The following letter was contained in an email received from an email address which BU recognizes to be that of Mr. Norman Faria, Guyana’s Honorary Consul in Barbados. It is no secret that Barbados Underground has been strident in promoting awareness of the big issue of undocumented workers in Barbados, many we know to be Guyanese. We have gone one step further to address the lack of a discernible planning of a multi-ethnic society for Barbados. There are enough country models which we have cited to show the folly of not properly managing large inflows of ethnic groups i.e. Indians, Chinese et al in a Barbados which has enjoyed a stable environment comprised mainly of Blacks and Whites through the years. Despite increasing accusations of being xenophobic from some quarters, we remain steadfast in our views. We urge our commenters to be clear and dispassionate in their arguments. We are aware that this is a topic where emotive language will appear and in this regard we ask you to refer to BU’s comment policy. We do not condone censorship but we will be fearless to ensure that any discussion which ensues will not denigrate to a base level.
The Prime Minister of Barbados, although not mentioning Guyanese raised the problem of unplanned migration last week at the CARICOM Summit. His government has also debated an amendment to the Immigration Act.

SUBJECT: INFLAMMATORY RHETORIC ON RADIO TALK SHOW.
Dear Commissioner Dottin:
The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Guyana in Barbados presents its compliments and wishes to refer to the above subject matter.
Further to my last letter (11 January 2006) to you regarding the airing and/or printing of inflammatory articles and viewpoints in some of the island’s print and electronic media and which specifically target Guyanese, I write once again to draw your attention to another blatant example. This latest airing can only serve to stir up racial and other tensions and bring the essentially good reputation of all Guyanese into disrepute.
On Monday, 17 March 2008, a caller was heard on the widely listened to programme “Down to Brass Tacks”, which is carried on the Starcom Network station VOB, referring to (generally Hindu) Indo-Guyanese in a derogatory, stereotypical and indeed racist manner. Were Afro-Guyanese or any other race, colour or religion targeted, I would make the same complaint. Among the more shameful, uncalled for, unsubstantiated and unjustified statements made by this caller:
“We have no problems with Christians and Moslems but we do with Hindus “
“(Crime in Barbados) is Hindu Guyanese and Trinidad habits”
“The police need to start checking these Indians (including) when they see them on the street…that is where the problem is”
“Hindus is the ones causing problems with the fellows (at the workplace where they will work for less)”
“The word dougla is a Hindu word meaning outcast”
The above are from my notes taken of the programme. The exact and complete remarks may be obtained by your investigating officers from the station’s recording of the programme. As I informed Mr.Peter Wickham, the moderator of the particular programme and a really professional and principled person against whom I have no complaint —indeed, he rebuked the caller for his apparent xenophobia and ignorance– when I called into the programme at the nearing the end of the show, I have nothing against people calling into the programmes to engage in democratic discussion and debate. In fact, as I told him while complimenting him on his stance, I greatly admire the deep and democratic media culture in Barbados. I listen to the programmes every chance I get.
We must all defend the time honoured achievement of free speech. This freedom, as you would agree, doesn’t exist as an abstract concept. Hate filled rhetoric designed to stir up racial and other tensions, discord and animosity among peoples have no freedom of speech. What I criticised are the programmes’ call screeners and/or producers who should censor out such hateful rantings which undoubtedley embarass the majority of decent minded Barbadians and others listening to the programmes. Management should set professional guidelines for such personnel. I was especially incensed in this recent infraction because I have written several letters to this particular station’s management urging restraint and professionalism in the airing of such ill advised and misinformed xenophobia. Such “viewpoints”, as I pointed out, would land management in court in places such as the UK and Canada and the USA where the claim of “free speech” would not come into play.
Barbadian consular or diplomatic missions in those countries monitoring programmes or publications in those countries which aired distaseful and inflammatory stereotyping of Barbadian-born people similar to what is being done here against Guyanese, particularly Indo-Guyanese, would be in contact with the authorities about it.
In keeping with your obligations to uphold Barbadian law, I am urging your good office to investigate this latest permitting by VOB management of the airing of the hateful and inflammatory statements about innocent and good Guyanese people who are doing so much, working in several fields and appreciated by the majority of decent minded, tolerant and hospitable Barbadian people, to make Barbados a better place for all of us.
Regrettably, moral persuasion sometimes fail and punitive measures are needed with some media house managements. Recalcitrant and miscreant elements whose idea of boosting the profit margin in their businesses is to permit such sensationalist, inflammatory hate-filled talk, sometimes encouraged by some talk show hosts themselves, have to be brought to heel. They need to feel, as the Bajan saying goes.
At this stage, the Consulate would be satisfied with a warning from the police to the management, the airing of an apology on the same programme, the wording of which to be approved by Consulate’s legal counsel, and a promise that no other hateful inflammatory rhetoric be permitted against Guyanese , and any other nationality, on the company’s stations in any shape, manner or form. Accept Sir, the assurances of my highest consideraton.
Respectfully Yours,
Norman Faria
(Guyana’s Honorary Consul in Barbados)

If the contents of that letter is not fascistic i don’t know what else can be. This is where all socialist usually end up,…dictating your words and thoughts with the threat of punishment if one does not comply. Is anyone surprise at where Guyana is today? It is the abundance of the kind of thinking that this Norman Faria person exhibits in his letter.
I am going to frown on behalf of the Darwin Dottin, while he commits that letter to file 13. Professional courtesy suggest that we should inform the sender that we are in receipt of his letter, after which no further correspondence from us to him will be forthcoming. There,….Mr. Dotting i have dealt with this nuisance letter for you while you move on to engage significantly more pressing matters than this could ever be.
……Pity we can’t treat to him as uh next nudder BLP hack and let loose the SSA board pun he tail. schuuupppssse. ;)
BTW, why are people still wasting their time calling VOB? ??????

As an independent observer, I would like to simply ask:
Is there available, *anywhere*, an independent transcript (or, better yet, a digital copy) of the Radio Frequency (RF) transmission in question?
Best regards to all.

The above letter and the many more like that above is the reason why VOB shuts up the callers who wish to speak about their concern about the behaviour of guyanese in Barbados.
David ellis and mike browne have taken a very cowardly anti-bajan approach where everthing bajan is scorned e.g. work ethic,or ellis claim that bajan believe they are superior to other caribbean nationals etc.
More and more people are turning away from that radio programme which has detiorated to an unbelievable low standard.
Norman faria sends these types of letters to senior government persons, radio stations, newspapers, police and if he could only find out who you are david – he would be harassing you too .
The idea is to so intimidate – those who want to be intimidated – that they will try to be overly cautious – and exclude even the most inoffensive comment – lest something that norman faria objects to might slip through.
That is where VOB call in show stands today.
It is an inoffensive piece of bland garbage.
Imagine if some africans from tanzania had gone to work in India and then were flooding India with tanzanians – and then when the citizens of India objected to what was happening in their country – you had the tanzanians crying foul – and putting pressure on the Indian government and police force to shut up the citizens of india.
Then when the citizens of India turn to the radio stations and newspapers to air their concerns they were again told to shut up and were barred from speaking out against the tanzanians and their behaviour.
Sadly david ellis has become a joke at that radio station and now mike ‘the hatchet man’ brown rules the roost.
What an excuse for a media house.
Only in barbados will we see the offender (the guyanese) dictating to the offended (the bajan) – or in other words the illegal minority have dominance and rebuking the legal majority.
Only bout here – but not for too long – one day coming soon – the people are already waking up.
David // July 6, 2008 at 9:34 PM
@Chris
You would have to make the request to VOB. We suspect that delivery would be at the discretion of management.
Adrian Hinds // July 6, 2008 at 9:46 PM
So David by your estimation was the email deliberatly sent to you by Faria?
ANON they are those who believe that the caribbean islands, wait uh mean the english speaking caribbean countries in addition to South and Central American countries Guyana and Belize t are one, and are willing to use Facism to make it so. :) your non acceptance of your Guyanese brothers and sisters will not be tolerated.
Time fuh we tuh start we own internet radio.
David // July 6, 2008 at 9:50 PM
@Adrian
Give the BU position and commenters we are still working on the motive behind Consul Faria sending us the letter. Perhaps the BU family can take a stab at it.
Adrian Hinds // July 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Could be a form of intended intimidaton. It is a cultural passtime for some to so do. It will not work, in fact i predict that contributions to all topics dealing with Illegal immigration in Barbados specifically those dealing with illegal Indo guyanese cheap labour, will intensify. Norman you may not have to look very hard to find something you don’t like.

BU maybe Norman Faria had really intended the letter to be sent to Guyana’s Commisioner of Police. We all know that, that country needs some serious help with race relations.

This is sooooooooo frightening you guys cannot begin to imagine…
I think there’s a need for a national consultation on the issue…let people come forward and vent their feelings and then go about some process of healing and reconciliation…this is not healthy…
Please calculate all the possible outcomes to this kind of rhetoric…
There are Barbadians all over the globe…so please think about possible reactions and a backlash that can hurt your friends, family and our country’s image…
This is like the perfect storm waiting to happen…
PLEASE STOP AND THINK….
Uh mean…high oil prices, a bad tourist season, possible economic recession, political victimization…people are going to look for scapegoats and target illegal immigrants…
This is very very very scary…
I wish it’d come to an end and that common sense will prevail…
This is so not healthy my people…
David // July 6, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Ian we have know for sometime that there is an undercurrent of feeling regarding our racial landscape. The many illegal immigrants coming into Barbados and the obvious number coming from Guyana has set this up. Please do not try to bring the guilt trip on the BU family. This has nothing to do with hating. We are more sensible than man!
We would want to ask Consul Faria what he has done to deal with the issue of undocumented Guyanese workers?
Secondly can he tell us how many Guyanese are in Barbados and roughly how many are estimated to be illegal.
Lastly we would want him to respond to the issue of forgeries of documentation which has duped the Barbados immigration for some time.
Lastly to Prime Minister Thompson when will the Immigration and the Police be given the green light to round up undocumented workers in Barbados.

Look wuh trouble Owen brought on this country. Uh man can’t open he mouth and speak on observations in he own country. Lest he be accuse of racial talk and label xenophobic. Anybody dat know bout hindu culture would know dat them people like to keep tuh themselves and does look down on everybody else like them is dogs and now Mr Farnia got de balls to tell we to shut in we own country.
Anytime I go to Guyana and had to walk thru a Hindu neighbourhood I does got to look over my shoulder twice cause dem people does stare at yuh like yuh from outer space and ready to approach yuh and bout hey dem walking freely, working and building temples in dem houses without government approval and Farnia issuing threats?
Mr Dottin Farnia got uh right to say he piece but he gone overboard. Ignore dat jackass. We need another consul general Thompson. Farnia days over.

What is so scary about people finally being able to speak out about their concerns Ian Walcott?
Under the Blp administration owen arthur told them to shut up and to leave the guyanese alone – so for right now they can finally speak their mind.
Right now all over the globe where there is an influx of immigrants who are creating a strain on the society – there are these same discussions taking place – England, france, america, south africa, caymans, bahamas and on and on.
The reason why it has reached this fever pitch is because discussion has been stifled in the past, and even now at VOB and the nation newspaper people are still feeling like they are not allowed to be heard.
I think bloggers are realising that it is not only technician, jay, scout, negroman,JC,yardbroom and others who are expressing concern – but almost daily new bloggers are popping up and recounting horror stories about guyanese or are expressing their frustration with the authorities for their inactivity.
I say it’s about time bajans show some spunk.
Keep on blogging people and expressing yourself and insisting that these illegal guyanese be sent home like yesterday, and that new rules be put in place that makes it very, very ,very difficult to get barbadian citizenship or permanent residence.
For those bajans who helping to hide out these illegals, and hiring them or renting properties to them – be afraid….. be very afraid.
The stuff is about to hit the fan in a way that we cannot ever believe it.
David thompson better start acting real fast, and don’t come up with no lotta long talk.

Since when does a guest in a host country dictate to the government or its agencies and businesses what to do? As honourary consul for Guyana, Faria should learn the rules of protocol. He should be roundly chastised by Foreign Affairs. Who de ‘ell he tink e is? In fact, we should do it here, cause I am sure nobody in authority will put that man in his place.
He, Faria, is going to turn more Bajans against dem guyanese. En I is one. Faria, you can pack up your backside and all your guyanese nationals and go back and build up and improve your own country. We bin doing well all along without any of ye. Yuh n doing we nuh favours.
Red Lake Lassie // July 6, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Why should Commissioner Dottin be concerned about some non-specific racial comments in the public forum?
When very specific racial derogatory comments and threats of rape, murder and arson were made against Adrian Loveridge in the public forum, the police didn’t bother. They didn’t even bother to give Mr. Loveridge the courtesy of a reply.
This was in a situation where the police were provided with the evidence needed to identify and arrest the person who made the threats.
What makes Mr. Faria believe that he will receive better treatment from the police than Adrian Loveridge?
Mea Culpa // July 6, 2008 at 11:24 PM
Are you aware what Owen Arthur has left for David Thompson to clean up? Many of these guyanese already havestatus so how can he pick them up? I heard David Thompson at his Press Conference with President Jagdeo and I compliment him for having the balls to say what he did in Jagdeo’s presence.
Heis obviously not a hypocrite and he issued his warning shots. Barbados will have a managed migration policy and I support that.
Do you realise the impact all of these Guyanene leaving Guyana will hve on that country? Think about that Ian.
Ian Walcott // July 6, 2008 at 11:32 PM
David, David, David…
People can speak to the issue of undocumented workers or illegal immigrants without targeting particular subsets…
There must be a rational approach to all this…
We need to assess our labor shortages in agriculture, construction, nursing, the said police force and other areas…
If some of this shortage is being filled by illegal migrants…then the issue must be rectified and there obviously will have to be some kind of amnesty…
But the road the debate is going down (as we say in Bajan)…is a very dangerous one…and everyone has to share the responsiblity for not inciting racial hatred and strife…
THINK HARD ABOUT IT…
One racially motivated attack or hate crime will send shock waves through the Internet via the online papers, blogs, emails, online radio etc…and this will do irreparable damage to the country’s reputation…
Can we afford this at this time…
I say, please let our values of respect and order take us through this challenge…
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thompson must have even more guts and not only do forensic audits at Hardwood Housing but also at the immigration department and at the elections dept where the I.D. cards are issued.
Remember some time last year when 2 persons from the elections department were charged with ID card fraud,as well as a guyanese person living in st thomas?
Whatever happened to that case?Owen probably got that thrown out.
Immigration officers, police and other civil servants must realise that for the 30 pieces of silver they get for selling a guyanese or anyone else a papport or IDD card – they are also down the road selling out the future of our children and our grandchildren.

How can this matter be explored with the thoroughness it deserves when the mainstream media has bottled it up? If the shit hits the fan blame the mainstream media. Without the blogs we are not sure this matter would be discussed.
Why don’t you call your contacts in the media and ask them why the silence? In fact why dont you call Mia and ask for her help?

BU
I don’t know if we have thought this through but let’s assume that there are thousands of illegal immigrants in B’dos. Now I don’t know how many there really are but the numbers would have to be really high to warrant the kind of anxiety being expressed. So, the Immigration Dept and the Police decide to “round up” these people and deport them. How will this be done? (just getting 100 Africans was difficult). Will we have joint Police /Army actions where an area is cordoned off and everyone with an accent or who looks Indian have to prove that they have their “papers” in order? What do we do with those that are found to be not in order? Lock them up and then put them on a plane to Guyana or where ever? What a scenario given the numbers! Maybe we will ask Barbadians to report suspected illegals to the Police. I have not even considered the factor of those with children born here or even those with foreign born children.
I am not suggesting that illegal immigrants should be encouraged but such issues bedevil most other countries especially when humane solutions are sought. Thompson has to be very careful on this issue and we should not inflame expectations and passions that may lead to actions that we will regret later.
Of course I do think all this is moot because other than a tightening of entry into B’dos by new immigrants, little else will be done.
Ian Walcott // July 6, 2008 at 11:52 PM
Oh lord now!
All I’m saying is that as a country…we have to calculate all the possible outcomes and possible consequences if this issue is not handled correctly…
But somewhere deep down inside…I’m sure that Barbadian pragmatism will prevail and this will not be blown out of proportion…
Maybe the mainstream media has calculated what irresponsible venting of the issue can do to a small vulnerable nation-state…
The issue obviously needs to be vented…like how we managed our race reconciliation issue a few years ago…we need to borrow that approach and use it to come up with the best possible solution for all parties…
Of course…the flip side to the whole argument is that we’re being a victim of our own success and attracting illegal immigrants…and a proper migration policy now therefore needs to be put in place…
The problem with these policies all over the globe (though they’re discriminatory by nature)is that they find very clever ways to exclude persons based on race and religion…
I never thought I’d live to see the day when Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations will be played out in Barbados…
I always thought we were a peaceful, neutral, loving people…

Well well well Stupid Norma Faria is at again.
VOB is his target. How ironic.A couple months ago VOB and his agent stupid Peter Wickham allowed the same Norma Faria the oppurtunity to insult, degrade and label Barbadians as xenophobic on his call in programme. Look how the tide has change.
I honestly believe that Norma Faria has come to the end of his tether in Barbados. If he is a Barbadian citizen his citizenship should be cancel immediately and he should be sent packing out of Barbados.Remember when Tom Adams revoked the work permit of the now prime minister of St Vincent Ralph Gonsalves in the late seventies or early eighties for criticising his goverment.
When will that fool Norma Faria recognise that he is in Barbados not Guyana and cannot dictate to us what we must say or not say on our airwaves.I am totally piss off with that idiot.
They are not special that we cannot criticise them and renounce the presence of too much of them in Barbados.
The likes of Norma Faria will ignite the ethnic cleansing that is about to take place in Barbados.
Prime Minister David Thompson if you do not want the image and reputation of Barbados to be tarnish do something with that clown Norma Faria and act decisively with this matter of illegal indo-guyanese immigration.

CONSIDERATION OF REPORTS SUBMITTED BY STATES PARTIES
UNDER ARTICLE 9 OF THE CONVENTION
Concluding observations of the Committee on the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination
BARBADOS
1. The Committee considered the eighth to sixteenth periodic reports of Barbados, submitted in one document (CERD/C/452/Add.5), at its 1709th and 1710th meetings (CERD/C/SR.1709 and CERD/C/SR.1710), held on 5 and 8 August 2005. At its 1727th meeting (CERD/C/SR.1727), held on 18 August 2005, it adopted the following concluding observations.
A. Introduction
2. The Committee welcomes the report submitted by the State party which fully complies with the reporting guidelines and expresses its satisfaction that dialogue has been re established with the State party. It also welcomes the supplementary information provided by the State party in writing as well as in its oral presentation. The report and the presentation enabled the Committee to engage in a rich discussion with the State party of the social and historical context of racial issues in Barbados.
3. Noting that the report was more than 12 years overdue when submitted, the Committee invites the State party to respect the timetable it has suggested for the submission of its future reports.
B. Positive aspects
4. The Committee notes with satisfaction the establishment of the Committee for National Reconciliation tasked with developing, coordinating and implementing a programme for the process of national reconciliation.
5. The Committee appreciates the relevant statistical information on the composition of the population provided by the State party. The Committee welcomes the draft National Plan on Justice, Peace and Security as an important step in providing victims of violent crime with the right to claim compensation.
6. The Committee welcomes the draft National Plan on Justice, Peace and Security as an important step in providing victims of violent crime with the right to claim compensation.
7. The Committee welcomes the organization of several training programmes conducted at the Regional Police Training Department on the promotion and protection of human rights in the field of racial discrimination.
8. The Committee also notes with satisfaction the pilot education programme which has included African Heritage Studies, Citizenry, Family life and conversational foreign languages in several primary and secondary schools.
9. The Committee notes with satisfaction the country’s high ranking in the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report.
C. Concerns and recommendations
10. While welcoming the recommendation of the Constitutional Review Commission that gender be included in the Constitution as a ground for non discrimination and the establishment of a Constitution Committee which has begun redrafting the Constitution with the intention of, inter alia, including a definition of racial discrimination which would protect individuals against discriminatory actions by private persons and entities, the Committee is concerned about the lack of a legal definition of racial discrimination in line with article 1 of the Convention in its domestic legislation.
The Committee recommends to the State party that it adopt a definition of racial discrimination that includes the elements contained in article 1 of the Convention.
11. While taking note of the establishment of the office of Ombudsman, the Committee regrets the absence of a national human rights institution set up in accordance with the Principles relating to the status of national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights (the Paris Principles, General Assembly resolution 48/134, annex).
The Committee recommends that the State party consider the establishment of a national human rights institution, in accordance with the Paris Principles.
12. The Committee is concerned over the lack of social movements that promote integrationist multiracial values in the State party and in particular that the report was not made more widely available to civil society before it was submitted.
In the light of article 2 (e) of the Convention, the Committee requests that the State party create an enabling environment for integrationist multiracial organizations, and encourages the State party to maintain dialogue with civil society organizations.
13. The Committee expresses concern at the “invisible crypto racism” mentioned in the report which arises as a result of the separation of black and white communities and which is rooted in social relations at the interpersonal level.
The Committee reminds the State party of its general recommendation XIX according to which de facto racial segregation can arise without any initiative or direct involvement by the public authorities. The Committee thus encourages the State party to monitor all trends which can give rise to such segregation, to work for the eradication of any negative consequences that ensue and to describe any such action in its next periodic report.
14. The Committee notes with concern that, due to its general character, paragraph 1 of the reservation by the State party affects the application of a number of provisions of the Convention, in particular articles 2, 4, 5 and 6. Furthermore, paragraph 2 of the reservation restricts the interpretation of a key provision for the effective application of the Convention, namely article 4.
The Committee recommends that the State party consider withdrawing its reservation and enact legislation to give full effect to article 4 of the Convention, as well as to provide for effective remedies according to article 6.
15. The Committee is concerned at the absence of any complaints of racial discrimination before the High Court since 1994 and at the fact that no complaint was ever submitted before the Police Complaints Authority.
The Committee recommends that the State party consider whether the lack of formal complaints may be the result of the victims’ lack of awareness of their rights, lack of confidence in the police and judicial authorities, or the authorities’ lack of attention, sensitivity, or commitment to cases of racial discrimination. The Committee requests that the State party include in its next periodic report statistical information on complaints lodged, prosecutions initiated and the outcome of cases involving racial or ethnic discrimination, as well as specific examples of such cases.
16. While taking note of the State party’s observation that education in Barbados is “socially guaranteed”, the Committee expresses concern that the right to education as well as other economic and social rights are not adequately protected in domestic law.
The Committee recommends to the State party that it ensure equal enjoyment of economic and social rights including the right to education contained in article 5 (e) of the Convention.
17. The Committee expresses concern at the closure of the Centre for Multiethnic Studies at the Barbados campus of the University of the West Indies which was tasked to research race and ethnicity in the Caribbean.
The Committee encourages the State party to consider reopening the Centre.
18. The Committee requests the State party to further clarify the situation regarding Amerindians in Barbados.
19. The Committee notes that the State party has not made the optional declaration provided for in article 14 of the Convention and urges the State party to consider doing so.
20. The Committee recommends that the State party continue taking into account the relevant parts of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action when implementing the Convention in the domestic legal order, in particular in respect of articles 2 to 7 of the Convention, and that it include in its next periodic report information on further action plans or other measures taken to implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action at the national level.
21. The Committee strongly recommends that the State party ratify the amendments to article 8, paragraph 6, of the Convention, adopted on 15 January 1992 at the Fourteenth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention and endorsed by the General Assembly in its resolution 47/111. In this connection, the Committee refers to General Assembly resolution 59/176 of 20 December 2004, in which the Assembly strongly urged States parties to accelerate their domestic ratification procedures with regard to the amendment and to notify the Secretary General expeditiously in writing of their agreement to the amendment.
22. The Committee strongly recommends that the State party ratify the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families and the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
23. The Committee recommends that the State party’s reports be made readily available to the public from the time they are submitted and that the observations of the Committee on these reports be similarly publicized. It further suggests introducing effective measures, including public awareness raising campaigns about the Convention.
24. Negroman you would make a skinhead proud! The next time some skinheads or Ku Klux Klan members hold a rally asking for all the ‘niggers’ to be sent back to Afrika and saying things like Europe or America are white peoples’ country, you should be feeling warm all over.
Why not cancel Peter Wickham’s citizenship while you are at it and Owen Arthur’s.
Ethnic cleansing what the hell? If any Indians are targeted and harmed in this country, Barbados would be so crushed economically that a category 9 hurricane would be better welcomed. We could as well as kiss our cricket goodbye (who do think controls the ICC … Zimbabwe?), or the tourist industry and offshore finance sector (who do think are heading a lot of the major global finance houses ?) and we would become pariahs overnight in the Commonwealth and the UN.

Xenophobia built upon sheer ignorance! Do we realise that in following ‘global’ patterns of exclusion we are also following the trend of keeping out people based on race, ethnicity, and the fact that they are from ‘developing countries’? Yes, the issues need to be vented, but we have to quickly dispel the narratives of hatred, bigotry, and XENOPHOBIA.

These are some insights I have gathered in my study of the Barbados situation in relation to the immigration issues:
1. There are thousands of people without status working “illegally” in Barbados. They include Europeans, Canadians and US residents working in finance, hotels and commerce. They keep a low profile… and many work from home.
2. My estimate is that there are about 25,000 non-status persons living in Barbados: Guyana about 10,000, Other Caribbean about 10,000, and Others 5,000 (whites, Indians from India and Pakistan).
3. Many of these non-status persons, especially the whites, get long extensions as “visitors” , own property and work in Barbados. They fly in and out to renew the process so that they do not overstay They are the “investors” we Barbadians dearly love… but many are only people working underground, or pretending to be long-stay visitors.
4. The farcical work permit system is corrupt. There are so many ways to get around the rules to get work permits – check the hotel and restaurants and see how they do it. One should not ignore the graft and corruption issues as well – as they do exist here, like everywhere else.
5. Indians, especially from India and Pakistan, have been in Barbados for years. They have their own “circles” .. and have amassed wealth. They own most of Swan Street and many businesses and have been quietly buying up land and properties.
6. The influx of Guyanese Indian immigration is relatively new and has created greater alarm than the Afro-Guyanese who have had familial links with Guyana since the days of slavery. This immigration is fostered by “CSME promises” of integrated Caribbean market and economy. … an integration process that has been postponed based on recent reports from the last Caricom meetings..
7. It seems like the Guyana’s government fosters emigration. They never seem to seriously address the reasons why people are leaving in such large numbers. Maybe it lessens the economic tension it brings in foreign remittances to keep their economy afloat. Every country, including Barbados, has emigration as people look for better opportunities. Guyana’s is a one way outflow that has continued for decades. Until President Jagdeo seriously addresses Guyana’s economic issues, there will be this problem of “economic refugees”.
8. The blatant racism I found in Guyana against African-Guyanese, makes it difficult for them to make a living there. Almost the whole economy is controlled by Indians. The only realistic solution for many is emigration – many permanently. Many Indians also opt for that also – to the USA, Canada and Caribbean countries. However a number of Guyanese Indians in Barbados seem to be more interested in amassing money to send home to improve their economic status in Guyana… as they intend to return. Many African Guyanese I have talked to have also said they would return to Guyana if the economic and racial issues there were addressed…. and the marginalization of African Guyanese, by the Indian majority…. stopped.
9. It is understandable that Barbadians of African descent are concerned about unrestricted immigration and a situation where no one seems to be addressing their fears. The last government was obviously not addressing the issues. The DLP is talking about “Managed Immigration” (whatever that means). In any case I can see that something has to be done that is concrete and understandable by Barbadians. There will be hard economic times ahead worldwide and in those times we know that immigration issues become more important… jobs!
10. Finally, many Guyanese are here legally. Many have had firm roots in Guyana through familial relationships established decades ago. Many “famous” Barbadians and Guyanese have common roots … but these persons were mainly white or mixed or of African heritage. The “problem” some people have is the Indian immigration according to what I read in this blog. People do not want the problems they see in Guyana or Fiji where previously majority populations were swamped by immigrant indentured labour from India. They also do not like what is happening to African Guyanese in Guyana… and want to know what this richly endowed country is being controlled for the benefit of a few, while they export their problems.
Fix Guyana’s problems and make it a place where Guyanese will remain and build. A place where Caribbean people would want to go and settle in and many of the seeming “problems” we have with Guyanese immigration in this region would no longer be an issue. Many Guyanese would return home if the economy develops and security and sanity returns.
Remember 6ttaht in this region, British Guiana was the pride of the British Empire before 1950. It was given the most advanced Constitution in 1953. Also that many older Barbadians will tell you about Demerara and the garden city of Georgetown in those days in glory and. Guyana can return, and regain its self-respect, but it needs enlightened and and non-racial leadership and governance.

Some people seem to live with their heads in the sky quoting reports and telling us about talking and getting it off our chest and then start the healing,as if that solves the problem.
THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM IS IN FIRST DEPORTING THE ILLEGALS – ALL OF THEM.
I believe that all passports/citizenship and permanent residences,as well as ID cards given over the last 15 years must be examined and revoked if found to be done under corrupt means – if it means setting up a special committe to do so – so be it.
These so called harmless indians that you see walking around today – will display their racial fangs – as soon as they have reached sufficient numbers or have amassed enough money to give them leverage,or they infiltrate the society in certain key places.
The BLP was the main encourager of this illegal indian invasion – hence there should be no surprise by anyone of ‘george the blp stalwart’s comment about xenpphobia – after all he is only repeating their mantra.
The BLP should never be allowed to govern in this country again – untill this blp lot and their thinking are cleansed from the party – if you think it is only the old ones like billie miller, owen,o’brien trotman, david simmons and others – then read what that windbag dale marshall had to say in the last parliamentary debates.
Bunch of tiefs and homos.
Look carefully and you will see that homosexuals generally object to any discussion of enforcing certain strict policies – because they believe because their lifestyle is not accepted and they feel they are discriminated against – that any sort of enforcement against any minority groups – whether that minority group is right or wrong – well then that is a human rights issue – never mind that these groups behaviour might be destructive.
Hisory is there for us to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Sadly but true there will be social unrest in barbados in time to come because racism has accompanied these indians whether fron india or guyana – watch for it.
Kenya, trinidad, guyana, surinam, fiji and other countries have had them living together in the society for decades and yet their racial problems get worse and worse – because whether those so called bleeding hearts want to accept it or not – they really, really despise blacks – and feel because they have straight hair like whites – that they re closer to whites and that blacks are inferior to them.
Strange while whites will use them and pit the 2 racial groups agianst each other – they generally do not like indians.
Indians have made no great contribution to our island – but have grown rich at our expense.
They have come in importing cheap rubbish and then exporting back their profits to india or wherever.Barbados have prospered to where it is without this recent invasion of guyanese indian workers who are are quite often schemers – posing as carpenters and masons and they don’t have a clue about the trade.
Those from guyana are already displaying their racist tendencies at workplaces,ie construction site, agricultural estates, bridgetown stores etc where when they can they refuse to work together with bajan blacks prefering to keep to themselves and only hire another indian and also refuse to mix with the bajan workers at break times.
Only when you see an indian wants something from a black then you will see them making nice with the black – and they will tell you all sorts of lies – like how they have close black friends, and they are not racial, and back in guyana or trinidad or wherever how they mix with everyone – if checked out you will find this is usually a lie – done to disarm the black and to worm their way into the balck’s life to get whatever it is they want; a piece of land,a bajan passport, a business contract – whatever.
Thye will ususally start bring things for you too and talking sweet, sweet – watch out for the gifts of food,or if you have a position watch for money or other bribes – if you are a low life black bajan man – they will send their indian sister, daughter and I have even known of cases where they actually send their wives to give sexual favours in exchange for what they want.
This is why these people can be suicide bonmbers – nothing, not even their life is sacrosant – everything has a price – a a means to an end.
Their ultimate goal to get rich and to dominate – whether in india it is those black skinned indians of the lower caste – ‘the untoucaable’ or in countries where they have migrated to those citizens of african descent.
I SAY AGAIN GET THEM TO HELL OUT OF BARBADOS – AND DO SO NOW.
Either way you look at it – those growing number of indians are going to a big, big, big problem very soon from now.

I do think that VOB has to be careful because sometimes the statments made are quite inflammatory and dehumanizing. When I look out at Barbados on a daily basis I see alot of mixed race people …’douglas’ who are BAJAN soour society is already mixed.
I think that the issue shoiuld be framed without the racial stuff. The focus should be the immigration status. Better control of illegal immigration is needed.
We afro bajans should look inward and work on our culture/values so that the LEGAL immigrants are assimilated and add to our develpoing melting pot instead of subtracting from it…
But there is definitely no need for the racist rhetoric…

It is now clear that Mr Faria is about to cause trouble for this country. This is the typical method of indo -guyanese. They come in their niumbers settle in, then start their unrest while behaving as though they are the victims. Faria has realise that they are on the back foot, we must not stop now, not if we are interested in saving this country from these guyanese. For our offspring’s future, let us reclaim this country for them. I personally is not against the ones who are here legally already, the damage has already begun, but I call on the authorities to deport ALL illegal persons out of this country. We’re getting overweighted and this country is going to sink , morally, economically, financially and many other llys. Please take a stand before this problem gets out of hand. Beware this is the start of thee NASTY tactics that these people use.

This must stop especially at a time like this when the world is facing a major recession. We can’t afford to like after our own and all these opportunists, nor can we allow them to rob us of being our neighbour’s keepers. They are parasites, a cancer eating away at our culture. What is the racist rhetoric – ‘me’- is referring to.
Bajans are saying that they have looked at other countries where indians from the asian sub continent migrated to – and after over a 100 years (see Fiji,Guyana,Trinidad,Kenya,UK) these indian descendants have not fully integrated with the black majority population or in the case of the UK – with neither the white majority nor the black minority population.
Ian walcott and Me – who appears from their pro blp postings to be sympathetic to the blp party – and others like george -blp supporter – all have one line of argument – please don’t talk about the effects of the indo immigrants on other ethnic populations – because that is racist.
So why can’t we just ‘manage migration’ – whatever that is supposed to mean – the we can hold hands and sing ‘kumbaya’.
Oh yea?
While we trying to all get along, these indian immigrants are all strategising to position themselves to have major influence in this country – whether up front or behind the scenes.
Think on that my friend – if it matters to you at all.
With regards to VOB – they are not interested in filtering discussion – they are interested in shutting it down plain and simple – callers seemed not able to say the words – illegal guyanese before they are cut off.
This is why most bloggers say they have stopped listening to the call in shows.
Bajans can’t even have freedom of expression in their own country – fuh real.

The BU household hopes to clarify a couple things coming out of previous comments. People reading the BU blog should ascribe views expressed to the BU household. Comments are the views of commenters, simple!
It is no secret that we have scorned the open door immigration policy of the previous government. While the new government has made some statements and made promises regarding the issue the jury is still out.
While the BU household does not promote Jingoism we can understand how this emotive issue because of mismanagement is snowballing and giving cause to extreme commentary. We will do our best to manage the comments but we hope commenters will cooperate by leaving out the hate rhetoric, it is simple not required!
We do hate when we have to place the blog on moderation.

Good point JC,very good point.
This is why a very thorough investigation must be done into the issuing of passports,ID cards and permanent residence status over the past 15 years(not hard to do,all it requires is the will to want to do it) – and where it is found that there has been fraud – then these decisions and documents MUST BE REVOKED.
There can be no token gestures or measures by this government.

I mentioned the fact that they are increasing numbers of mixed race indo -blceak here such as Suckoo Byer… what are we saying to/about them???
generalisations about indians to an extreme degree does niot good , it reduces them to an idea that jsut leads to more strife and victimisation.
Granted the culture of the guyanese is not exactly like ours but are they not humans trying to make a way in the world just like us????
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY the indians ( including the children of these recent immigrants who only know Babados as home) who are Bajan are they less bajan than us???
THis is clearly an immigration problem. Period.
I know that money sometimes will exchange hands in terms of granting work permits but is that an Indian to indian thing????////

How will “West Indian” integration and unity ever be achieved unless there is freedom of movement between the participating countries?
If Bajans do not want other ethnicities coming here, living here, working here … we should declare it.
In any case, so long as us black people control Governments nothing will ever get done… except talk and looking to look good whenever there is a photo opportunity.

If you start moderating persons very passionate comments – you will – WITHOUT REALISING IT – be doing exactly what Norman Faria’s letter intends you to do.
Negroman and others are expressing a strong and hitherto unheard of bold declaration of pride in their blackness and their desire to preserve the gains their foreparents made – for their children and grandchildren.
More importantly they have travelled to guyana and other countries where large indo poulation reside and they have seen up front the indian population’s treatment of persons of african descent – hence their fear for the future of barbados as these very persons flood our country.
Norman faria’s letter’s intention is for you to be overly sensitive,be politically correct, modify the debate until it becomes as bland as the VOB call- ins.
BFP has already gone there and you are the only outlet bajans have left – there must be wide and free expressions on this topic – because believe me Norman Faria has already realised the key to shutting down discussion on this topic – ie -claim Incitement .
He has already successfully used it with the other media houses and he is now trying it out on you.
The objective is 2 fold – i) to either intimidate you into silence ,or;
2) Make you so careful and want to be so politically correct – that you start censoring every comment.
The end result is the same – free discussion is stifled and if allowed – is done through very narrow, restricted channels.
Have no fear he is setting his guns on Government too – watch and see he will use the same arguments against them and will be writing letters to all sort of people.
Anytime government allow bajans to discuss openly and freely in townhall meetings the guyanese issue – whether the racial effect or economic effect – watch for the same tactic by norman faria.
As others have already said – only in cowardly barbados could he be allowed to be so bold.
Only bout here.

In a previous blog under another the thread – Barbados Government To Implement A Tighter Immigration Policy – on BU, at about 7.30 pm, on June 30, 2008 , we stated: ” While we in PDC certainly do not hate non-racist Indo-Guyanese, we are still as strong as ever in our categoric position that if were we at the helm of the government of the country today since January 15, ALL of these Indo-Guyanese and Indians of other national origins who would have come to our shores within the last 10 years would by now have been ASKED TO LEAVE this country or be FORCIBLY REPATRIATED out of this country to Guyana or to wheresoever else they would have come from, whether or NOT within this time they would have been married to Barbadians, would have got children here from Barbadians or Non-Barbadians, or would have had property here, whatever”.
We further stated that in the same blog that ” such actions would have, of course, been consistent with such a government putting a national immigration and strategic development policy regime that would have been ideally suited to the peaceful and harmonious growth and development of our country, and that would have been crafted in recognition of the very crucial need to protect the national strategic interests of this country. Where black Guyanese and other black nationals are concerned, if were we at the helm of government today, such a policy regime would have been crafted to get more and more productive and well behaved Blacks into the country from overseas, primarily as a means of making sure that they contribute properly to Barbados becoming a well balanced, world class society achieving average real annual material and production growth rates of 8 – 10 %”.

If his dear BLP was in power he would have praised their approach which is what has has led to this damn problem in our society. But Faria was once part of the Commissiong, Boby Clarke, Prescod, Denny, Ian Marshall cabal so we have to be soft! Ideology above nation! Typical…
Now he says we have to be careful. When the Europeans were overcoming Africa, some clown or rather ****** was probaby saying the same thing Ian is saying here!
The Prime Minister has said there will be a White Paper on Immigration and has established a Cabinet Sub-Committee to look at the issues. These are welcome words because prior to that it was a free for all under Mia as Minister of Home Affairs.
I read in T&T newspaper, that the PM himself met with al senior immigration officers prior to going to CARICOM to get an understanding of the challenges they were facing. Now that is the kind of leadership I like. I’m sorry guys, you might not like it, but I have to say it.
He is the first Minister of Immigration since 1972 to meet with senior Immigration Officers my buddy tells me.
Our PM’s coments in President Jagdeo’s presence and to the regional media are very strategic and important. They show a level of directness and openness which ae refreshing.
Good work, PM.

So, the above is something that Mr. Norman Faria and others in Barbados must get to know – if they have NOT known as yet. Too, what he and they must also get to know – again, if they have NOT known as yet, is that this is our unmitigated unshakeable position in regard of making sure that the future, long term general peace, harmony, growth and development is maintained as much as possible in this country, as that, those above reproduced statements fall within the most important objectives that we in PDC have been consistently outlining for achievement for our dear country.
Moreover, the members of PDC certainly love our country, and we WILL NOT SIT or STAND idly by and allow our country to AT ANY TIME IN THE FUTURE be degradated and destabilized under whatever pretexts and guises by those who obviously DO NOT and WILL NOT have the fundamental interests of this country at heart. CERTAINLY, WE WILL NOT, MR. FARIA!!
Finally, we want to tell Mr.Faria – as if he has ALL this political clout – which is really far far from being the case – that NO amount of idiocy from him at this stage WILL make the great multitudes of us – within and without PDC – divert from our quest to make Barbados a brighter and better place for esp. those of the masses and middle classes of people of Barbados that have come to learn, come to know/experience that their forbears were enslaved or worked so hard over the years to make this country what it is today. NOT AT ALL, MR. FARIA!! JOKE!! TAKE YOUR PLACE!!

I was watching a travel program a while back about India, and the traveler read some of the ads placed in a Bombay, which the Indians now call Mumbai. All of the ads wanted light skin persons, for example, educated man seeks light skinned educated woman for marriage, if you don’t meet qualifications please do not contact,. Edcuated man seeks light skinned girl for light housekeeping, and so on. I noticed here that you all left out the one country where the East Indians are totally in control of every aspect of life, and this place happens to be an island off the coast of Africa, Mauritius. Mauritius East Indians are 60% of the populations and the native Africans 30%, there is no way an Afro-Mauritian can ever become Prime Minister, and somebody told me recently that the African population lives in utter squalor on the outskirts of Port Louis the capital. Mauritius in every respect is a Little India near Africa. I think the ultimate goal is the same in Guyana, and Suriname, create a majority Indian state, Fiji a totally different story. Anyway, you should look at Mauritius since you are an island and so is Mauritius and it appears you could be heading in their direction.

What David is trying to do is exactly what Faria intended. Reversed psychology, accuse us of racism, while they practise racism in a subtle way by pretending to be the victims. This method they have used repeatedly, yet others and now ourselves are falling for the same trick. You got to know these indo-guyanese, they would smile with you while negotiating your demise. I know you would say some bajans are like that too, true but should we allow a worse practise of this to grow in our country? Who’s doing most of the kidnapping and murders in T&T and Guyana? An indo- guyanese has no conscience, he/she would do ANYTHING to get their way. I know what I’m talking about and I’m beginning to see it manifested in Barbados. In their numbers, if they can’t get their way they would be willing to cause turmoil in this country to bring it to the level of theirs. All they have to do is to start an upheaval in this country, tourist stop coming and recession on, we have no natural resources to fall back on to and we can repidly become worse than guyana. What will happen then is the guyanese would return home and declare war against us . BEWARE

Bajans have proved beyond a shadow of doubt they are among thriftiest, hard working law abiding people on planet earth. Compare us with any nation and any fool can see that. Yet still Centipede and his kind call us lazy. We are rightly concerned about illegals from Guyana and elsewhere but our long standing home grown race issue remains unsolved.
The scout // July 7, 2008 at 10:24 AM
The problem is bajans are not as proud of their country as they should and other people see this, that’s why they are using some of our own people to get around the system by giving them bribes. We have a lot of Judases in this country at all levels. They need to be identified and brought to justice. If BU or anyother try to muzzle us this problem will escalate; we would have to hit the streets and this can cause negative international reporting which can be bad for our economy. I’m BEGGING the gov’t and it’s leaders to address this problem with urgentcy before it gets out of hand. Faria and creww is fanning the fire

Did bajans really read Faria’s letter. These are THREATS!
Well well, well, I remember my friend telling me he was on a bus and an Indo Guyanese had his legs spread all over the bus and refused to let a child sit dow properly on the bus. Why dont Mr. Faria tell these people to respect their guests.
If it was my child hmmmmmm …… that is how noise starts. Victimisation insults etc. they have started let them try it with me. Just let them try!
Heaven // July 7, 2008 at 12:04 PM
I don’t know where you got those figures of 10,000 Guyanese but there was document at a St George DLp constituency office recently which showed figures of 45,oo0 illegal Gutanes in Barbados.Maybe that’s why so many staff have been transferred from the immigration department in Bridgetown.
Faria thinks that Barbados is a region in Guyana and anyone should be allowed to come here and behave as they like.
I am glad that others know there are many ,many illegal Europeans, Canadians, Africans etc living and working here.Under the BLP it was a free for all.Hopefully the Dems can clean up the mess.
Pat // July 7, 2008 at 12:20 PM
I have personal dealings with Indians and I do not trust them one bit. They smile and I smile. They are always trying to poke your eyes out while pretending to be your friend. I think it is part of their culture to be devious and cunning. They love nothing more than MONEY and POWER. These mean more to them than their own children.
When I was at uni in the 70’s I befriended an Indo-Guyanese. We became thick. She admitted to me that her father kept all his money in England. This after she had borrowed some funds to pay some fees that were due. She had to wait for her dad to transfer the money from England to Canada. This after he and his family had lived in Guyana for generations.
Then the world blamed Idi Amin for expelling them. He bacame wise to the fact that they were parasites, sucking the country dry and putting their money in British banks. No one can explain how these so-called penniless refugees from Uganda, came to the West today and next day opened business and bought big houses before they even did a days work. Nothing has changed. That is the pattern they follow whereever they go. My Indian girlfriend even admits tothis. She said others bury it under the house because they do not want to pay any taxes on it. This is the way it is done in India (they call it black money) and they do it where ever they go. Foreign offshore banks, a safe in the house, under the floor boards or in gold and diamonds.
I think Bajans should become smart. I think my Indian friends are my freinds because I am better off financially than they are. Not because they have any genuine fondness for me. My girlfriend makes a point to tell every one that I live in an identical house to hers. She is married and I, of course, am single. Knowing their culture, if they could afford it, they would have bought a larger house.
So, if you want, you can listen to Faria and toe the line. If you love Barbados, as I am sure most of you do, continue to air your views.
Last year I went into an indian run grocery store in town to get some juice. First time I went in, I looked around checking the items on the shelf. It dawned on me that this Indian man was following me. So I confronted him. I asked why he was following me around that I am not going to steal anything. He does not know me. I am visiting for World Cup, the man went into this long rant about people walking in and putting things in their pockets, etc. I did not even have a purse on me, just my wallet. I looked at him and told him, there is nothing in his store I need and certainly nothing worth stealing and walked out.

Adrian Hinds // July 7, 2008 at 1:05 PM
These personal experiences and stories are in material, we can do without them, and stick to the facts of immigration in the Caribbean relative to economies, market /living space, the law, crime and cultural practices.
…..We will continue to look at the continued flight of Guyanese from Guyana to the world as indicative of some serious dysfunction in that country. We cannot ignore the sourse of this dysfunction which is the Guyanese people, and as immigrants do not put away their cultural practices on entering a foreign society, it is very much in our interest to monitor and be prepared to take steps to deal with this. Barbados cannot be the destination of the second mass emigration exodus from Guyana, if indeed the first has occured or has been completed.

Those who have failed to learn the lessons of history; will repeatedly put their people in peril.
We are expected to connive with others to shut up our citizens. These residents to whom we have given temporary shelter within our bosom. Now tell our own children be quiet! go in the yard and play.
They talk of the Law, the same law the illegal immigrants break with disdain.
The impudence of this person is laughable were the situation not so serious.
In this man’s misguided efforts to defend the indefensible he has stirred the ire of Barbadians… a peaceable people, until stirred.
Some of these illigal immigrants are determined to spread their king of lawlessness and deceit, in whatever part of the globe they decamp.

Having read most of the comments concerning this immigration mess,I think it is safe to say there is starting to be a consensus that Government has failed us.I will admit the BLP has made strides in advancing the economy to some degree BUT have not devised a system of rules that keep it in check, hence Barbados is having the problems. Here in the U.S.,The mantra “It is the economy, stupid !” fits perfectly since most illegal immigrants are so called “economic migrants or economic refugees” in Barbados, but the fact is they are just ILLEGAL immigrants, plain & simple.
I think someone mentioned that in the 1990’s the BLP gave an immigration amnesty already & I believe this is another reason why the illegal immigration population is so high in Bim,they are basically waiting it out until either the BLP gets in power again or the DLP gives up & capitulates in the name of “regional integration” so that another Immigration amnesty or regularization program can begin.
On the topic of the letter,Barbados albeit being a member of Caricom & being a very small country is also first & foremost a Sovereign nation. The idea that a foreign dignitary whom is a guest on our soil can at a moments notice write a so called” letter” to silence our Nationals on such an important topic makes me wonder, does anyone else not see the hypocrisy in this ?
Butterfly, you’re absolutely correct in your assessment. The Cayman islands or even Bermuda would be a good immigration model to follow since these islands have some of the tightest immigration policies of ANY Caribbean island & their economies are also doing quite well fiscally.
Anyway the bottom-line to fixing this immigration mess is simple.
-No Amnesty or Regularization program:This seems to only increase the next illegal immigration wave.
-Deny Birthright citizenship: Birthright Citizenship in Barbados should be switched to a Jus Sanguis model in which at least one person’s Parents must be a Citizen or Permanent resident of Barbados in order to confer Barbados citizenship.Currently the islands of Bermuda & the Cayman islands have such a model. There would be NO Stateless children as they would have the Citizenship of their Parents’ country.
-Digitally Centralize Immigration records:I believe the current immigration department relies on paper to get everything done which as you know can be easily altered.Digital records are not so easy as they can be encrypted so only a few can have access such as the Chief immigration officer or Minister, preventing fraud or tampering.
-CSME Migrants should be fingerprinted on entry:I think CSME is still a good idea but the current safeguards are ridiculous with only a Biometric CARIPASS to showcase as an identity for 1 individual.Fingerprints can be used as another form of authentication.
-Free Movement restrictions:Only a limited number of CSME migrants can be allowed at any one time from a particular Caricom country & they must ALL be skilled by showcasing a tertiary education certificate as proof. If a Caricom national abuses the program they are barred from using the program again depending on the offense. If there is an influx of CSME migrants from any one Nation whose nationals do not return when their time is up that particular Caricom nation forfeits their right to use the program in the nation that has the influx,or at the very least until their is measurable progress on the influx problem

For those of us – Bajans – who as small boys or girls have seen our fathers and grandfathers. Backs bent late in the evening trudging their way home from cane fields. Shoes made from old rubber tyres, strapped to caloused feet.
Women in distant fields heavy baskets upon their heads and no shelter from the driving rain. Women walking home from the Pine, Blue Waters – then – and other such places, late at night after 12 hours of domestic service.
Men in heat as that of a furnace, in sugar cane factories, toiling with beads of sweat forming ripples on tired bodies, later absorbed by torn clothing.
Old and young men in stone quarries from the break of day dressed in little more than rags. Iron drills and wedges in bruised hands.
To you my friends it is those people who made Barbados what it is…they were the seed corn. Yes, blood, sweat and tears and in equal measure all three were expended.

Bloggers we are in real trouble.
More news were revealed that parliamentarians on both sides are facilitating the easy access of Barbadian citizenship to indians from India,Pakistan & Guyana.Information was given that on many occassions senior and other immigration officers are having lunch with big Guyanaese businessmen and accepting pay outs for the issue of work permits and citizenship . The British brought them to Guyana, and as ME said they don’t care about Guyana, Barbados, Suriname, for they are just out to make a quick dollar. They send remittance back to Guyana, but it is done the back track way. The rich Guyanese all have overseas bank accounts and agents who work for them, and there are some mighty rich Indians who were born in Guyana. They take the remittances from the overseas ones, and bank it in foreign banks, then have thier agents in Guyana give the person the remittance in Guyanese dollars, with a few extra dollars. You see how the money never gets to Guyana, for if that sort of thing was not going on Guyana would have well over one billion US in remittances. It is all well and good that you come here and rant about the Indo Guyanese, however, what action do you plan to take. You talk and talk, but no one has come up with a grassroots plan to curb the Indianisation of Barbados. Are you going to sit there and just think that the BLP or the DLP will do something about it. I rather doubt it, for it does not matter which party rules the country, their hands are tied because of the Caricom ties, Indo Guyanese ties whatever you want to call it. I am glad PM Thompson spoke out in front of Guyana’s Jagdeo, that was a great show, but you the people need to start doing something to stop this isidious immigration wave from Guyana that is eroding your way of life. You can start by boycotting their stores, Negroman said a Pakistani came peniless, sold mangoes, and now he is a millionarire, there you go, you all bought his mangoes, so start with a boycott of their stores, restaurants, and so on. Look if Sister Rosa Parks in America did not refuse a white man her seat on the bus we would still be standing in a crowded bus or sitting in the back, and the subsequent boycott of the Montgomery bus boycott brought the system down. I read some where you all thinkin of running Byer Suckhoo as the PM candidate against Mia Mottley, go along with that, and for sure you will have Barbadostan for sure. Byer Suckhoo is you all worse nigthmare, oh don’t be fooled with this nonsense she has children or so sweet, smiling face tell lies, y’all. well enough said.

Shining Light, I am quite sure citizens of Barbados are able to differentiate between the Chinee and Indian tourist who may be a citizen of England or the USA as opposed to some Indo Guyanese who is there to seek his fortune. I don’t think people are advocating goodbye to tourism, but want government to put in place an immigration policyi to prevent the eradication of the Bajan lifestyle as it is known today. If immigration is not checked now, within 25 years the face of Barbados will be changed forever. You are the majority there, and as such there should be no bargaining with the likes of the Guyanese government, or the so called honourary counsel general of the Republic of Guyana, in fact he should be deported back to Guyana for interfering Bajan affairs. You see what is happening in Guyana , we were once the majority there, but in the 50’s our ancestors told us to take in our education because the Indians will soon be the majority and we would not stand a chance in such a society without an education. Well some of us have education and no job in Guyana, so there.

Oh,the gall of this guest! What is Norman Faria’s ethnicity? I’d like to say to Comm. Dottin not to accept this threat fr this man. Bajans are rightfully incensed by this encroachment upon their sovereign territory and they reserve every right to protect theirs and speak out against it. It appears as if Faria wants to be the arresting officer, judge, jury and executioner. “Wording of an apology to be approved by Consulate’s counsel.” This alone is an insult to the gov’t and the people of Barbados. And who the hell are you calling “miscreant elements?” Are these the same elements that are tearing Guyana apart and committing these horrendous murders? With all the crime that’s going on in Guyana why won’t you and your counsel go back there and solve your problems. This man’s letter wreaks with the stench of authoritarism, superiority. With regard to your 5th para exactly what are you saying? Name the countries. Why does Barbados have to emulate the likes of Canada, US and UK when it comes to free speech? Don’t you see them riddled with hypocrisy? Why can’t Barbados do it her way?
JC // July 8, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Norman Faria you have brought the wrath of BAJANS down on your head. Know your blasted place!
After you sent this letter to the media family, you should have been scurrying unto a plane.
Mr. Thompson said Barbados for Barbadians I hope he meant it; since it seems that he is allowing Mr. Faria to insult us to our faces.
The scout // July 8, 2008 at 3:12 PM
I stood PROUDELY on the night of 29th Nov 1964 as a teenager to be part of the Guard Of Honour at the declaration of Independence of Barbados. It meant a lot to me then to have been chosen from among hundreds of young bajans to perform that duty. As I got older I now see it as an HONOUR enthrusted on me. It is because of this and the strides that this country has make over the last 44 or so years, the many sacifises my parents and many other parents made to bring this nation to this stage. I CANNOT now allow my labour and that of many other patriotic bajans to be taken away from my children and my children’s children. I owe it to them and I would die defending the legacy that they have left me and that I want to pass on to my offspring and the offspring of the many many other loyal bajan. I stand committed to fight to my last ounce of blood to defend my inheritence.
The scout // July 8, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Just let me clarify a single point here. It was on the night of the 29th Nov 1964. We became an Independent nation at midnight which started the 30 th Nov. I stood in mud almost above my ankles with my chest push high. Everytime I think about it I feel more proud to be a BAJAN andthe RIGHT to defend this GREAT NATION.

Duppy Lizard // July 8, 2008 at 5:01 PM
You make a rather interesting deduction JC. I made a comment in Bajan and you perceive it as “condescending”. I am not a psycho analyst but I am sure that the likes of Freud could read much more into your perception than what you did with mine.
Negroman // July 8, 2008 at 5:04 PM
I am also loyal, patriotic black Barbadian and I will not allow MY COUNTRY to be over run by miscreants from Guyana. It is unfair that Barbados must pay for bad governemnts in Guyana. We must pay for the destruction of Guyana by guyanese. Guyana the country of natural resources was ruined by the inept government of the PPP.The bad ,racist policies of PPP against black people have caused the stagnation and destruction of Guyana.
Barbados as a result must accept all & sundry from that desolate country and absorbed them into our country. It is wrong.
Guyanese must recognise that fleeing the shores of Guyana is not going to solve the problems of Guyana.Guyanese boost that their people have good work ethnics, they are resillient, resourceful and hard working. Please use those attributes to please stay at home and build your country.Stop using all types of trickery, scams and all means of deception to get into Barbados and remain in Barbados. We cannot absorb all of the Guyanese wanting to come and live here.
Our parents, grand parents and great grand parents made tremendous sacrifices for us the offsprings to have the standard of living we enjoyed today. It is unfair that we must hand over the hard work and sacrifices made to unfortunate guyanese who instead of making similar sacrifices did the opposite.
Guyanese please make an effort to build your country so as to enhance the quality of life that your people will be proud of the effort.
Running from Guyana will not solve the problems of Guyana
Please do not leave the beautiful island of Guyana to be exploited by the brazillians, chinese and europeans wha are now buying large chunks of land in Guyana.

Wahlah….this is great ! The Scout stood proudly in mud in 1964 as Barbados got independence…he said so in two posts and even said that the country made strides over the last 44 years. Only problem as Duppy Lizard points out, Barbados became independent in 1966! JC says DL is being condescending.
Duppy yuh think that we got some imposters here? I notice that Negroman hot pun the scene proclaiming that he is loyal, patriotic, black Barbadian.

Anonymous // July 8, 2008 at 5:30 PM
My hope for Barbados is the development of the offshore oil. I hope government works assiduously in that regard. Barbados is the shining light in the Caribbean, a great nation in a sea of racism, poverty, corrupt leaders and so on , so it is only fitting that the peoples from other lands namely Guyana will seek refuge in a land that is Paradise on Earth, therefore, Government must put in place a criteria for determining who is Bajan and who is not, in other words, Barbadian nationality will NOT be determined through naturalisation or by birth given by an illegal alien from Guyana, but say by using a criteria of how long your family has lived in the country. So for example lets say a person like Norman Faria would have his Barbadian citzenship revoked, but allowed to live in Barbados, and the same would hold true for his Bajan born offspring, however, in time of crisis Norman Faria and offsprings would be deported back to Guyana. Barbadian citizenship would be determined by ancestry, so somebody whose family line goes back to 18th century Barbados would have no problem, and this criteria would apply to most black families in the country. Do you all think Japan allows every Tom, Dick and Harry to come in, have children and then say they are Japanese, no way. Now every Guyanese there should be seen as a guest worker, and as such would be sent home immediately in the event of crisis or misbehaviour. I think the above letter by Faria is out of line. His purpose in Bridgetown is to help standed Guyanese, Guyanese in trouble with the law, and about to be deported back to Guyana, but fro him to stymie the voices of the people of Barbados on a genuine issue of concern, Guyanese immigrantion is eye pass in the highest degree. The Police Chief should not reply, but just toss that E-Mail in the trash bin. Barbados is a sovereign, so to state it should follow the is pattern of the US shows us how un-educated faria is. He should tell Guyana to follow the US for the Lord know sthat Guyana is indeed of some model to follow. Hopi you meking me laugh, Guyana is only 83,000 sqyare miles, It is almost 500 miles in lenght from Waini Point in the North to Lumid Pau in the south and almost 300 miles across at iss widest. It has a ocean front of 285 miles form Point Waini in the Northwest to Springlans/Coriverton in the east. There are no islands int he Essequibo as big a s Barbados, big myth. It did have the first stint a tself rule in 1953, but that was due mainly to teh efforts of Mrs. Janet Jagan , thats right Mrs. Jagan. Anyway, you all mek me laugh sometimes. Anyway Negroman you right on track, you all don’t have to bargain with no one, since when.
Duppy Lizard // July 8, 2008 at 5:35 PM
I don’t know about imposters but I could certainly think of a lot of other names. You know, the internet is a wonderful thing. These blogs afford us to comment and express ourselves with some degree of annonymity. But frankly, most of these posts are downright shameful. Yes Barbados is a small island and yes it is over populated as it is, but ilegal immigration should be a matter for the Immigration Department to deal with. Talking about illegal immigration – what about the countless thousands of Barbadians who left these shores for a “vacation” and never returned.

Fancy the leader of Guyana has to visit Guyanese communities when ever he is on official business overseas. I visited a blog site in USA. They are very concerned by the amount of indo-guyanese migrating to that country. Over 100,000 in the last 3 to 4 years. In fact, a survey shows that they are less guyanese in the country now than ten years ago and out of the remaining ones at home 95% are awaiting their documents for migration. We would soon have a large country bigger than England with little or no inhabitants. These are the ” loyal to their country ” people Faria talking about?

Anyway Faria Mama must rolling in she grave, an a going on the premis that Faria is a white man, and if that is the case then in the day he was a TUF party supporter and most likely Roman Catholic, so now he in Barbados assiduously promoting the agenda of PPP and is probably now a Hindu. It is a good thing Barbados does not operate an airline because you all would have to deal with Indian Guyanese damaging the jets. Did you all hear that a drunken East Indian Guyanese in the first class section of Delta Airlines jet opened the emergency exit at Timehri causing the emergency shute to eject from the jetliner. The drunken East Indian Guyanese passenger then slid down the shute onto the tarmac. This resulting in Delta loosing lots of money and delaying the jetliner return to flight for 24 hours. The drunken East Indian passenger upon arrest stated that he saw got upset when he saw 2nd class passengers leaving the jet before him that is why he acted in such fashion. East Indian Guyanese have also done likewise to a Zoom Canadian Airlines jet. You see how they are.

This country is sinking under the deluge of guyanese coming to Barbados. How long will this unchecked immigration situation allow to continue?
I heard Rawle Eastmond in the budget debate begging that illegal immigrants ,their families and those who are illegal and have children in Barbados and those that are pregnant should be allow to remain and provision should be made for those children to be school at the expense of Barbadians.Isn’t this a disaster waiting to happen? If we allow this to happen these miscreants from Guyana will continue to use all means to get to Barbados with the full knowledge that once they get pass immigration they will be able to enjoy the social benefits that we the hard working Barbadians tax payers have to contribute.
This is totallly wrong.I shudder to think what will happen if the BLP was still in power.

The representative figure of “Bussa” that occupies a central position on the roundabout; is just as central to our being. Bussa’s fixed gaze looks to the sky for deliverance, he is clearly not a brahmin.
It is he, and his kind who felt the injustices and paid the price.

Prime minister thompson warmed my heart tonight after he made it quite clear he will not be allowing this free for all of immigrants into barbados anymore.
What was more frightening was what he hinted at;
‘That owen arthur apparently had some sinister plan with regards to the free movement of persons and in particular guyanese which he was engaging in without disclosing to the barbadian public.
I personally want to see the public humiliation of owen arthur and mia mottley for what they have visited upon this country – with these detestable pests – the guyanese.
Tonight david thompson spoke about how things he had never sen in his life in barbados he is seeing now – where for example, in st phillip where he lives there are 15 adults living in a 3 bedroom house with just 1 toilet, and the conversion of a pig pen as a house for these guyanese.
He mentioned how he spoke directly to basdeo jagdeo – the homosexual guyanese president – about his intention to charter barbados own course of CSME.
Tonight norman faria and his countrymen must be sleeping a little uneasy.
I wonder how chris sinckler feeling now, after those stupid remarks he made earlier.
I am imploring bajans to have pride and respect in yourself and your country and don’t engage in any marriages of convenience,or any activities which will help the illegal guyanese to remain here.
Mr Thompson, thank you – so good so far – but we are waiting and watching for the soon implementation of new immigration policies.

@ Anonymous, Ian Walcott, NegroMan, Pat
To begin with, I am a Guyanese. An Afro-Guyanese and female to be exact. I am not seeking to condemn, nor negotiate. In essense “I just feel like talking because this is a topic close to my heart”.
I have read all your blogs on this topic and quite frankly while I agree with most of what was said, I was hurt by some comments and have a few things to say as well.
My family, in seeking better opportunities, relocated to Barbados almost 8 years ago. My father was employed at first as a manager. I was just shy of 22 years of age at the time. Having enjoyed the middle-class lifestyle in GY all my life, I couldn’t care less where we were relocating I just wanted the same securities I had at home and probably more. My father, in looking for a better career never thought that his family would be scorned because of our nationality. I am sure that he thought he was doing the right thing for us. Just as the many other nationalities who make Barbados their second home. I would like to think that because he paid taxes like all Barbadians, that we were not parasites to the social systems such as health and education. Needless to say, even though he was a tax payer, he still had to pay tuition fees for my younger brother’s education at a PUBLIC secondary school and I too had to pay tuition fees at a tertiary level institution.
Just after the Prime Minister’s announcement last night, I asked my husband (yes he is a proud Bajan and is supportive of the PM’s budget – “…but I lil vex about the cellphone subscription being a pre-paid customer. Anyhow…yes of all things..I vex about dat”)
1. How is it that non-nationals drain the social system if they are paying taxes like Barbadians?
2. How can illegal immigrants have access to the such systems if they have to show a Barbados ID card (which they should not have) to access those services at those very institutions.
3. If you don’t feel that Owen was protecting your jobs why are there so many illegal immigrants? Obviously immigration feels that these people be it carpenters or artisans etc., were not needed in your island, refused them work permits and these very people decided to flout the laws and obtain cheap employment from the same Bajans that cry foul.
4. The Barbados ID card has an expiry date on it if you are employed with a work permit and expires when that permit expires. How then can people without permits (now illegal) be able to access services without a VALID ID card? Tell me!
5. You can’t blame the previous government for everything that went wrong with your immigration system as the same officers in immigration accepts gifts from non-nationals in exchange for status. And even some ‘normal’ Barbadians greedy for money apply for work permits on behalf of non-nationals knowing fully well that they are not employing them in the full sense, but just earning a nice $$ on the side.
6. Having lived here for over 5 years and thinking we would be eligible to apply for residency, we were surprised to learn that because my father later worked under the Caricom Skilled National certificate, that this would not be possible. So it seems that even though we’ve been here legally all these years, renewing our permits when we should, abiding the laws of the land, we were not eligible to fully settle here. (I can understand why this would be, with the magnitude of people moving within the region and countries needing to protect its citizens).
So it seems that it may have been better to hide out from immigration and after 5 years apply for residency (spoken from the mouth of an immigration officer to my mother 3 months ago). The US gives people green cards easier than Barbados gives residency..unless the foreigner is a white man (now that is a different story). So tell me, why do you think that your current system is giving out residency left right and center?
Maybe Ian Walcott or someone out there in blogland can inform me, since this is my experience.
My husband has pointed out that it is the Indo-Guyanese that has made it bad for all. Well that may be true, and even though I may dislike them and they me [for obvious reasons] I do not think that a forum such as this should promote hatred for this race. So here is the deal people, the PM may introduce more stringent measures at immigration with respect to the influx of Guyanese people but he will become unpopular if it seems that he is singling out Indian people from entering his country. And even though you don’t like them and I don’t like them this is not the way to show it. I also strongly agree with Pat and her mistrust of Indo-Guyanese and I guess that all Bajans are aware them just as I have had to when I lived with them in GY. You have all hit the nail on the head with respect to their mannerisms but this is not local to Indo-Guyanese only but also to Bajans of Indian descent. Tssssk tsssk!
Don’t mind Norman Faria and his letter. People make ‘mistakes’. I don’t think the Commissioner will do anything about it because this is a democratic country and no one had broken any laws by airing their views. Plus Mr. Faria, in case you are reading this and you are appalled by my stance..”How could you tell the people what to say on their radio? It is not your place. Fair is fair! I don’t think the British High Commissioner for Guyana calls in on Voice Of Guyana and tells them what to do on their station. Come on!”
I also do not agree with the minister that said that children of illegal immigrants should have access to schools. It is true that the children are not to blame, but it is their parents that put them in this situation and it would be unfair to Barbadians.
In case you were all wondering, I have not applied to be a citizen of Barbados by marriage. I do not think I can ever be a proud Barbadian and I can never appreciate the Barbados as much as you do. So you can say that I married my husband because I love him and that I am still here because of him!
How come I don’t hear yall bawling when the white man puts an ad in the papers saying he could find no suitable Bajan to be a NANNY! and is therefore applying for a work permit for such non-national. Anyhow.. I out!
JC // July 10, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Hi shy princess i respect your feelings and opinions.and am sorry that you have found yourself between this immigration policy mess.
However, dont point your fingers at us because you know there is good within a bajan or not you woud not have married one!
BLAME your fellow country men they have caused this predicament we are in, we bajans ourselves have caused it as well.
I know that you love your husband and if what you say is true; I respect that vibe.
However, I dont respect when people think that ‘honest bajans are ‘asses’ and take advantage of our niceness.
Like for example the Guyanese woman who put an old man in the Geriatric and has all her family now living in his house. and he now has to fight for what is his and yes he is still in hospital whilst she remains his upstairs and downstairs house;
or the young guyanese girl who had an old man hustling up the court steps for marraige and he is in his 70s;
or the guyanese woman who sticks with a bajan man until her citizenship has been approved and then divorces since she was already married and then she brings her entire family and REAL husband to my Barbados;
or like the Guyanese man who bought an ID Card for 1500 dollars from a dishonest civil servant;
or the guyanese women who for three saturdays in february or march wrote in the papers and declared to the whole world that they have AIDS and they have given it to bajan men and oops I forget felt for the man’s children and ‘ugly’ wife but still have passed on that destructive disease.
So you see Shyness your kinmen have caused bajans to detest them.
I understand why you cant love Barbados as we do;
We saw our foreparents with NOTHING achieve SOMETHING through dedication and hard work! You werent there that night on 1966 (neither was I) furthermore I was not bornt yet;
But it is as if I WAS there;
I saw my flag being raised; from the words of my parents and teachers and older community; I could literally feel the rain and the yucky mud all over my feet. But ya know what I could feel my heart beating with pride because I know that this was MY BARBADOS!
Therefore Ms. Shyness I can understand why you would never want to be a bajan you have already found that peace in Guyana.
Dont you think we need that peace of mind AGAIN!
Yours respectfully,
JC
Peace

Hi Shy Princess, I am Guyanese too, female and middle aged and as we say a catching my hand in another country. I have mixed feelings, because on the one hand I an Afro Guyanese, and can identify with the majority Afro Bajan, however, I am also torn apart regarding the plight of the Indo Guyanese, they are Guyanese, ah work with them, went to shcool with them, and live by them and I do like them on a person to person basis. I am also ashamed of the actions and behaviour of some Guyanese, you read the examples by JC. I can give you plenty of such examples about Guyanese that have occured in the USA from Alaska to Wyoming and from Mexico, Belize, Canada and even Australia, but I will not bother, as JC gave examples from Barbados. I say to you Shy Princess, enjoy your life with that lovely Bajan man, because when all is said and done do you really think the greater Guyanese population, or the republic of Guyana care about what happens to you, I say NO. You get sent back home they will say look at she, she went overseas and did seomthing bad and now look at she. You get your Barbadian citzen ship and just keep on keeping on, live up …love, protect, respest. One more thing Barbados and the USA have many, many similarities, BUT they are different in this regard, Barbados is much smaller than the US, however, they both face the daunting task of how to handle the immigration problem. PM Thompson seems to heading in the right direction in handling this delicate problem, but only time and tide will tell. I will tell you what will happen there in Barbados if the problem is not nipped in the bud quickly. Here I go, there was a great influx of illegal immigrants from the country of El Salvador to the US, in the late 70’s, well the Americans discriminated against the El Salvadoreans, or so they say, now the El Salvadoreans come from a country similar to Guyana, well the El Salvadoeans formed a gang as a lark, a fun thing in a Los Angeles park, well that gang, now called MS13 has evolved into one of the most voilent gangs the US authorities have ever seen. they have spread across the US wrecking havoc in major US cioties. They murder, sell drugs, shoot people in the streets for no reason, maybe they did not like how a person looks, or a person is walking in their territory, so they kill the person and so on The US has deported some back to El Salvador where they now create havoc on their fellow El Salvadoreans, that is why I have advocated for the education of all children in Barbados as a way to keep their young minds pre-occuppied as a way of preventing mischivious activities in Barbados, for as you know if that was to occur with Guyanese in Barbados like what happened to El Salvadoreans in America, we the Guyanese would bear the brunt of the violenc. Well Shy have fun. I am from the East Bank of Demerara. have a good life and do become a citizen of the Land of the Flying fish. I have never seen a fish fly, but you might have so enjoy. Love

Anonymous, after reading all these posts by you I could have sworn that you were a Bajan. Dual citizenship. I don’t think I am ready to take that step just yet. I know it will probably make my life easier if I do.
Anyhow we will all have to see what these new immigration policies will look like now and how this situation will be handled.

shy princess and Anonymous
I have no sympathy and no time for these sob stories.
If as you say you are afro guyanese and we on this blogs have been crying out about the indo guyanese illtreatment of you – the afro guyanese – to the point where all the government contracts, good government jobs, loans etc are given to the indians – so that you have to run and hide out in other people’s country – and you tell us the bajans who are seeing the same nasty behaviour of the indo guyanese creeping in – you tell us that you worried about the indo guyanese in barbados.
To be truthful I have been very helpful to many afro guyanese but a guyanese, is a guyanese, is a guyanese – the majority of them, though not all are liars and schemers – and right now I don’t want them in this country.
The guyanese who came here in the 60s and 70s were a decent lot – but what we are getting are the desperate dregs – so forget your pride – and go back and build your country.
I am totally disgusted with guyanese now – and so are a lot of bajans.

No one asked for your sympathy and certainly not your precious time! No one is sobbing here either my dear. All I asked for, were answers to 6 intelligent questions. You have disappointed me in that regard as I was really looking foward to your reply. But maybe Ian Walcott, NegroMan or Pat will provide answers.
Cheers!

ShyPrincess welcome to the blogs.I understand and respect your views. As a black guyanese I welcome you to Barbados.I do not have much of a problem with black gyyanese. As a matter of fact I have quite a few black guyanese friends myself
I have a few issues though that I will express an opinion on.
Firstly,Shyprincess why did you had to say that you are a middle class black guyanese.I have problems with this foolishness of class.I do not believe in classism. It is an elitist belief that have us as black people divided and confused. Some of us believe that because of our educational background, financial position, and our apparent social status some of us blacks believe that we are superior to other blacks. That is a divide and rule tactic used by slave masters to divide us and hence conquer us and use us blacks.we must put that nonsense of class one side at recognise that all of us are of one race the black race and we wust work together for the preservation of the race.
The black race is under threat of extinction from the other races,The black male in USA is one the most endanger species of living matter today on the face of the world.
Secondly,Shyprincess it appears from your writings that you have a certain level of education. We need people with special skills to enhance our society. Our country can not go forward with, unskilled, uneducated people like the indo-guyanese flocking into the country. The majority of indo-guyanese is masos, carpenters, labourers and general workers. They are not the type that we need to handle the complexities of technology the world has today. We need highly skilled, highly educated people to build Barbados to first status that our leaders envisioned for us.We can not achieve that with an influx of stupid indo-guyanese.
Finally, you understand the problems that indians created in Guyana as a resultof their racism against us blacks and I am sure that was one of the fundamental reasons why your family left Guyana and decided to live in a black Barbados.
Do you want to see those same racial problems occur in Barbados?
Do not defend those scoundrels.
ShyPrincess // July 11, 2008 at 4:15 PM
@ Negroman
Thanks for your reply. I understand your point of view on the classism and also on the question of how much value the Indo-Guyanese provides to the Barbados economy.
Firstly, my ‘classist’ comment was not meant to be interpreted as me saying that I’m better than other blacks, but was an avenue for me to declare that I was living comfortably in GY and did not come from a desperate situation as some Bajans seem to think is the case with all Guyanese moving here. Imagine people ask me if Guyana got roads and all kinds of nonsense! Anyhow, I stand corrected on that point.
**The scoundrels**
Not defending them (I recently had to put up with one who insisted on blaring his indian music) but these people, the ones who really know their trade, have saved Barbadians constructing/renovating homes many $$$ dollars. I know this is a sore point but it is the truth! I don’t think they meant to pull bread from a Bajan’s mouth by asking for less money to build kitchen cupboards. They have asked for what they’re accustomed earning in Guyana. Next to nothing! I hope that when all is said and done, I can find a few of them around when I am ready to begin building because I sure as hell can’t afford no big time contractor :-)
No I don’t want to see the same racial problems in Barbados as in GY. If they are kept as a minority they can never out power the black Bajan. And that is all that needs to be done. The new immigration policy can perhaps implement a method to measure the skills possessed such as the one used in Canada. Years ago my father was not eligible (by this system) to move to Canada because we were too young and he was the sole provider. I took an online assessment recently and I passed! Alot of Guyanese and other Caricom nationals migrate to the larger countries such as USA, Canada and England to find better opportunity, but I’d rather stay in the Caribbean because I can identify with this culture and think its the best place to raise children.
Negroman, I appreciate your views. All this talk makes me want to go home to see what development has taken place over the last few years since I’ve last been there.
Anonymous (Baje) is probably mad at me for coming on this blog with my ’sob story’ as he calls it and in his anger told me to get my – ‘A’ triple ‘S’ – back to Guyana to rebuild it. Well you had me thinking about that during the day and I’ve decided that you’ve somehow managed to make me feel ‘homesick’.
Have a great weekend all you bloggers!

I don’t have a problem with any national visiting this little rock of ours. I must say though that our Government needs to look closely at this sudden influx of indians whether guyaniese or who ever.. now we can continue to pretend that there is no influx if we want but one day we will wake up and Barbados as we know it today is no longer … Any sovering country should not be ashame nor affarid to deal with illegal immegration… if any one is found here beyond there stay they should be deported forthwith and not alowed to return.. they broke the law and therefore should be made to pay… beyond this who wants to visit can visit and go back home.. I love to visit Canada and Miami .. once my time is up I fly back to the rock called Barbados my home …. so do the same …
ShyPrincess // July 13, 2008 at 4:21 AM
@JC
I’d like to think of myself as a practical and intelligent person. The reason I came on this forum in the first place was not to make friends, nor to condemn nor negotiate, but to offer another vantage point to bloggers on the whole issue of the influx of illegal Guyanese (in particular the indo-Guyanese) in Barbados and also to share my experience with the current immigration policies in making Barbados my second home. I expect that we’d agree to disagree in our views but it is my observation that some bloggers have their opinions and are not open to discussion and as such I won’t be responding to those persons.
JC, you are entitled to your view which is that I am crazy to hire an indo-guyanese to construct my home even though I dislike them. In my previous post, I was responding to NegroMan’s post which said and I quote:
“Shyprincess it appears from your writings that you have a certain level of education. We need people with special skills to enhance our society. Our country can not go forward with, unskilled, uneducated people like the indo-guyanese flocking into the country. The majority of indo-guyanese is masos, carpenters, labourers and general workers. They are not the type that we need to handle the complexities of technology the world has today”
…to which my response was “Not defending them…but these people, the ones who really know their trade, have saved Barbadians constructing/renovating homes many $$$ dollars.”
JC, you DON’T have to LIKE a coolie man to save yourself $$$. My in-laws, even though they DISLIKE indo-guyanese, always hire them to renovate their house or whatever you may. MANY Bajans do it…but you accuse me of being a hypocrite because I plan to do it.
Further, it is not a matter of looking out for my own…BUSINESS IS BUSINESS. At the end of the day I will use whoever gives me VALUE FOR MONEY be it Chinese or Indo-Guyanese. Who want to get vex with me for saying that well that’s your DAMN problem! You DID NOT accompany me to the frigging bank for my mortgage! If black people “stop trying to juck out yuh eye” then we won’t have to support other businesses ran by other ethnic groups and we could live in total ISOLATION!!!
If a black man will charge me $200 for fixing a pipe and an indo-guyanese will charge me $80, I will bite my tongue and hire the latter. I guess in your case you’d rather spend the extra $120 than to let that coolie man in your house. LoL. Maybe I am accustomed to the push and pull relationship between the black and indo societies that [this] is not a big deal for me. We hate each other but will still support the other in business if it makes sense to. JC, I wonder what you think of your black Bajan women who dislike Indians but still buy curtains in Abeds or shop at most Indian-owned stores in Swan Street. Are they hypocrites too? Or is it just me?
I don’t expect you to understand this twist since you are probably one to shop at SuperCentre even though they are other supermarkets selling the same items at a cheaper price. If you are a saver as I am, you’d make sure to spend wisely even if you did not like who you were buying from. A few years ago I use to shop at SuperCentre Warrens for the convenience and the ‘experience’. Not to mention the brands. In these times, I now I shop at Cherish and Popular to save money.
How many of you so-called black bajans run to give white owned BS&T your business which in turn probably contributes to the demise of small black owned businesses? I wonder if JC dislikes white people but still shop at Dacostas? Are you guilty of this? Ever wondered why SuperCentre does so well and supermarkets like Less Frills had to shut down? Even though the prices at Less Frills were cheaper than SuperCentre. Maybe SuperCentre has the brands that Less Frills didn’t have and people preferred to support that white-owned company than black owned Less Frills.
How many people here are members of ShopSmart, say aye! Let me see all who support this black business. I certainly do! WHY? To save money.
Finally, let me see all those who WILL support a black man when he is charging you 100% more than someone of another ethnicity? Because this is what this is all about … isn’t it JC? Me trying to save my hard earned dollars and you getting vex with me for it.
You’re your own man and you can get vex all you want, but I am not going to let my dislike of one race make me throw my money down the drain.
So shoot me!

I agree with you 100%. The US deports people who broke the law even if they migrated there at the age of 5. But they’ve also given green cards to illegal ‘aliens’ living there for an extended time. Many people of Caribbean descent leave these shores with hopes of making a better life in the US and find themselves staying there illegally and doing miniscule jobs. They do it in North America and also regionally.
I don’t understand how people can visit another country and hide out. I’d be sh^tting my skin at every move I make.
I think that the Caribbean as a whole need to revisit their immigration laws, especially since Caricom implemented the free movement of people act.

In addition I have noticed before that whenever the so-called afro guyanese responds here about our comments on indo guyanese – they always try to lecture us about our relationship with white bajans – and how we seem to prefer them over the illegal guyanese who are hiding out here.
For the record shy princess and others – white bajans – are bajans -o.k.
You on the one hand talk about how you can’t hate the guyanese indian and feel sorry for them even though they treat you like dirt back in guyana – and this is because you went to school with them and eat with them – therefore they are part of your society.
Well in barbados -especially among the poorer whites, black bajans ate ,play and yes sleep with them and even inter marry – and yes they are an integral part of our society.
Barbados problem has a lot to do with classism even between the ethnic groups.
Upper class whites look down on lower class whites.
Upper class blacks look down on lower class blacks.
However I would not give up our richard ‘dick’ hoad for a thousand guyanese.
Nor Maurice foster,or francis chandler – just to name a few.
Good, solid citizens of barbados who just happen to be white.
So don’t come here trying to pitt black bajans against white bajans – we already recognise that after 350 years of existence – 40 of which we spent as an independent country – and we haven’t yet gotten our relationship quite together – then who the hell tell you bringing in another ethnic group (the indians) – who are known to be extremely racist towards persons of african descent – will some how make life in this country any easier.
Right now the world facing a recession and we have bajans struggling trying to make ends meet – yet we have over 40,000 guyanese parked out in this country the most of them illegal and making no contributions to our social services – yet they are here putting presuure on our limited housing,on our scarce water supply,on our shrinking garbage disposal landfill,on our health and educational services – and I can go on and on.
If guyanese don’t get it that they are a nuisance wherever they go throughout the caribbean whether it is barbados,st lucia, trinidad, antigua or whether it is canada,U.K. – wherever.
People are fed up with basdeo jagdeo tacitly encouraging his people to go flood out other people’s country even if it means staying illegally – while they send money back home and build up the country for the indians there who control everything.
It is time for guyanese to go home – before the very ‘passive’ bajans react in a way that may shock everybody.
A word to the wise is enough.

so wha’ that is life in their neck of the woods but NOT IN BARBADOS! that is the type of attitude that has caused the likes of them to loose what was rightfully thiers stupes!
We have not even ironed out our differences amongst ourselves, and you all and your ‘brethern’ the indo guyanese have come here to manipulate us and insult our way of life and thinking.
PLEASEEEEEEEE!
SPARE ME! No wonder things in guyana will never improve, because you all refuse to fight No wonder you all had to run and leave no balsted back bone!
I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE!
So I will fight until the last breath in my body to KEEP what is MINE!
Yardbroom // July 13, 2008 at 7:20 AM
Some contributors to this debate have looked at the issue through the narrow focus of the price of commodities; baked beans, flour etc in a supermarket or the cost of labour used in building a home.
The issues are greater than that short term basic level, they are more to do with the “society” we have have had, have now and would like in the future. It is also about the social and ethnic structure of our country, and how peace can be maintained.
The price of a can of beans in a supermarket, pales into insignificance when compared to the society we live in, and the future hopes for our children and grand children.
We -Bajans – might be foolish for having the opinions we have, but this is our country and we are allowed to be foolish in it.
Anonymous // July 13, 2008 at 7:34 AM

I will say this it is my belief that you stand a better chance of being treated fairly with an average white bajan than you stand with an average indian.
We all know there are persons who are racially prejudiced in every racial group,However the overwhelming eveidence whether through personal stories or through statistics (if done) will show that despite their racist viewpoint a white person – take here in barbados – a white person if a black man shows that he is willing to work hard,be honest and provide quality work – that white person will offer work to that black man on a regular basis – once he knows he can rely on him.
However check out the indians here – the only time they buy from a black man – is if they want to get your land, or your business – or something that they can use to make more wealth.
Indians don’t go and support poor blacks and but their fish cutters,or go into their boutiques and buy their clothes.
They only buy from africans when they really, really cannot help it – and therefore africans must do the same.
Indians to my mind TAKE MORE from a society than they give back, and wherever they go they always demand that society conform to their way of life rather than they conform to the norms of the society they find themselves in.
So you must make arrangements and change your school regulations to make allowance for their children to wear pants underneath their dresses even though you are in a 98% christian country.
You must allow them to put up flags all around the homes, and cannot criticise their form of worhip although they criticise ours whether publicly or privately – so if you say anything against allah – then you are marked for a jihad against you.
Note christians are not given that privelege in India,Pakistan,Saudia Arabia.
Next they will ask for national days to celebrate their gods, and insist on having token numers of their race in the parliament,or government boards etc.
Right now Fiji,U.K. trinidad and such like are having hell with these group of people of indian descent because -especially in fifj and in U.K. they realise that these indian people came in quietly at first – as they are doing now in barbados – but as soon as they felt they had numerical and financial strenght – then they began to show their true colours -demanding that private catholic schools in the u.k. allow them in as muslims or sikhs or hindus even though to enter that school they must be a catholic.
In trinidad newspaper reports suggested that hindu schools which are government financed have refused to allow the hindu children to participate in state sponsored xmas day programmes which include the singing of ‘christmas’ carols.
Trinidad under basdeo panday has allowed the hindus to build a stautue of their hindu god – hanuman- which is 75 feet tall, and some trinis say you can see that statue from various parts of the island.
Now tell me why a country which is almost evenly split among africans and indians (less than a point difference) and actually have a majority christian population (since some indians have converted to christianity as presbyterian, pentecostals etc) – why that minority religion was allowed to build a stautue which towers over the whole countrywhile other religions like the catholics have always maintained the practice of small deities in their place of worship?
These are some of the things our political leadership, and members of the media and ordinary joe citizens need to reflect on as we consider the implications of the large number of indians coming into this country barbados.
JC // July 13, 2008 at 7:45 AM

The argument of the cost to build a house and the price of goods may seem narrow compared to the bigger issues of society, but they are the driving forces behind what is happening to society today.
A shortage of labour caused the then governments to welcome ‘foreign’ labour and as such with the difference in cultures and so on, society has changed into what it is today.
It will never be what it was yesterday and all you can do is to try to preserve what is left today for tomorrow.
Three lions // July 13, 2008 at 9:33 AM
Shy princess you have done a good job of hiding your ethnicity. I know you are not black Bajan. I am unsure if you are white Bajan, coolie, Indo Guyanese or a next foreigner. What I am sure of is that you are a racist.

You said: …”a shortage of labour caused the then government to welcome”foreign” labour and as such the difference in cultures and so on, society has changed into what it is today.”
Men dictate events, events do not dictate men. It is because of actions situations arise.
The fact is the previous government made a “mistake”,that is no reason for us to condone that mistake and pretend nothing has happened, and carry on regardless, that is a policy of madness.
We -Bajans – are not to be told by you what we can or cannot do now, we will determine what is to be done. It might not be agreeable to you but that is of no concern to us. Fortunately we are still in a position to control events. It is opinions like those expressed by you and others here which reinforces our belief that this small island will go the way of Guyana, Trinidad and Fiji. It should not be allowed to happen.

I don’t get your drift. Where in my response to your blog did I indicate that you should accept all that the previous government has done with respect to the influx of Indo-Guyanese?
What I did imply was that because of such an event (yes dictated by men) that your society has its current issues.
*****
“We -Bajans – are not to be told by you what we can or cannot do now, we will determine what is to be done. It might not be agreeable to you but that is of no concern to us.”

How dare you? For your information, I have every right to suggest what can be done as this is also the land of my children and their children to come, unless you want to imply that they will be less of a Bajan because they have a Guyanese mother.

My friend you see what we are up against.
As the old people use to say:you cutting stick to cut your backside.
or
You cutting stick to break your back.
What a thing eh? The guyanese female has the audacity to ask you how dare you say what you said.
You see whether they are here illegally or whether they were able to inveigle themselves through marriage to a ‘bajan’ man – to be able to get citizenship – then we the barbadians whose great, great, great grandparents toiled to make this country the beauty that it is – are now being told by these ‘ unwelcome guests’ – HOW DARE YOU!
Bajans you ain’t see nothing yet.
Over and over again persons have come on this very blog and told us how there are guyanese in this country who have been telling bajans to their face how – ‘they hate bajans’ – how bajans too stupid – how they will run bajans outof swan street as vendors etc.
This has the making of some deep social unrest, because while I must admit shy princess that there are stupid bajans who get taken in by the guiles of the guyanese especially the females – there are a whole lotta bajans out there – who will not take the guyanese attitude and their increasing presence so easy.
So you better walk good hear.
Satyendra // July 13, 2008 at 11:21 AM
For the record, I am Indo Guyanese, a Hindu and educated. I am in Barbados legally and have never had any problems in my interactions with Barbadians or anyone else in this beautiful island. A friend told me about this site and so I have been reading some of these posts. I can understand the concern about illegal immigrants and Barbadians have every right to demand that the laws are upheld but many comments really border on being racist. So I have a few questions:
What would posters wish the Government to do with the legal Indo Guyanese immigrants who are in Barbados now?
To the poster Yardbroom: Many Guyanese and other immigrants are working in construction and agriculture in Barbados. They are here legally and were actually recruited to this island by Barbadian companies. Many of them are Indian and without their labour much development could not have taken place. My next question is: should Barbados have forgone their development plans or should only immigrants of African ancestry have been allowed in?
I appreciate the indulgence of posters.

Shyprincess you called me a fool when you insisted that I went to Supercenter and other white owned businesses. I took it as an insult that you can think that THIS BIRGHT SUNDAY MORNING IN BARBADOS, I should not have had any right in reading that a GUYANESE, is telling me JC what to say and think in my own country.
You sound just like Faria, you all want to insult Bajans in any way you all see fit be it the black guyanese the indian guyanese the charcoal guyanese or the dougla ones.
You see how noise is start you come on this site and want me to say things that are pleasing to you; you start out like all conquerors, coming with nice talk and a friendly smile but when you all get in PURE SCENES!

What we want is for those indo or other guyanese and other nationalities who come here to work at a particular plantation or a particular construction firm, should when the time is up leave and go back to barbados – like the vincy and lucians used to do when they came on contract labour.
You don’t see trinidad sending home the guyanese by the dozens every day.
Most of them come to barbados to work for the smaller agricultural holdings who applied the work permit for them – they stay for about 2 weeks and then they disappear.
A lot of these indoguyanese who come to barbados saying they are masons, carpenters, plumbers – are really labourers who worked on the rice estate or did ordinary labouring jobs back in guyana – yet they taking poor bajans hard earned money, claiming to be masons, carpenters etc, and messing up the jobs – and then the house owner has to find more money to pay a bajan to correct the mess the unskilled indo guyanese left.
As you well know indo guyanese are discouraged from marrying and interacting socially with black guyanese – and they only coming here in barbados pretending to like blacks so that they can marry and get bajan citizenship.
Don’t come now and tell me that you have black friends and you mix – becuse 1 swallow doesn’t make a summer.
Indians don’t inter marry with blacks as a general rule – and don’t like persons of african descent.
My suggestion to you is that you better advise you country men to go home – because ‘one day coming soon the people will wake up’.
Bajans are fed up of guyanese – they are like a bad taste in their mouths.
I believe that citizenship and permanent residences given under the arthur’s administration should be thoroughly reviewed and when there is fraud discovered these documents ahould be revoked.
Don’t tell me that you here legally – because that could mean anything- that you pay thousands for permament residence,or hundreds for an I..D card,or you get into a false marriage
of convenience – or you may have been allowed in under legal means – but the latter is highly unlikely because other than agricultural and construction skills – guyana does not have any skills that we are desperate in need of – and those skilled guyanese persons should be staying and help build guyana.
More than likely you came in legally, overstayed and then through whatever means got documents – but if that is the case we intend to stop that real soon.

You asked: “where in my response to your blog did I indicate that you should accept all the previous government has done with respect to the influx of Indo-Guyanese?
In your response of 13 July 8.55am
You Said…” a shortage of labour caused the then governments to welcome “foreign” labour and as such with the difference in cultures and so on, society has changed into what it is today”.
In the last paragraph you added…”It will never be what it was yesterday and will never be what it was yesterday and all you can do is try to preserve what is left today for tomorrow.”
You Said:”ALL YOU CAN DO” I take that to mean acceptance. You also referred to difference in “cultures”.
It is “you” who is on the blogs, to whom my comment is addressed any other person or persons is superfluous. This issue is bigger than any individual, is is about society, culture a way of life, sacrifices made, rewards for that sacrifice. It is not about a forty five minute plane journey, or a tin of baked beans in a supermarket or the difference between $20 an hour and $60 an hour.
It is about what it means to be a “Bajan” and how despite all the problems we have had over the centuries , with so little we have made a success of what we have. It is for that reason others with so much -they tell us – have had to come to the rock.
You have been here for two seconds and you are telling us what we must accept. It is not going to happen.

Just as you doing audits in Hard Wood Housing Company and Urban Development we want you to do an immediate audit in the immigration department and the granting of citizenships and work permits.
Make some retroactive decisions in that section.
Finally tighten up and make it very, very, very, very, very, very veeeeeeery difficult to get bajan citizenship going forward.

First to JC and anonymous. I am a Mr not a Ms. I am married to a lovely Indo Guyanese. I am here under the Caricom Skilled National Program. As to who Errol Barrow was, I know he was the first Barbadian Prime Minister and he appointed Lionel Luckhoo, an Indo Guyanese, as independent Barbados’ first High Commissioner to the UK. He was a very close friend of Forbes Burham (how do you think Caricom started?). Maybe I should put some of the blame on him for supporting Burnham who destroyed Guyana.
I agree that if one’s work permit has expired and is not renewed then one should leave but many immigrants decide to stay (legally) and make here their new home. This happens all over the world. The answers to my question were not clear and it would seem that many on this site would wish to send the legal Indo Guyanese out even after they have been given permanent residence. We don’t determine the Government of Barbados’ policies and if we were given “our documents” by the proper authorities, it is highly irregular and unfair to accuse us some illegal manipulation of the system simply on the basis of race (although JC obviously dislikes Guyanese of all races).
I await the answer to my second question.
David // July 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Maybe the time has come where we as a country need to move the argument forward. Many of us as Barbadians have expressed concern at the high level of undocumented workers with a focus on large inflows of Indians and Chinese and the possible impact it will have on our society. A society which has been the envy of the Caribbean as far as our social cohesion is concern.
Now that we have set the table we need to become more solution oriented in our arguments. Not to say that we have not heard some constructive suggestions but we need more.
The construction industry is about to fire up given governments aggressive housing program. Agriculture is about to fire up as food security takes centre stage. The BU family knows too well that migrant labour is used in these two sectors.
If we are to accept the argument that we need to grow the two sectors mentioned as part of our ongoing development it leaves the problem that we will have to manage migrant labour with precision.
This brings us to the role of our immigration department and the existing immigration policy. It appears to BU that our policy framework needs to become more efficient. We have been promised by Minister of State Maxine McClean and Attorney general Fruendel Stuart that existing immigration legislation will be revamped to become more relevant to current times.
We have a situation where current development will necessitate migrant labour but if we have Immigration laws which are full of holes this will create social dysfunction on our small island e.g.illegals etc.
Can the BU family offer some suggestion on how we should manage the challenge outlined above?

@ Satyendra
It doesn’t matter if you’re educated or not, some people on this forum will tell you that they want no Guyanese in their country. They are ungrateful for the contributions you have made to this island whether you are here legally or not. These people are not open to discussion, so don’t waste your time here as I have wasted mine!
Satyendra // July 13, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Thank you David. Well half of my second question has been addressed i.e Barbados will continue to need migrant labour to further its development objective. The only thing left to be stated by posters is if the policy should be that only immigrants of African ancestory be allowed in?
ShyPrincess // July 13, 2008 at 12:55 PM
@ Satyendra
No the Barbados government is not going to implement a policy that will allow only immigrants of African ancestry. If so, and I have said this in a previous post, the government will become rather unpopular amoung other member states which would have serious implications for CSME.
Some bloggers don’t want to me to suggest what can be done, but that is my opinion. Government is not going to push out a policy that will send the wrong message internationally.
Yardbroom // July 13, 2008 at 1:04 PM

If there are legal Indo-Guyanese in Barbados, “personally” I do not have a problem with those immigrants…providing that status can be properly established.
However, as with any other immigrant to a country; it pays to try and fit in and be a part of the wider society, not be a “separate” entity in that society. It is because of the cohesiveness which Barbados has to some degree, that has made the place what it is.
If it was, that in the short term illegal immigrants as you suggested – assisted an economic boom and the result of those immigrant’s presence led to a fractured society with races fighting each other as is evident in Guyana. The boom would have been of no “long term benefit” to Barbados.
I would never say that only immigrants of African descent should be allowed in Barbados, that has never been the case and I do not think ever will be. However, a properly managed immigration policy with work permits for those wishing to work in Barbados would have solved any short term labour problems.
Satyendra // July 13, 2008 at 1:07 PM
ShyPrincess,
Barbados is a small, heavily populated island with some demographic concerns (i.e the Barbadians are not having enough children and are living to very old ages). The influx of “others” will heighten anxieties about identity. culture etc. This has to be addressed but the racist tone and suggestions of these posters is so absurd that I don’t think it contributes anything positive to a solution.
I agree with your prediction that the Government of Barbados will not have an openly stated African only policy but there could be an “under the counter” position. However in any event, I want to know what is it that these posters on this blog want. The Guyanese that are here legally will remain here until they decide to leave. The irony of this situation is that it is very likely that in the very near future Barbadians will be knocking on Guyana’s door.
David // July 13, 2008 at 1:14 PM
@Satyendra
Please don’t trivialize this topic because of a ‘tone’. The issue of race relations whether in Guyana, Jamaica, England or USA will always evoke a high level of emotionalism. Currently in the USA we have the same argument and concern from the Hispanics. It is a global concern and Barbados is not divorce from it. Please forget the red herring arguments and if you feel your interventions can bring value i.e. to be dispassionate please do so.
This is our country and as we survey our neighbouring islands we see all hell breaking loose should we sit our asses down and say and do nothing? We think not!
Satyendra // July 13, 2008 at 1:20 PM
Good that you have responded. Thank you. I did not suggest anything about “short term illegal immigrants” but quite the opposite. I have not once supported undocumented/illegal immigration. My first concern was the crude, generalised racist commentary of some posters and in particular the carte blanche hostility towards Indians.
Now you have introduced the crux of the matter i.e. what value system shall predominate in Barbados that will conduce to orderly and peaceful development of all? Surely you would not ask me to stop being a Hindu or change my name etc. However as time is short and lunch calls, I think you have more trouble in the form of the Muslim school in Bridgetown than any number of Guyanese who by an large exhibit a West Indian creole sensibility.
JC // July 13, 2008 at 1:25 PM
You are bold to say that Guyanese who are here will remain till ther are good and ready to leave. Very very bold.
But ya no wah I cant come to your country and say these things publicly. I know your kinsmen would ask who the hell am I?
But these things can only happen IN BARBADOS!
As Anon a day coming soon that the people will wake up I am alive ready and kicking.

My apologies, I should have prefaced my last comment as being in reponse to Yardbroom.
David, far from trivializing the issue, I have spent some time today and have made every effort to be balanced. I think it crucially important that this issue be addressed within certain non negotiable parameters to wit a non racist stance.

SATYENDRA
So that you understand barbados development did not start when guyanese agricultural and construction workers started coming here in the 90’s and beyond.
Our well managed economy and society which although having challenges in the 70s and early 90s was able to sucessfully chart the rough murky waters with the guidance of both blp and dlp administrations – was however wrecked by owen arthur and his trickle down economics and his corrupt, inept policies.
In the 80’s indo guyanese came here selling their gold jewellery, some tried to stay here by marrying bajans – but with a chief immigration officer who had integrity unlike the current one – and with an administration (DLP) that had the wisdom to plan their development and their population growth – the numbers of guyanese particularly indo guyanese was kept down.
Since in the early 20th century (1930’s and 40s) bajans went down to help the guyanese sugar industry at the guyana’s government request to work as as pan boilers, fitters etc – barbadian authorities therefore felt that those guyanese in the 80’s who were coming to barbados and could prove strong barbadian lineage – should be allowed residence .
We are talking about black guyanese.
Of course like everything else they took a good thing too far and wanted to bring in the whole of buxton and linden and georgetown – so the authorities had to be more stringent.
What happened in the 90’s is that as a construction increased and agricultural workers moved off the plantations into the construction sites which were paying higher wages – the sugar plantations started sending for guyanese sugar workers – since the vincentians and st lucians former sugar worker were also turning away from agriculture to higher wages in tourism and construction.
That is when the problems started.
The indo guyanese brought with them all their detestable, sneaky, corrupt practices – whether it meant selling their bodies to immigration officers to be allowed to stay,or whether it meant paying bribes (large sums) to politicians and other civil servants for favours, ripping off bajans by claiming to be skilled artisans, marrying old bajan pensioners and then quickly divorcing them to bring in guyanese.
I find it very interesting that you are asking us here on this site to respond to your questions yet there were many questions put to you in my earlier posts and other bloggers posts re indo guyanese relationship with persons of african descent, and other complaints about their type of work.
However let me sum it up for you :indians whichever country they go to in large numbers are a negative force in terms of integration and assimilation.
Barbados has the example of guyana and trinidad closer to home – and fiji and kenya further afield to compare and consider.
We have never had conditions in barbados where there are 15 adults living in a small 3 bedroom house with one toilet. Note,Guyanese are the people living in these type of set ups.
We have never known this now current practice where we as bajans have been forced to rent rooms instead of a complete house – whether chattel or wall – but we do now because the guyanese brought that slum condition and standard to barbados.
We are not accustomed to living in pig pens.Again guyanese bringing shame and degradation to our society.
Barbados as a country has been held high in the international arena – until guyanese ,some with the duplicity of bajan immigration and police offcials along with high ranking (BLP) government officials have been engaging in human trafficking of prostitutes and young indo guyanese girls as young as 13 years old into barbados.
Barbados is now black listed as a country which engages in human trafficking – all the doing of greedy guyanese wanting to do anything to get here – and of course unscrupulous officials on the bajan side.
All of the above (ie slum conditions) our prime minister spoke about – and in most cases of overcrowding it is the indo guyanese who do it – that really is an indian practice straight out of India.Everybody – grandmother, uncle, cousin along with the dog, sheep and hen living under one roof.
What barbadians want is a cap on indians being granted citizenship.
Our prime minister at the Caricom heads meeting told basdeo jagdeo that a lot of his guyanese countrymen were turning up here under the skilled free movement under CSME – and were turning up with false certification of skills – guyanese again.
What we want is for the government to review the need for work permits and for each sector to put a list of the type of labour – ie numbers in each categories – to perform what job – and the skill level required.
Then bajans, jamaicans, vincy, lucians guyanese and all other caribbean should be allowed to apply – ONLY AFTER THE COMPANIES HAVE PUBLISHED THE LIST IN THE NEWSPAPERS AND NO BAJANS ARE AVAILABLE.
There should be a cap on the number of migrant workers coming from each caribbean country – and their should be a points system based on skill requirements and a certification board that can confirm the skills.
Government needs to start deporting all illegal immigrants like yesterday.
All persons coming in to Barbados should be fimgrprinted to avoid false documentation as per the guyanese again.
Citizenship should be only given after 4 generations(and not in the first instance) of barbadian living in barbados could be proven and based in conjunction with the population numbers that government is planning for with the country and its development.
I am sure others David might have some more suggestions.
I hope the Thompson administration is taking note.
JC // July 13, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Satyendra why do you think that I dont like Guyanese, you think that I dont have black guyanese friends stupes.
It is that I am pist off to see that i cannot go to anyones country and corrupt it like this!
Dont tell me that I should not be so judgemental, you realise that we bajans have children and when we feel threatened we have a right to say how we feel.
And for the record I DO have guyanese friends that I adore, I think I have mentioned it on this blog already and I dont have to explain my self to you.
JC // July 13, 2008 at 1:57 PM
I agree with all your suggestions anon. Only yeaterday someone who claims himself to be a pimp came on a block and claimed that the man in immigration say things tight so he cant get his whores to stay.
and you ask me why I dont like most of your kinsmen you seem to be living in faraway land!
another suggestion is that all persons who have come to work on plantations etc. must pay NIS for SURE!

I will not cast aspersions on the Barbados immigration authorities proficiency, I have no concrete reasons to do so. However, it would appear that confidence needs to be restored in that sector, if for no other reason than to restore the good name of our immigration officers.
Perhaps an independent committee could be set up to review the procedures in that sector ,with an input from an overseas country – with proven experience and good practice – to assist in the tightening up of procedures.
Barbados is a small country and it should be possible to quickly establish anyone’s immigration status.
Yardbroom // July 13, 2008 at 3:13 PM

You have asked me many questions – some based on race – which I have tried to answer.
I have only one question to ask you.
Can you name one country with a majority Indian populatian which has ever facilitated or encouraged a large influx of immigrants of African descent?
You have the “whole world” from which to choose.
Anonymous // July 13, 2008 at 3:52 PM
Satyendra is not going to answer anything to deal with how indians treat blacks in his homeland guyana,or their practice of not marrying a black.
An indo hindu would rather their child marry a indian muslim – although that would not be their first choice – but they would prefer that than their child marrying a person of african descent.
JC I hope Negroman is reading and see how in guyana – afro guyanese tell you about how they dislike indo guyanese and how badly they are treated – but once they are here in barbados – afro guyanese and indo guyanese wrap up in dey one another – and the stupid afro guyanese defending the indo guyanese – note, never the other way around.
I wonder satyendra why you choose to come to barbados where you guyanese always complaining how the bajans treat you – yet you did not go to trinidad – where there are jobs going aplenty – and plenty of your indian and hindu brethren there – wouldn’t trinidad have been a better fit for you after all?
We are only a small country with the same kind of black people that you you didn’t like in guyana.
Couldn’t yu have applied and gone to Surinam or Trinidad eh?
Makes one think.
JC // July 14, 2008 at 6:25 AM
The rate that Jagdeo and his cronies are going at, no one will be in that country soon. He will not represent his people at all. He refuses to tell them to come home.
Mr. Satyendra, if you know that we will be going to Guyana in the near future why are you not back there helping to be rebuild your country. why are you on these blogs trying to crucify bajans for loving their country.
I remember in 1991, no one within the Caribbean wanted to accept our bajan money; Although I was young I remember my mother and family and firneds fighting tooth and nail to make sure that Barbados weathered the storm; we stuck by one another and refused to leave our country.
Moreover, I also remembered you all and persons throughout the Caribbean literally rejoicing at our demise as if it was Carnival. At that point in time I was at secondary school;
However, I realised that bajans were not willing to run hide nor give up! And because of that tenacity and determination we are still fighting that good fight.
Therefore, my advice to you is to go back home and give someone else that job since you know that we will be begging you all shortly!

Anonymous,I recognise and I know that afro guyanese are prepare to defend indo guyanese in Barbados. They band together on the belief that guyanese as a whole are under threat in Barbados. It is mind boggling that black guyanese could be defending those indo guyanese. It has cause me to change my views on welcoming and accepting all black guyanese into Barbados. We balck people are somthing else.We want to be fair, nice & decent to people who are do not return the same favours to us.I do not think we will ever learn. All the other races believe in putting their race first. The black race is the only race who talk about integration and giving other people a fair chance.
As one of the bloggers mentioned indians only buy from other races when they have no other choice.I mentioned on many occassions indians are intrinsically racist. They destroy societies. They horde money and really do not spend. As a result governements indirect taxation policies do not work and hence you see stagnation in the economy, crumpling infrastructure, social services destroy and all ills in the society. No government could get adequate revenue from indians to sustain a flourishing society.Trinidad & Tobago & Guyana are two cases in point.
Shyprincess you have me disturb.I cannot understand and I do not follow your line of reasoning.I am also wondering if you are indeed black.I have my doubts.Shyprincess if you are black indians will never never hire a black person before an indian person. They do not care what price that indian is charging.Indians want the money to remain in their race and I repeat will NEVER NEVER hire a black person before an indian.Shyprincess how many indians go into black people shops and buy anything.Show me the proof. If a indian shop owner and a black shop owner were selling the same items. The black man’s item was cheaper than the indian’s man item you know what the indians will still buy from the indian store before they buy from the black man shop.
INDIANS PUT RACE FIRST.
We as black people must do the same.Shyprincess your line of thinking that you will allow indians to build your house before bajan or guyanese black is nonsensical, backward and counter productive to the advancement of black peole.
Negroman will never put any race before the black race I am a follower of the late great Marcus Garvey I put race first.

I am glad you are finally waking up to what I was trying to subtly point out to you – which is – if you think at the end of the day black guyanese will side with black bajans against indian guyanese – you better think again.
Sad,but true.Even though indian guyanese will not side with black guyanese against a white bajan,an indian storeowner etc living here in barbados, nor even against a chineese.
Blacks need to be educated again that it is not racist if you love yourself and your race – without thinking that you are superior to any other race.
It tells me we are going to have big,big problems down the road.
Guyanese both black and indians are very devious – but the indians are definitely more treacherous – my experience with themhas taught me this.
I just want you bloggers to watch carefully and see how they operate.
First they come on and pretend to understand what you are saying, they all pretend to agree that people should not remain illegally in another country, then they tell you but cuddear they only want to work and improve their lives.
They might throw in a few sob stories about either how they are treated back in guyana,or in barbados.
Then if they are challenged on something they say,or persist in speaking about deporting guyanese – they accuse you of being white people lackeys – and prefering white people to having them stay in barbados illegally – even though they are black like you.
They have been engaged in every negative activity – whether it is robbing and shooting, prostitution, fraudulently ripping off old, indigent pensioners who all they have is their little old house, they lie and pretend to be masons and carpenters and rip house builders of their money with bad workmanship.
Must I go on – there is so much more that can be said.
Some guyanese come on and say they make a contribution – but you know what I am sure that if this contribution is quantified it will be discovered not to be as big as norman faria and his kind always project.
They have suceeded in driving down wages for bajan workers, there are sites where guyanese site managers are so bold to say they are not hiring black bajans – and you tell that bajans so soft that they can’t block?
That couldn’t happen in Jamaica.
Something got to be down about these illegal guyanese and other illegals – and must be done fast.
Jc what you mentioned earlier about the pimp telling you that the immigration tightening up on his whores coming in to barbados – is what I am hearing – that is,generally the immigration is becoming more professional and strict – and I beleive this has every thing to do with this new DLP administration.
Bajans continue to report persons who are illegal in this country, and don’t break the law by offering them housing or work.
You might soon find yourself in jail.
Fingerprinting at the airport must be implemented NOW.

*** ALERT***
There is a film to be shown either on thursday or next tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Solidarity house.
Bloggers please be aware that this is going to be a completely propoganda piece by one annabelle davis – if she is the person I am thinking of – she is of either indian or white extract.
This film purports to look at the guyanese experience from humanitarian terms.Humanitarian terms is really a code word for ‘completely pro-guyanese slant’.
Bloggers should understand that this Ms Davis is the same female who came on VOB call in programme a couple of months ago and was given latitude by mike browne the producer and david ellis who was the moderator on the first day,and then peter wickham the moderator on the following day.
This lady was so biased claiming that guyanese are so frightened of bajans and purporting to present information which she says she got from the immigration department – which is odd since so far no member of parliament has been able to get this statistic – that is, – the number of guyanese in the country -legal and illegal.
She obviously has not heard about the many, many horror stories about not a few guyanese but a whole lot of them – against bajans, nor about the deception in their claims of being trained artisans and taking poor bajan money and leaving shoddy work, nor their boldness in telling bajans how they hate them and will run them out.
Guess who will be making opening remarks? – yes you guessed it – peter wickham.
CBC has been invited and will be filming the presentation and the remarks by the public.
I WANT ALL BAJAN LOVING CITIZEN TO TURN UP THERE AND NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY PEOPLE WITH FINE WORDS AND THEIR AGENDA AND SPEAK OUT BOLDLY ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO BARBADOS.
They are going to try and trip you up,or they are going to try and portray you as racist – BUT STAND YOUR GROUND.
ALSO BE PREPARED FOR THEM TO ADVANCE THE ARGUMENT THAT THEIR SHOULD BE AMNESTY FOE ALL THE ILLEGALS IN BARBADOS – YOU MUST SAY A RESOUNDING,LOUD NO TO THAT.
What they are asking for is that even though in 1994 under the BLP administration these illegals who were living here for a long time were given amnesty – the situation did not improve – BUT MORE ILLEGALS SINCE THEN CAME IN AND HAVE STAYED HERE FOR YEARS SINCE 1994 – AND NOW THEY WILL WANT TO ADD TO THE BURDEN ON OUR ECONOMY BY HAVING THESE PEOPLE CLOG UP THE HEALTH SYSTEM,THE SCHOOLS,HOUSING ETC.
Even if they pay NIS or Taxes – there is still a great burden on the island water supply, garbage syatem, health facilities, schools etc – who will then be bringing in their aunt, uncle, cousin, and great grandfather and their children.
This is a BIG,BIG,BIG,Public Relations Scheme – designed to win the hearts and minds of ordinary bajans.
This is meant to be the gateway for talks with the government of barbados on a ’sympathy for guyanese basis.’
WHY IS THERE NOT A FILM ABOUT THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF THE GUYANESE IN BARBADOS?
How is it that CBC has not found the time to cover this rising illegal immigration issue but can turn up to hear this bias piece.
I am also outraged that this lady who obviously has the resources to fund this project can put the perspective of the non national guyanese and yet the ordinary black bajan cannot get his view heard on VOB,CBC,THE NATION,BFP – except on Barbados Underground.
David can you do a piece on this?or do you think highlighting it will play into their agenda?
Did you hear the announcement by peter wickham on VOB radio today?

have u never seen indians buying food and such items from as u put it ,the poor black man.Maybe you should open your eyes and ask a few questions, ask the guy cuz by pebbles beach, ask the fish vendors at baxters road, ask the guy who sells fish on bay street on weekends, ask the people in oistins, ask the guys who sell fish cakes and also ask some of the shop keepers around the country side. Some of you say that a indian would buy form his own people even if the same article is cheaper in a black mans store, oh what nonsense and full of shit. You say the indians don;t shop at black boutiques.Have you ever stopped and thought that maybe the they don;t sell the kind of clothes the indians are looking for.Are you saying indians don;t buy shoes and such things from any black owned businesses? Some of yuh all in here keeping noise bout indians buy from their own and such which is a bunch of hogwash yet at the end of it you say that you will buy from only black peole. If you are saying you will buy from you own race yet when the indians do it as you say, you’re ready to keep alot of noise.is this not hypocrisy? The same way u say you’re bajan at the end of the end of the day just like some whites are also, then don;t you feel the same way quite a few indians are second generation barbadians also yet on a daily basis they get treated as doh they r from bombay and guyana, when Barbados has been and will always be their only home.

you think that the people who comment so much on this blog are going to turn up at that film presentation and have to face Wickham? He would tear them to shreds. On this blog they have nuff words but they too frighten to open their mouth where they could be identified. They got about 4 jackasses writing about 90% of these posts and they want the goverment to take them seriously?
The future lies with Barbados and Guyana coming together with the Blacks, indians, whites, chinese, amerindian and everybody!
If wunnuh think that all Bajans think like you then yuh wrong. I black as midnight and Bajan as flying fish and cou cou. Come to the film presentation and open yuh mout if yuh is man or woman!

Thanks JC.
Since I can’t be in 2 places at the same time I would be depending on you to tell me how everything went.
Hope to see it when CBC shows it – which I’m told will be around Independence day.
JC // July 14, 2008 at 3:10 PM
I make no apologies for agreeing with negro man. If an indian sees something that he wants from you he tries to get it at the cheapest price. He has no respect for no body’s produce. Ask the fruit man, ask the fisherman, ask anybody that have dealing with them.
Imagine they come at your house and have the most inferior goods and sell them at triple the price and you talking crap. Moreover, pts you claim that we black people say that we will only buy from one another, you know for a fact that that is not true statement.
We are now trying to teach balck people to support their own; and most of the time they dont support their own.
Indians always support their own and that is a fact so your point…….We need to learn that fundamental point.
Look at Guyana and Fiji and other places and show me the proof that indians have been a blessing for any country.
You talk a load of crap. Black people always support every body they socialise with every one no matter what color. You need to be real!
I am of the opinion that you people are realising that black people are becoming more conscious and refuse to be looked down on.
STUPES

Passin Through South.
Maybe I live in a different Barbados to you.I do not see indians buying small scale or large scale from Black Barbadian Businesses.Show me large numbers of indians lining up at shops owned by black people and making large purchases.
Passin Through South black people are finally waking up and the harsh and bad treatment that the indians, the whites,& chinese are accustom given to us will soon be a thing of past.
You all are not scarce yet.We will not continue to make you all rich to oppress us.
We have a saying BUY BAJAN
the next saying will be BUY BLACK
Fellow black Barbadians do like Negroman seek out black owned businesses
DO NOT MAKE THE INDIANS RICH TO OPPRESS US.
They need us blacks money to survive. We are in the majority use it to our advantage.

JC &Negroman
You notice Anon just didn’t respond to passin down south.
In case you don’t remember he was on this blog before – posting on another thread about indians relationship with blacks – and he had some very nasty things to say about black people.
He might be one of the adam or thani clan or just another indian guyanese – who are becoming very afraid about this slow awakening they are seeing in black bajans.
Thank God some of us were fearless enough to join David at BU and speak out against the direction our country is going in with these large indian and other illegal population.
Negroman // July 14, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Broken Arrow & Trident you are not a black Barbadian but a indo guyanese.I Negroman will be there and will represent myself and a vast majority of BLACK BARBADIANS.We are not afraid of that FREAK Peter Wickham.
Indo-guyanese MUST GO
THER IS NO TURNING BACK.

anon, r u saying that black people can come on here and throw accusations to indians left and right but as soon as a indian comes on and post something then he should not have views or should not express them.I am not afraid to say i posted in the other topics as you said and the same way you have views and you’re treated by indians as you say on an ordinary basis, people of other ethnic group are also treated similarly.I have many black friends who i buy all sorts of items from and contrary to what you say, I (yeah i is a indian) pay more for what i purchase from them than the same black man offers them for their goods.I can call many names of places and individuals from where the indians buy goods, just that you don;t see it happening on a daily basis does not mean that it does not occur. You may be buying from your black businesses in quantities of one or two items while behind the scenes other ethnic groups make bigger quantity purchases and therefore make greater contribuition to those black businesses than you think they ever make.Just because you don;t see it happening on a daily basis does not mean it does not happen
passin through south // July 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM
@jc
the statement i made above regarding some people on here saying they buying from black businesses only and you said it is not true.Well read negromans comments and you will see what i mean.He has said it right through the forum. Also should i say that if i am treated bad by one black barbadian then i should come on here and say all black barbadians are bad? From some of the comments o here that is the conclusion that has been reached. Some people on here are saying since they were treated bad or had issues with one or a few indians then all or majority or bad? am i right or wrong?
passin through south // July 14, 2008 at 5:23 PM
the same way you guys refer to fiji and guyana and stuff… what happens in countries like zimbabwe and parts of africa and stuff. No indians there and still all the problems and not much positives coming out from those regions also.Is it the indian mans spirit causing havoc in those countries also??????
Negroman // July 14, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Passin Through South How about the turmoil in Pakistan.India Sri Lamka you want me to name the rest. How about the conflicts in Europe the break away Russian states and all the conflicts all over the world. Why only chose African countries. All the conflicts in Africa are as a result of colonisation by the Europeans.
Africa is advancing and that scares the non-black world.
WE BLACKS ARE REBUILDING OUR EMPIRE
I WILL ALWAYS ADVOCATE BUY BLACK DO NOT SUPPORT THE INDIAN MAN
Yardbroom // July 14, 2008 at 5:41 PM
Passing through south
You have been on this blog before – on another thread – expressing your contempt for black people, with detailed reasons for our lack of success.
You have now adopted a superior air with the claim – on what basis I do not know -
that a person here “may be buying from black businesses in quantities of one or two items while behind the scenes other ethnic groups make bigger quantity purchases”
Your feeling of other ethnic group’s ability to purchase more, without knowing the persons you are addressing here, apart from them being black…says quite a lot about you, and gives a deeper subliminal message.
Barbadians should be prudent where they spend their hard earned cash…support those who support you and with whom you can have a positive interaction, with respect.
Chris Halsall // July 14, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I personally try to stay out of discussions like this, because I just don’t think they’re healthy, or thoughtful, or useful…
Further, I truly do not understand hatred. It seems like such a short-sighted, and limiting, emotion…
But “passin through south” raises reasonable questions. Specifically: if the Indians are the cause of all evil here in Bim, how do you explain what is going on in Africa?
Do we not all realize that we’re all in this together?
*ALL* of us?
(IMHO) (I know I’m going to regret raising my head on this, but sometimes one must stand up….)
Negroman // July 14, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Chris Halsall I repeat again who about the conflicts in Pakistan politicians being assisinated (Benazir Bhutto) The conflicts in India & Sri Lanka why dwell on the conflicts only in Africa.
That nonsense that only Africa has conflicts will not work.
Chris Halsall and Passin Through South respond.
Chris Halsall // July 14, 2008 at 6:06 PM
@Negroman…
Please, if I may ask, speak to the question of what is happening in Africa. No one is scared of Black advancement. Any enlightened human welcomes it.
@Yardbroom…
*Every* consumer “should be prudent where they spend their hard earned cash”. “Caveat emptor”.
IMHO, the consumer’s choices are their own. They may do as they wish, deal with whom they wish, based upon the options before them. (This is the fundamental basis of free markets.) (And, as an aside, not executing a purchase at all is an option we Bajans would do well better understanding…)
Anonymous // July 14, 2008 at 6:29 PM
chris hasall
You say:”sometimes one must stand up…”
Tell me what are you standing up for?
Have you listened to yardbroom,JC,negroman,david,
jukecheckedeyshirt, technician and others talking about our society and how it is deteriorating due to the influx of a particular group of people?
Have you not listened as we cited examples of what is happening in barbados?
Your response doesn’t surprise me – and frankly I’m surprised at all that you deigned to grace us on this thread with your comment.
There are persons who live with their heads in the cloud (and I don’t know if you are one of them) and whose bread’s buttered on both sides who will tell you:
‘Oh why must you say these things, can’t we all get along?’
Or I truly don’t understand hatred,it seems such a short sighted and limited emotion.
Load of dog shite – that sounds like the educated HOUSE NEGRO to me or the Mulatto man.
All around the world the persons of african descent getting the shitty end of the stick, even from their own – and we have these colin powell types who will always find a way to get along with the oppressor – while his brothers and sisters on the slave plantation smelling hell.
Well I can’t live like that.I dream for the day when my people’s eyes are truly open and they realise that while we must not perpetuate hate against anyone or any group – we must understand that every race thinks somehow they are smarter and superior to us – not that the facts support that – but because WE have allowed them to think this way.
We have patronised every business they open – even if they selling chicken feathers we will buy it – and we will do so at the expense of supporting our own black brother.
We have allowed their children to inter marry our own for the most part though not in every instance – purely on the basis of convenience – while they tell us they don’t like the mixing of the races.
We sell them our land, our houses, our business while they sell us plastic buckets and cotton shirts and rubber slippers.
Check out cheapside market who are the people buying from the guyanese indian vendors because they might get some vegetables 25 cents cheaper – of course it is the black bajans.
It is interesting that during all the time this and other similar debates were raging, chris hasall never found one point raised by the aforementioned persons (ie JC,Yardbroom etc) to be of any merit – but only the rubbish that passing down south had to say today.
So Chris now that you have said your piece you could go back and sip your glas of wine while you discuss the hansard report not being available,or telecom companies in barbados and the like while the natives down here struggle to keep their patrimony.
Yardbroom // July 14, 2008 at 6:29 PM
There is conflict in Africa often in India , Europe and many other places.
However, there is one irrefutable “fact” wherever in the world when there has been a majority population of black African decent later reinforced by Indians. When the population of Indians have reached a sizeable percentage. There has always been trouble between the races leading to violence. History is replete with examples, Trinidad, Guyana, Fiji it “always” happens.
It has nothing to do with hate or racism, people who do not learn from history will continue to make the same mistakes again and again. Common sense must sometimes prevail, it is not always pleasant to hear, but that does not mean it is not the truth.
Anonymous // July 14, 2008 at 6:32 PM
David my post seems to be held in moderation, could you have a look please.
JC // July 14, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Mr. Halsall if you are so interested in ‘the hate issue’ why dont you ask the indians in Trinidad and other places why they give us blacks such a hard time. When we decide to open our mounths we are labeled as racist and all kind of crap.
Why cant we Bajans ask questions like:
If you all illegal immigrants are illegal why dont you all go back home and go through the correct procedure to see if Barbados desires your prescence.
You mean to tell me that any and who so ever will can enter here without argument.
What nonsense is this?
And to pt I beg to differ with negro man on this issue. Bajans buy from indians white people and the list goes on. How many indians buying from poor people and how many white people buy from us bajans on a regular basis ….stupes
I must agree on 1 point with you amd this is when you wrote
(And, as an aside, not executing a purchase at all is an option we Bajans would do well better understanding…)
JC // July 14, 2008 at 6:45 PM
Broken trident you think that because people dont comment on the blogs that they dont read!
You think that I am speaking only on my behalf, I am speaking on the behalf of every bajan who doesn’st have a computer but say every day too much foreigners around here!
I guess you are calling the majority of bajans asses!
Well I dont give a shite what you or peter wickham says I KNOW that foreigners think we are asses!
Chris Halsall // July 14, 2008 at 6:53 PM
@Anonymous…
First off, please let me note that I am writing under my real name. Do you feel strongly enough about your position to do the same?
Secondly, I am “standing up” because I have found this entire debate to be ugly, unproductive, emotional, ill-informed and un-analytic. And, frankly, dangerous! If this continues, we risk the fate of T&T.
Thirdly, yes, I have “listened” to all the positions, and I have found many to be based on emotion rather than fact. Racism rather than thoughtfulness.
I decided to “raise my head” at this juncture because it does not appear that things are calming down (as I had hoped), but instead escalating. And because “passin through south” raised an excellent argument, and I am appreciative of a good argument. (I do note that no one has answered this question, but rather raised counter arguments which distract from same. Any logical person realizes that doing so does not actually counter the argument.)
You mentioned that “of course it is the black bajans” who are buying from the “guyanese indian” vendors in the Cheapside market because they might get a better deal. As consumers, why shouldn’t they take advantage of a better purchasing option?
Truly, Namaste all….
Chris Halsall // July 14, 2008 at 7:03 PM
@JC…
Let me please counter argue: why do “[you] Blacks” give the Indians such a hard time?
@Yardbroom…
Let me please counter argue: how is it that in Canada (specifically, Toronto and Montreal) that large populations of Blacks, Indians, Asians, Whites, Martians, et al, seem to be able to live, work, and *thrive* without cultural hatred?
@Everyone…
Surely we all realize that within twenty years China will be the dominant superpower (with India as number two)?
Will all this infighting do anything for our own advancement, or does it not simply keep us all weak and unstable?
The one thing which has concerned me greatly about this “debate” is that many take a few personally examples of their experiences (and their interpretations of same), and extrapolated it to an entire race. And then state these interpretations are “fact”. This is (dangerous) folly….

Chris halsall
Who cares whether you are indeed chris halsall or john browne?
Does it make your contribution more truthful or significant than mine?
I thought we were dealing with the content of the post and not who the blogger is.
You say you are standing up because you found the argument by others on this subject to be emotional, ill informed and ‘un- analytic’.
Well my good man,I personally have found your contributions here and on BFP to be lacking in substance, unenlightening and full of your self importance.
Want an example?
Like asking David of BU to check to see that you posted using someone name but using your usual I.P. to prove the point that others can post using someone else’s name.
Wow Eureka!
DUH?
Free speech is welcomed as David will tell you,but free speech is not necessary enlightening or educational speech.
I speak for myself when I say I try to avoid getting personal with bloggers – and when I address them it is usually to respond to points theywould have made.
When I find contributions that are not interesting like yours I just move on.
I am not contributing on this site to show how brilliant,or filled with hubris I am – instead I am genuinely concerned and passionate about my country and my people.
Your view that all the other contributors who are anti the illegal immigrants and influx of other etnic groups are emotional and ill – informed – while passing down south flismy argument which he could not back up with any evidence – is sound and an excellent argument – really speaks volume about you.
I just love your notion of self -importance – ie”you decided to step in when you realised things were not calming down”.
wuhloss yuh got me cracking up for truth.
My man you might need your own blog to share your brillance with ours.

seems from your comments that only bajans buying things at cheap side market. While they are buying from the guyanese ,who are the ones buying from the poor black barbadians selling there. Are you telling me you have never seen indians buying produce at cheapside?Nearly all females in my family and alot of their friends make their way down to cheapside on a saturday to buy their produce while alot of the barbadians who talk about helping the poor farmer make their way to the supermarkets.Maybe you should ask the farmers in the country who are the people who actually pay them for their produce and not just beg for a few of this and that or say i will return with the money later and are never to be seen again.Maybe you should ask who are the ones paying the enormous prices for their animals when the year comes when the butcher comes with his cart and offers them next to nothing for it.Maybe you should ask some of these same farmers how much of their friends help them when they are actually in need, for e.g with money to buy feed or transport large items for them at times when some of their own friends see them riding or walking through the rain with bags of feed but never even stop to help them or offer a lift but yet when the produce is ready they are the first to beg.Maybe you should ask the bajan hawkers who it is that buy or order their produce even before they bring it to the market? i got alot to post here as time permits regarding alot of your comments

Passin through south I have loads of time on my hands as well.
I have some queries:
So you are telling me that the Indian stops and gives us (black people)a lift with our feed?
How many Indians are down cheap side on mornings, as much as blacks?
Many persons buy pork and vegetables from persons in the district and PAY THEM as well!
what shite are you talking it is a FACT that indians always give you cHeap ass inferior goods ALL THE TIME!
Any time you see an Indian in Barbados helping a Black man there is an ulterior motive.
I know of Indians who tried to prey on an old person up by me but what they didnt know is that this person has 12 children and realised what was happening they wheeled out of town so please dont make you all selve out to be martyrs.
I know that persons from within neighbourhoods support thier farmers and butchers I live in a village and I dont eat meat but I and many more persons buy from who is selling.
I f Indians do all these things why is Guyana and other countries who have a big Indian population so blasted poor. aaaaanh I cant hear you.
IF YOU CAN TELL ME WHY, I WILL CONCEDE IF NOT just stop it .
The Indians are always making sure to BEG for a reduction in cost and that is a fact!
There will always be loosers in any race. I know I will be crucified for this but the Black race always remains the LOOSING RACE it is the only race who makes excuses for BULL SHIT!

@jc
you’re labelling all indians according to soe of a few you have heard of so likewise i will do such from here on.I am friends with many village people who sell meat and outof the ones i know i can tell you at least 75% have said that they are still waiting for money owed to them from like 2 yrs back and even longer. They say that is the problem with selling among people in your district or to people you know, they always want to trust but cannot find your house when it comes time to pay.I am not referring to just one scenario here,i can relate from many different people in different parishes and districts. How can you have more indians down cheapside compare to blacks when the indian local population is not even 1%, pls b realistic.EVERYONE ask for a reduction is cost,be it buying a car or any everyday matter once you;re dealing with a person on a one on one basis.I am referring to local indians in this scenario because i have never been to guyana or any indian state and your arguements here were based on local indians and i am talking about local indians also. You say cheap ass inferior goods,do you know that majority local black businesses and also local indians buy from the same wholesalers overseas majority of the times,so where as the indians goods are inferior then the others are also, its just the posh way they are marketed. You’re making it seem as doh indians never help a black person so i merely giving you examples where it happens.
JC // July 14, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Listen to me passin tru south; I have one or two indian so called freinds whom I use to buy from all the time then I realised that they never tried to help me in any way when it was my turn they never once tried to give me nothing off or helped me to get any where or do nothing for me.
Recently, my friends bought some brakes you want to know what she said I bought some brakes from the Indian man store and they didnt last too long I now have to go and get some new ones from some company or the other lol! That is like these illegal immigrants who come claiming that they know work when really and truly they dont know shit!
You look at me and talk about statistics please the way you talk you would think that the WHOLE indian population in Barbados helps all the bajans in Barbados. It as if they all come down to Cheapside and buy black people food!
You want to know why you would know our business because we dont know how to tell you the indian man to know your place!
They feel as if you ‘loving people’ can solve our problems so therefore we tell you of our problems and our debts and you come and save the day by buying all the meat.
Yeah right!
You might be nice but not the majority of your kin so SORRY i will not agree; furthermore answer all the questions not just in Barbados but all over why you all (sorry most of you since you buy meat from us and YOU ARE SO NICE lol) have caused countries to be ruined when there is an influx of your ‘bretheren’ plus cause total chaos among the blacks WHO WERE THERE FIRST?
why cant more be like you lol and buy our meat? stupes

A poster Yarbroom posed the following fatuous question to me:
Can you name one country with a majority Indian populatian which has ever facilitated or encouraged a large influx of immigrants of African descent?
My answer is: None that I can think of.
Before I go I would of course note that I cannot think of any country of any majority that is encouraging a large influx of immigrants based on race, African or otherwise. Israel may be an exception and they did airlift the Falashas from Ethiopia to Israel.
On the many comments about the circumstances of the housing and employment of immigrants and the laws governing their entry into Barbados, I would say that is for Barbadians to work out.

For all those who have been forced to leave the promised land and for those for whom it has been made a living hell this is for you. The great Winston Churchill, in saving Britain from Hitler and his Nazis, had to turn to Jamaican Claude McKay for inspiration. Claude was one of us and he wrote this for us:
If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!
FIGHT-ING BACK!

This poem greatly reflects the place Guyanese must get to in order to free ourselves of one oppressive leader after the other. FIGHT BACK WE MUST. I am no proponent of many of Hinckson’s opinions but wrong is wrong. And it is wrong to take away a man’s freedom without just cause. Anyone who heard that press conference can see it for what it was. A man excercising his right to freedom of speech. Yet the PPP administration created another bogus charge just like they did with Benschop.
The pretending a pardon the President freed him. Let us not forget that one cannot be pardoned unless one has been convicted. So what was presented as a Pardon was nothing more than the dismissal of charges for lack of evidence.

Before I can answer the indian man passin down south I got to understand what he is writing.
I don’t know if it is hindi mixed with bajan – but all I seem to get from what he is saying is that his indian female relatives buy from a black vendor or two at cheapside;
and the indian buy the biggest animal from the poor black man – unlike the black bajan;
indians are the ones who buy the poor farmers produce unlike the black bajans who beg for it and or buy it and never return to pay,indians give lifts also are the people who give lifts to these poor farmers when they walking in the rain while of course the black bajan just drive pass;
Now I don’t know about you JC,but I don’t know where to start to respond to this rubbish.
Which indians are you talking about PDS?
So without the support of this 1% you say indian population, black produce farmers, black animal farmers, and on the whole poor black bajans would not survive without the goodwill of these 1% indians?
Is that it?
Dat sounds sensible to you passin down south or chris halsall?
So if you are so generous and free spirited -
tell me why are these blacks not favoured and given senior positions in your company?
Tell me why don’t these indians who say they are second generation bajan indians and consider themselves bajan why don’t they inter marry with bajan blacks freely;
tell me why if an indian girl falls in love with a black man she has to run away with him,and note this is not only here in barbados, but in guyana,in trinidad in surinam – why is this so eh?
Tell me WHERE are these indians who are so freely patronising from black establishments – where are they?
Do they come out at a particular time when no one else is around to buy from these black bajan shops?
You say indians don’t shop from black boutiques because they wear different clothes – what you mean – a long top with a pants – don’t boutiques sell those or couldn’t you tell the black boutique owner want you want and if he/she doesnot have it they can order it?
Is that an impossible scenario?
Man let’s cut the crap – you are talking pure shite – and really my man I ain’t got no more time to respond to your drivel.
Every time you post on this subject it is the same story – that indians who came from the asian sub continent peniless and have now become wealthy through the patronage of the local blacks – believe that these local blacks should some how feel forever grateful that you allowed them to buy stuff from you – which of course was helpful to them – the blacks – more than to you.
Well,well,well very interesting.
I hope bajan blacks taking note – we are getting some important revelations here.

Thanks for telling us about the film by annalee davis – I suspected that was the person who came on VOB twice trying to entrap bajans into some emotional guilt trip.
ME,can you tell us alittle more about the film such as was it a public viewing?
do you know who sponsored it?
did the public react to it?
what was your reaction to it?
I would love to hear some more please.

you think that the people who comment so much on this blog are going to turn up at that film presentation and have to face Wickham? He would tear them to shreds. On this blog they have nuff words but they too frighten to open their mouth where they could be identified. They got about 4 jackasses writing about 90% of these posts and they want the goverment to take them seriously?
The future lies with Barbados and Guyana coming together with the Blacks, indians, whites, chinese, amerindian and everybody!
If wunnuh think that all Bajans think like you then yuh wrong. I black as midnight and Bajan as flying fish and cou cou. Come to the film presentation and open yuh mout if yuh is man or woman!

Thanks JC
Don’t forget give them shite tonight, stand up for your people and make us proud .
You notice that steyandra and passing south never respond to the questions when you ask them about why indians practice not marrying persons of african descent – or don’t integrate into the black society they come into?
They can’t answer when you point out that in their businesses the blacks are at the lowest paying positions in the business and only their indian people get the top positions.
If they so love black people why they don’t marry them freely (and not just one or two running away) with a black man.
As for people like this broken trident creature -all this is really are signs that indians are starting to sit up and take notice that bajans blacks are opening their eyes to their offensive practices.
I hope thompson and his people see what portends for barbados down the road – here we have a white woman annalee davis using money to make a film to support the argument that the illegal indians should stay in barbados and not be reviled for their behaviour.
The comments by passing south only show you what is in the indian heart against black people – that is,that black people should be grateful that they sell them their cheap rubbish.
I think all black bajans reading these blogs need to educate their children about the history of racial prejudice by indians all over the world aginst blacks.
When you look at Kenya and Uganda how the innocent africans allowed them in their countries ,then instead of building up the country and integrating they formed little enclaves and shipped all their profits back to their mother country India.
No integration with the africans – they were just there to sell them their cheap, plastic rubbish.
Look at South Africa the overwhelming majority of indians with very few exceptions if any – all accepted the title of ‘coloured’ as opposed to black – even though they are black – and this was done because they wanted to distinguish themselves from the local black african population – who were suffering severe hardship under the apartheid policy.
Couldn’t these south african indians as a people say we are not going to use the term coloured which gives us better priveleges than those africans who were called black and put at the bottom of the ladder and be in solidarity with our african brothers?
What about Fiji – where these impoverished indian labourers were brought in again by the british to cut the sugar cane – note carefully barbados as we import these indo guyanese to cut our canes (these are not like the vincy or lucians) – these indians in Fiji never mixed with the local fijians, but again they only wanted to open businesses and sell to them not integrate as one people.
Now I don’t know how many of you know fijians but I had a fijian friend – we have lost contact now – but fijians are the most peaceful, loving kind people.
However within a couple of decades the indians decided they must amass political power from the foolish, docile blacks now that they had already gained economic power – and the rest is history.
A valiant, black fijian soldier stood up to them and said no way I prefer to die for my country first – and a coup ensued.Note, there were also some smart fijians earlier on who recognised that the indians were breeding like rabbits and out numbering the local fijians so they put things in place in their constitution which stated that fijians should have control of certain important sectors of society.
I can feel it in my bones that barbados is headed the way of Fiji.I don’t know how soon but what I do know is that we have imported some very racist poor, unskilled indians from Guyana who ahve brought their racist tendencies to barbados and who even though they are not numerically strong are already flexing their racist muscle.
I saw a couple of years back in the 1990s a black guyanese and 2 indian guyanese nearly come to blows on a construction site – over a discussion about how the indians treat the afro guyanese in guyana, and the merits or de-merits of the late forbes burnham.
I really hope the prime minister and other ministers are reading this blog – because they are the people who will decide whether barbados sink or swim.
It is not enough Bajans to shake your head and say ‘these people are something else ‘ and just get on with your life – but you must in a clear, and strong way show that you want to put an end to this looming danger.

I will concentrate on “facts.”
(1) I asked the question: “Can you name one country with a majority Indian population which ever facilitated or encouraged a large influx of immigrants of African descent?” I gave you the whole world to choose from.
You did concede you were not aware of any. I am not at all surprised.
(2) You then added: “Before I go I would of course note that I cannot think of any country of any majority that is encouraging a large influx of immigrants based on race African or otherwise.”
May I inform you that permanent citizenship of Japan is conferred Jus Sanguinis (latin for right blood) You must have an ancestor who is a national or citizen of the state. If you were born in Japan that is not enough. You could have lived there for decades it makes no difference. Japan in the past sought immigrants from South America but only those children of Japanese citizens who had lived in South America were encouraged. It does happen. I am not supporting this view or otherwise it is an example by way of rebuttal to the point you made.
(3) Israel airlifted the Falashas from Ethiopia because after investigation and debate by Israeli scholars it was proved that the Falashas had practised the Jewish religion for hundreds of years even though black and living in Ethiopia. It was a question of “religion.” I do not think Israelies are Indians, but I could be mistaken.
Unlike you, I will simply say you comments are not “fatuous” you are just not as informed as you think you are.
@Chris Halsall
You used Canada as an example of people getting along. Such an example demonstrates you have failed to grasp the issue here.
Canada does not have a majority black population with a later influx of immigrant Indians as the examples I have given eg Trinidad, Guyana and Fiji.
There is no requirement as far as I am aware for commenters to use their own names on this blog, the choice is theirs to do as they wish. You have made a personal choice, which is your right. I attach no significance to it. I neither applaud or condemn it.
This debate is more than about the cost of beans in a supermarket or goods in Swan Street. It is about a country where black people can always feel comfortable in their skins and their children and grand children. It is about history, sacrifices made and a sense of being. It is about trying not to be so magnanimous that your children drink from a cup of bitter gall and are unable to contain the tensions and violence that comes with division.
If Barbadians were “asleep” this blog should have opened their eyes. Some people seem to think Barbados only began thirty years ago and is of their doing…the story started a long time before then.
Satyendra // July 15, 2008 at 8:19 AM
Yardbroom
you really are a most silly and dishonest individual: Is Japan “encouraging a large influx of individuals of African descent (or any other race”? The most notable case of recent memory in this matter involved Alberto Fujimori, the former President of Peru. His right to stay in Japan was not automatic and if my memory is correct there was judicial review. In any event you are wrong about Japanese citizenship being conferred on the basis of jus sanguinis. In Japan people of Japanese descent up to the 3rd generation may enter and live in Japan but citizenship is still subject to the naturalization process. Jus sanguinis is extended by a country to its disapora and usually where members of its disapora are living in hostile countries. If I were to follow your odious attempt at twisting my reference to Irael, I would smugly state (as you did in your transparent mischief) ; I do not think that Japanese are Indians but I could be wrong.
Futhermore, I never suggested that Israelis are Indians. I made the observation that Israel has a policy of encouraging immigration of certain categories of persons which included the Falashas. This category is those of the Jewish faith. Some argue that Jews constitute a race. The Rabbinical Council of Israel has rejected that assertion.
To end this exchange: YOU are a racist of the most dangerous kind. At least Negroman and JC state openly their feelings which may be justified by their experiences. They are not pretending to be anything they are not. I actually do NOT think they are racists but have some unfortunate views based on their experiences. You, yardbroom, with your empty rhetoric, claim to be non-racial but I have satisfied myself that you harbour a deep seated racism justified only in your wicked mind by a self serving but patently ignorant “logic”.

Hear,hear Yardbroom
Well Said!
I hope bajans are reading and digesting carefully and talking to their children and parliamentarians.
If we are not sure what is goin to happen down the road – just watch and see who the white in barbados is aligning with.
Analese davis – white bajan – aligning with the indo guyanese and making a film to defend them – she has never seen the need to defend black bajans in this very public way.
With the exception of richard hoad – who has written in the past about the influx of immigrants in general – no white bajans have spoken out against these large number of people moving into to barbados.
As a matter of fact people like de gap and centipede and others welcome it because to them and the other plantation and construction site owners it represents cheap labout, and trust me an indian will always give better service or productivity to a white man than to a black man, because an indian always feel he should be over a black person and never should a black person be over him.
So they will work for a black man grudgingly until they could get an opportunity to move away.
I am waiting to see if CBC will not do a counter documentary or programme to show the downside of these immigrants in to barbados.
I don’t expect much from people like jewel forde, programme manager at CBC -because these people are only concerned about their middle class status and status symbols.
She or others with influence up at CBC have never initiated a programme about how the 2 races indians and black clash and tensions are created – in places where they have been for decades and decades like guyana, trinidad and surinam.
Therefore the introduction of these very people here will necessarily create the same racial and social tensions.
Is that so hard to do as a current affairs programme? or do they not want to offend their few indian advertisers like Ms RAM,amd Thani etc – see who have the real power people?
Even though if the blacks stop shopping at them we will send a bigger message – but black bajans only talk with their mouth not with their money or their votes.
People like these media types jewel forde, david ellis, dean st hill etc exude no pride in their race,no strong desire to promote and maintain the rich heritage of what our black foreparents struggled so hard for.
Yardbroom my friend,a monster is at our door – knocking – whether he gets in depends on which person gets to open that door.
Negroman // July 15, 2008 at 8:46 AM
Satyendra I am not a historian but my limited knowledge of the subject gives me satisfaction that Yardbroom comments are sound and he is right.
Satyendra I do not believe that I am superior to any other race, however I recognise that the black race is despise by all the other races and is treated accordingly.World history and recent events in Guyana,Suriname & Trinidad & Tobago show me that indians are wicked, deceitful, conniving, scheming and extremely racist especially against black people. This leads me to have a passionate dislike for the indian race.I MAKE NO APOLOGIES FOR SAYING THAT I,NEGROMAN HATE INDIANS.
The indians have nothing but utter contempt and hatred for black people. We must never allow the indian race to out number and dominate us in Barbados. That will be doom for black people in Barbados as it is for black people in Guyana,Trinidad,Suriname and as indicated Fiji and other countries that allowed indians to rise to a level of dominance.
I D O NOT WANT THAT FOR A BLACK BARBADOS.IAM PREPARE TO CURTAIL THAT BY ANY MEANS NECESSARILY.
JC // July 15, 2008 at 9:24 AM
It is indeed a sad day and time in our history when bajans black white or indian have gotten to ‘this sad’ stage in our lives in 2008 when persons who have no RIGHT to our way of life can create such tensions within the society.
Some people have labeled me as racist, xenophobic and have said all types of innuendos about and against me.
However, I know that if a man treats me like a person, I also do the same. It is all about respect for one another.
I as a BAJAN have not been treated with respect when people question my asking why they are so many illegal immigrants in Barbados;
I as a BAJAN have not been treated with respect when persons can be allowed to come to my sweet BARBADOS and question my love for my country.
I as a BAJAN have not been treated with respect when illeagl immigrants can BREAK the law and still be rewarded with citizenship.
I as a BAJAN have not been treated with respect although my great great great grandmother and her siblings have toiled and given up their lives blood sweat and tears to make this dream a reality.
IF BECAUSE I FEEL ALL THESE THINGS AND WILL BE CONSIDERED RACISTS…….
Well I think I take that as A COMPLIMENT!
Chee thanks!

I had gone on doing other things this morning after reading the post by one satyendra – and then it suddenly dawned on me – that satyendra posts are clear examples of how indians operate.
In Sunday when he came on to respond to the bloggers – he was all so docile, and appearing to be reasonable and just seeking answers.
Up to today neither he nor passing south responded to any queries as to explanations on indians hatred and scorn of african descendants,or why they vehemently refuse to allow their child to marry these black people, and why they only support their own in business etc.
No answer – not sunday, not yesterday not today.
However they kept piling on the ‘we are so nice to blacks’ rubbish as a distraction,or look what happens in africa as opposed to what happens in Fiji,Kenya,Guyana or trinidad.
However as soon as satyendra got some support via passin south and chris halsall to a lesser extent – man he started to show his true nature – calling yard broom comments ‘fatuous’ – a ‘most silly and dishonest individual’;a ‘racist of the most dangerous kind’,harbouring a deep-seated racism justified in his wicked mind by a self serving and ignorant logic’.
WOW.
This is the man who told David/BU only sunday that he was only here seeking some answers, and that he understands how bajans might feel anxious seeing some many people flood their country.
I mean to say this man is referring to our blogger Yardbroom, who has always tried to be so balanced and inoffensive although forthright in his views.
What made the change in satyendra.
May I humbly proffer an explanation – that once he realised that he had another indian or 2 supporting him here on this blog, and he was still anonymous ( because he would never say this to a black bajan face) – he revealed his true self.
This is just a foreshadow of how indians behave.
Once they feel suffciently strong in numbers or in economic or political power – then their hatred of blacks come sailing through.
Bajans cannot say they were not forewarned.
Hants // July 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM
I have lived in Toronto for 40 years and have a theory as to how the various races get along.
They have their “areas” where they live based on race and most importantly the predominantly white police force enforces law and order. The high living standards of Canada makes it easier for prople to”get along”.
Each ethnic group celebrates their culture without excluding the general population.
We Caribbean people have Caribana.
The difference is that Barbados is a densely populated 90% black country and Black people must feel an “ownership” of the country which has been built on the backs and heads of their cane cutting and loading ancestors.
White Barbadians also can claim Ownership based on their history although they come from a power base they built in a historically oppressive manner.
Immigrants should treat Barbados with respect and understand it is a privilage to be allowed into a country where you were not born.
A Barbadian who takes “ownership” of and defends the legacy started by his Great, great, great grandparents is just doing what is right for him even if it offends others of a different race.

Broken Trident I was at this forum that you dared me to be at and I was unimpressed. I didnt get the oppotunity to say anything due to time and I must tell you the film was very biased.
It dealt with immigrants who claimed that they were legal but the immigration gave them a hard time and the chances they were willing to take; no body tried to think of ways in rebuilding Guyana. It was the nasty things we bajans do to GUYANESE!
It was very one sided there were persons such as a Clarke from the UWI who spoke on the positives of this CSME but at the end of his speech I could not understand shit of what he said (thank god for the words to the bottom of the screen). Imagine, someone who knows nothing of Barbados speaking on my behalf of all the POSITIVES THAT COULD BE GAINED NO ONE DEALT WITH THE insurmountable negatives which are being derived from these guyanese. Moreover Norman Faria asked for the media to be sensored ha ha ha! It was hilarious,.
joel Forde a well known journalist was my highlight and she said most of the things that I wanted to say.
They refused to deal with the racial issue! No matter how some persons tried to get them to deal with this topic they blatantly refused,
Ricky Singh was funny is hell trying to make it seem as if he was a CARIBBEAN MAN that was a laff talking about the black man is this and that didnt buy it for shite!
I was glad I attended this forum; I personally think that we bajans must not give up on this serious issue.
Why the intellectuals of the world think that they know what is best for us!
Oops and guess who were the majority of persons there ha ha ha
WHITE PEOPLE!
Wait till thy take over their houses!
David dont let them sesor you please they are trying hard doh!

Did you say jewel forde from CBC said all the things you wanted to say?You mean publicly?
What were some of these things JC.
Did you recognise any of these white people JC,or did you hear from anyone who they were?
Did the blogs come up ?
Did any of the black people who were there have anything to say?
Did any white people speak, were they bajan whites and what did they have to say?
Did jewel forde from CBC say if she was going to counter the bias of that film with another programme?
What was peter wickham’s contribution and finally;
Negroman and anyone else did you go and what are your thoughts?
Broken trident and arrow // July 16, 2008 at 12:08 AM
I went to the film presentation too. It was piss poor in my opinion. It really did not address the real concerns in any kind of informative way. It was a set of cliches and the usual bs that so called intellectuals like to engage in. The Davis woman was out of her depth, she didn’t seem too bright. She didn’t understand the woman who made the point that one should give the source of statistics used. The same woman made the point that it was only whites and indians that had thoughful and positive comments while Blacks were the poor migrants being unfaired. Thank God for massa (i being sarcastic)!
Norman Faria is a real twit for calling for the blogs to be controlled by the authorities. He does the Guyanese more harm than good. There were a lot of white people but they were not in the majority but who cares?
I left early so I did not hear Singh but I thought you guys would be up front and hot, what happen?
JC // July 16, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Broken trident there was no need since your arguments were weak and YOU LEFT EARLY or you would have realised that many people wanted to have a say but due to time some people could not say anything!
Bajan people are onto you people we are not backing down for shite. i saw a lady embrace Jewel Forde she was commenting and saying that she was not Xenophobic but have some true concerns and she is SCARED! Very scared!
Norman faria wanted to hog the show and surprisingly peter wickham was not VICIOUS that is why to I think people were more calm!
JC // July 16, 2008 at 12:26 AM
The most hilarious part of this circus show was this young lady who claimed that bajans were ungrateful and listen to this
They did’t deserve these things; she claimed that she knew it was going to be a burden. but, so what. we dont deserve these things!
She is an educated dunce and that is the truth!
Peter Wickham claimed that if there was no free movement there would be no more jobs for him!
Bloggrs we know that Peter is well paid but what about those who are not being paid anymore because of these illegal immigrants?

I may be wrong but I think Broken Trident was using reverse physcology to goad us into going to the film and make our voices heard.
Reading his comments tonight brought me to that conclusion.
JC did Jewel forde say when she is going to show the film if at all.
I don’t think that rubbish should be shown on MY T.V.
Broken trident and arrow // July 16, 2008 at 1:23 AM
Look I tired and going to sleep. Anonymous you half right. I really don’t like some of the comments about indians. I’ve met some bad ones and believe it or not some good ones. I really don’t care if an indian want to marry me or not (but I loove my dark, big behind woman…) I don’t need to hate them but that is me! I am against illegal immigration and that is the key issue. It is true I wanted people to come and speak out and get this issue in the open instead of keeping it on the blogs. Tonight everybody was so polite, nice and hypocritical. True there wasn’t anything to discuss anyway.
Negroman // July 16, 2008 at 2:26 AM
I was unable to attend because of other engagements and like the rest I waited for JC’s report. It is not surprising that the film was rubbish and I thought so.It is not surprising that a whole lot of white people attended. They have their agenda and it does not include anything positive for us blacks.
JC I have a query How many indo guyanese attended?
This ploy by Annalee Davis,Norma Faria and the whites in Barbados to gain the sympathy of the majority of us blacks in Barbados will not work.We are not educated to be fool by a bunch of clowns.Black Barbadians recognise a disaster is looming and we are going to insure that it will not explode and destroy the progress that we blacks have made in Barbados in the last forty years or so.
The whites, the Indians, the Chinese will face the wrath of black Barbadians in a way that those people will never expect from us.All the signs are there. It must be noted that all classes of blacks are expressing the same views on this immigration issue. It is not a few reactionary blacks that are discussing this issue but all including the intellectuals, the professionals, and the average person.
Blacks are finally waking up and this will spell trouble for the other ethnic groups.
Remember the 1937 riots it was poor uneducated black workers that agitated. The few middle class educated blacks got involved and the rest is history.
It seems history is about to repeat itself in Barbados again.
We live in relative peace in Barbados for the last sixty years or so with the few white people, the few indians and the other minor ethnic groups. We are not going to allow that to be disrupted by the humbugs from Guyana the despicable indo guyanese.
WE DO NOT WANT THE INDO GUYANESE IN BARBADOS LEAVE NOW.
Broken trident and arrow // July 16, 2008 at 8:04 AM
I add to get this one to negroman before I rush off to work. I was just talking on the phone to a friend that was at the flim last night and apparently some black guy with an accent got up and said that Barbados is NOT a Black country, never was and never will be! I didn’t hear this as I left early but maybe JC can confirm. My friend also said some woman said that crime increasing because the indian men getting the black women pregnant and the boys on the block aint getting no woman! people does talk some things.

I am glad that at least you paying attention to the negative impact of illegal immigration.
However don’t ignore the negative impact on the influx of indians in the society.
History is full of examples of how these people who pretend at first to apprecaite persons of african descent – ususally for selfish, devious reasons – and then as soon as they get what they want – then their true nature comes out.
Please don’t adopt the attitude well I met a few bad ones and a few good ones so I just get on with my life – you need to study their behavioural pattern of this group of people and understand that history cannot be wrong – wherever they go where there is a majority african population – the society is worse off and not better in the long run from their coming.
Their ultimate aim is to dominate all persons but particularly persons of african descent – because they see us as weak, and as a people who don’t teach our children as they teach theirs – about the other races – and why they should not inter marry with others.

The ignorance displayed here about the lack of understanding regarding hindus and hinduism in general is absolutely astounding.
Folks have you had time to even sit and think what it is you are saying?
If you really really want to solve diversity issues do some reading and try to understand your perceived enemies.
Here is some advice find a Hindu you can approach tell them how you feel and have a good discussion you and both the person you are speaking to may learn a lot.
