirements? why not go further and make decisions as to whom of the natural born population are fit to vote.

Look at the juvenile language, the boasting, the threats. Classic hormonal pre-pubescent activity. The failure of the Barbados Labour Party to recognise the impact of blogs and forums on the electorate has cost them dearly. BarbadosFreePress and other blogs attacked the government constantly without any VISIBLE response from the BLP. This played a huge roll in swaying the 18-35 demographic, which is known to make up a large percentage of the undecided voters (I don’t think I need to remind anyone of the importance of this group). Never underestimate the power of the Internet. That said, we must all be grateful to the party for their 15 years of stellar service to the country and be thankful to the members, especially the outgoing PM, for the huge contribution they have made towards the development of Barbados.

YOU KNOW WHY SOME POWERS ARE SCEPTICAL ABOUT EMPLOYING YOU AND YOU HAVE TO ‘GO A BEG-GIN’?
NO? IT IS SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE STUNT YOU PULLED AT THE BELIEVE CONCERT….
NOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO PULL SONGS OUT OF A HAT
MEANINGFUL AND PATRIOTIC SONGS- WHY DIDN’T YOU NOT HAVE IT READY FOR PRINCESS RIH RIH?
SO WHEN YOU SING THE PIG TAIL SONG (AN ITEM THAT IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED, PEOPLE ARE STILL BEING ARRESTED FOR, MIND YOU) WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR CROP OVER?
THIS TIME WHEN THE CULTURAL AMBASSADOR FOR THE PLACE IN ST. JAMES AND MOTHER AFRICA, START TO REPLY TO YOU I HOPE \YOU CAN TAKE IT AND YOUR FAMILY DON’T WASTE OVERSEAS CALLS TO ASK FOR AN APOLOGY..LET THEM KNOW EARLY (IF THEY ARE STILL WITH YOU-SINCE YOU DID NOT WIN IN 2007) THAT YOU HAVE REARED YOUR UGLY HEAD AGAIN!
WELL BOYCE YOU COULD SEND THIS TO HIM BY EMAIL, TEXT OR POST OFFICE. IT WILL GO ON UNDERGROUND AND FREE PRESS TOO….HE WILL GET IT…
NEXT ITEM:
SOMEONE ASKED IF SOME POWER COULD NOT HAVE PUT A STOP TO MR. KLEEN WITH THE SWEATY FACE, JUST BE WORKING WITH OR AROUND A SHOW THAT HE HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH – THE ALMIGHTY FATHER IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN STOP HIM..HIS TOTAL ARROGANCE TAKES COMPLETE CONTROL..HE IS LIKE A PERSON POSSESSED.
NUFF REVEALED!
WAPAT!
