Free speech is one thing but when someone makes a comment - do we take it for what they really feel? or is it made just to inflame others, and they really do not care! That is the problem with blogs, You can say what you want to. - Even if it is not not you really feel - just to inflame others - to get their response in a moment of anger!

the problem that some "journalists" have with blogging is that it allows regular people to share their views and opinions without being censored. I think its high time that bajans and others be allowed to speak freely without being thought of as enemies of the state. journalists think they know everything, and that's the problem. journalists have their own kind of censorship depending on who their agency is tied to. It's about time free speech is not just a theory.

As found on SlashDot.org (the ultimate Geek Blog), originally published by the Associated Press (AP). And there are those who still argue that anonymity is inexcusable...

"DAMASCUS, Syria: A human rights group says a 24-year-old Syrian blogger has been convicted and sentenced to three years in prison on charges of undermining the prestige of the state and weakening national morale.

"In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Wednesday, The National Organization for Human Rights in Syria condemned the verdict issued the day before as "outrageous" and called for Tarek Bayassi's immediate release.

"The rights group says Bayassi's sentence was commuted to three years after an original sentence of six years. Bayassi was arrested last May in northwest Syria for surfing sites of Syrian opposition groups and posting comments online.

"The Syrian government frequently arrests activists for posting comments critical of the government online.

As an aside, I highly recommend anyone seriously interested in blogging check out Slashdot.org. They faced, and managed, the issue of uncooperative and abusive anonymous posters years ago. As with most issues in Barbados, it's already been successfully handled elsewhere.

Learning from others is a virtue, not a weakness....

Living in the USA, I have watched mainstream media- namely NY Times, Daily News, CBS, NBC and others - try to ignore and put down what was then deemed a gossip rag "National Enquirer".
NE used to have all the breaking news about the stars and those working in the media b4 anyone else, and the scoops were coming so regularly that is became embarrasing to mainstream media. Eventuially mainstream media started using stories from the NE and giving NE credit to the disclosures. So to BU and BFP keep up the pressure, blowhards like Carl Moore and Jewel Forde -who last Thursday condemned blogging -are part of the elitist who have to eat crow. By the way Jewel how come you let conman xxx xxx fool u? Dont you know that once you have a little something he latches on to you. The guy had proposed to you and two other women at the same time, one at Sagicor and another in Canada who is the cousin of a famous female politician who got him the job as consultant during BLP time. That should stuff your mouth Jewel.

Well BFP is 'moderating' all of my opposition comments and allowing the most obscene criticisms of foreign cultures to get through unhindered. Those madman are on a campaign to smear everything non-Western. What Hypocrisy to speak on the one hand of the freedom of the internet and blogging sites, and on the other hand to callously promote contempt of foreign cultures while censoring all opposition comments.

Blogs allow anyone to have a say, and express thier viewpoint- not just those who think that they only have the right to have a say.

BU, for example, attempts to daily or every other day to bring to our attention topics worthy of consideration not even thought about by the mainstream media.

The result is some robust discussion- very often from persons with a wealth of knowledge on the topic, who might not otherwise, have the opportunity, or take the time or make the effort to enlighten us.

The imformality of blogs is one of its chief encouragements.
