BU is saddened to learn of the passing of the late Prime Minister David Thompson MP QC,. He died about 2.10 AM (23 October 2010).
We join all Barbadians in extending sincere condolences to his family – wife Mara, mother Margaret Knight, children and close family members.
In this moment of sorrow the Lord I’d in our midst and consoles us with His word. Month eye has seen nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him. Blessed are the sorrowful for they shall be comforted. Into your hands O Lord, we humbly entrust our brother. In this life you embraced him with your tender love and opened to him the gates of heaven. Condolences to his family. Just know that his soul has moved onto the next level of existence, travelling onward to learn more and do more.
It is Barbados’s loss, his earnestness to do well, much was done in a short time.
We must now ask this quality of all our leaders and represenatives, to do their best for our country.
Even in his passing he brought dignty to Government and attmepted to smooth out the transition before he departed.

It is sad but may his soul rest in peace and may his family remain strong.
That a light that shone so brightly; is prematurely extinguished, is a deep loss to the people of Barbados. Men of worth are sometimes only acknowledge when they walk no more beside us.
On Tuesday, 15 January 2008, I wrote on the DLP blog “We are voting for more than a new Government, we are voting for a way of life, honesty, decency, integrity and moral values. We are voting for the type of Barbados, our founding fathers of Independence envisaged. We should not let them down, we must carry the torch forward, if not for us, for our children. It is the Democratic Labour Party, led by David Thompson, who can make that change, and I earnestly hope they are given the opportunity to do so.”
May you rest in Peace Mr. Thompson, a family man, a politician, and a friend of the people. . . one of our greatest sons.
He will surely be missed. Gone but not forgotten. Continue thoughts and prays for his loved ones and for the nation.

It is indeed a very sad day for our island, I am very sad as most of Barbados is over the death of our beloved Prime Minister David Thompson.
He was a person to look up to, to adore and one to learn from, I have lost a sincere friend but Barbados and Barbadians have lost its most loyal and ardent supporter a man that stood for all that was good and all that was right in this nation.

Prime Minister David Thompson has left this mortal coil for greener pastures. Tears come to my eyes as I send my deepest condolences to his wife and three children, and to those who considered themselves his friends and admirers.
I met the Prime Minister for the first time at the beginning of this year (seems like yesterday) at Ilaro Court where he graciously received me to accept a Nyam Jamaica book and to hear my plans for a similar book on Barbados. I felt I had known him all of my life. He not only endorsed the book but from time to time, even in his illness, managed to encourage me to move forward with it – he even told me that when I knocked on doors and got no response, to knock again until a crack opened, and then push and to be ready for when the door became ajar and for those behind would then understand what I was doing and why. I do believe, like Barrow, this was one man who loved his country and the rest of the Caribbean. I prayed he would overcome this cancer of his as I knew he had so much more to do and wanted to do. My deepest condolences first to his wife, three children and to the people of Barbados. I believe Prime Minister Thompson deeply loved this island. Another beautiful mind gone. Rest in peace Sir.
And now hopefully his family and friends will be allowed the peace they require to mourn his passing and feel his spirit surround them before the political gurus start their disgusting in-fighting over taking over the helm…we have had months of disgraceful behaviour that was tantamount to greed…we have had polls that basically could have been only detrimental to his spirit almost claiming him dead before his time…we have seen how the political wheels really turn at their worst. May this now be put in the past and a new Barbados in his memory begin. Sadly, I doubt it right now…and cannot even imagine what horrors are going on behind closed doors at this moment.
I would like to see a political Barbados now emerge that is really for the people and not for themselves.
May our Prime Minister rest in perfect peace. May his faith be a beacon for all of us.

Bonny is hurting and crying. These posts are making me really emotional. Can’t help but cry. My son woke me at around 3:30 this morning with the sad news and I haven’t shut an eye since. I am really hurting inside. I feel sorry for his children especially because my dad passed almost 35yrs ago and I still get all emotional on Father’s day, Christmas day and on his birthday. He was my mom n dad after my mom passed and left 12 of us for him to raise. I was only 9yrs. He was a wonderful man.
David’s passing though inevitable is still a painful blow. I will forever remember that handshake at George Street on elections night.

I have seen Mr. Thompson on numerous occasions but never spoke to him at any length as he was my father’s friend and not mine. I had just called my uncle who was helping him get some projects in place before the worst happened not 45 min. ago to ask after him and received the news that he had passed. Having read these touching tributes especially those comparing him to Barrow, I find myself wishing that I had made an effort in those days to get to know him. Politics is a dirty business by its very nature but it is the obligation of a politician, at the very least to do his dirt FOR the people not at their expense. It seems Mr. Thompson was a man who refused to get dirty and instead took a brush and some soap to it. God bless him for that. I live in America as I have most of my life but I will always treasure the near decade I spent in Barbados during my 20′s. It was when I really learned what life, kindness, brotherhood and hard work was really all about. Reports from home these days are not good. All my family seems to think Barbados has lost her way and I wonder if a small part of this tremendous grief all Barbadians feel is because it seems we have lost one of our last chances to get Bim back on track. Barbados is a magical place, we have our faults, our fights and our problems but when it counts we pull together strong. In this great man’s memory I hope that Barbados will have a”Renaissance” and treasure a way of life and society that is disappearing into the endless materialism of the modern world. That shared strength and love is the allure that brings people from all over the world to our shores. It’s all we really have of any value. God Bless and speed his soul on its way, Soothe the pain of those he leaves behind and always continue to bless Barbados.

“I know many of us uphold the cliche that God works in mysterious ways. However, those of us who really believe in the supreme sovereignship of our Almighty God, will understand that He placed David Thompson as our Prime Minister in January 2008, already knowing that He would take him from us in October 2010.

For all of us who offered tributes to David Thompson, we must now be of resolve, to live out his legacy and dream of peace and kindness to each other. He worked in an untiring manner, to provide each Barbadian, with a regional and geo-global future, that would have catapulted Barbados into regional and even serious global recognition. David was a man ahead of his time, a man incapable of an inelegant act. He was in essence, personified by “longfellow, when he said, the heights by great men reached and kept, was not achieved by sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upwards throught the night.” We must be mindful, that the bible speaks of Faith, Hope and Charity. The bible says of the three, charity is the greatest of them, for charity extends beyond the grave, through the boundless realms of eternity.

Hi “permres”, believe me when I tell you that ALL of us in Barbados and I mean including those of us on the other side of the political fence, were deeply saddened by Mr.Thompson’s illness. We now feel even worse at his passing.
At a time when we are being exhorted towards unity, to cool political fervour out of respect for Mr.Thompson’s memory, and because it is the correct and decently human thing to do, I do not believe you or anybody else, should be using that sort of emotive language, such as the excerpt above from your posting.
I do not know what “evil forces” you speak of, but clearly someone could easily misconstrue what you saying and take these so-called “evil forces” to refer to the opposition party. I really do not know what you mean!
Please speak with more sensitivity and decorum. Couch your language in a way that you do not unnecessarily inflame political passions at this time. Let’s just give thanks for his short, but productive life, instead of going overboard.

Now they were a few other posters to this blog and none of them took her to task for her comments with one suggesting that it was not very clear to whom she was referring.
Perhaps the strength of the late Prime Minister can/will be measured in the decisions which he made in the days and weeks leading up to his death. From his public utterances regarding his health he obviously knew the serious of his illness and possible death. In the months and years to come his final decisions will say alot about the man.

I am now getting over a terrible flu and now this. I have a splitting headache. Never thought that his death would hurt like this. I feel terrible David. I am so sorry for his little ones. The BU household feels your pain.
The day has been difficult for us as well.
David was not unfamiliar to some members of our household.
The fact that he has left such a young family behind brings the greatest sadness of all.
It is no secret that he had been at the forefront of the need to focus on building strong families.
We all remember his Families First Campaign project and his desire to build a society by shifting away from the narrow focus on the economy.
Take heart from the maturity with which the government has transitioned leadership to Stuart.
Let us who live perpetuate his legacy by continuing to build on what he has started.
As we continue to uphold the Thompson family, new PM and government in prayer, a query remains. Has any other country, outside of an election, ever had a change in the leadership of the two main parties in the same week?

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late PM David Thompson. Our nation has lost a good citizen and public servant. May he rest in peace.
Today has again left me with feeling of great despair, same as I felt last year, at the death of a close relative. All the time our PM was sick, I was going through all the emotions and the pain. I feel the pain of separation, his wife and children have felt today. My heart goes out to them, the DLP family and those closest to him. Is time a healer?, still wondering, but the despair does lessens.
God has his plans for each of us, but even with our faith we still wonder why a man of great intellect, strength and knowledge should be taken so soon.
After listening to his last speech again tonight, I think of the words of John…. “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”
God giveth and God taketh…., but is so hard to accept.

I recently lost my dad to prostate cancer. He was a supporter of the Democratic Labour Party form its inception, both he and my mother who is eighty years and not doing too well either. He was eighty three years old.
Washington – Barbados prime minister David Thompson died Saturday at age 48 of pancreatic cancer, the state-run Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.
Deputy Prime Minister Freundel Stewart was sworn in as Thompson’s successor hours after his death.
In Washington, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said: ‘Barbados has lost a leader and the nations of the Americas have lost a friend and valued partner. Prime Minister Thompson was a champion for democracy and justice in the Caribbean and an advocate for wider prosperity and opportunity throughout the region.’
Thompson became the island’s sixth premier in 2008 after leading his Democratic Labour Party to victory.
The third of six children, Thompson was born in London on December 25, 1961. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
It is with deep sadness and regret that we have learned of the
passing of the Honorable David Thompson, Prime Minister of
our beloved country. Mr. Thompson has truly served Barbados
and indeed the wider Caribbean with distinction. As an avid
sports fan and an ardent promoter of the value of investment in
youth, Mr. Thompson has given much support over the years, to
the furtherance of our sports and cultural industries.
The Chairman, Board, Management and staff of the National
Sports Council and the entire sporting organizations in
Barbados, we are very grateful for the support which his
government has given, as they have sought to improve both our
human and physical sports capital.

Surely Barbados can take pride in producing a leader such as this, whose service to his people and his nation was one of servanthood. The pain, grief and regret over this loss must be balanced with the satisfaction and pride that he put in a century worth of work in the 48 years he spent on this earth.

Today on the first Sunday after Mr. David Thompson’s passing, we know that at times when darkness surrounds us; we seek that little candle of light which brings us hope.
Can we as a people, despite the burden a death delivers to us, not be calm within ourselves, as those we loved so dearly would wish. Can we be less selfish, less greedy and banish the idea that untold wealth brings unlimited happiness.
If we can, as a people, that candle flickering in the distance can be transformed to a beacon of light, which will illuminate our way to a prosperous and life changing dawn. May the “ordinary” citizens of Barbados, yes the “ordinary” citizens be victorious in this new chapter in our history.
May comfort be brought to his wife Mara, young family and relatives. I wish each day may manifest, through his legacy, the stature of the man we were privileged to call our Prime Minister.

A key learning of public relations is to effectively communicate to your audience.
Her message seems to be divisive with a public she should be wooing in the present circumstances.
Sometimes it is better to ignore ignorance when it manifests itself.
One can support a political party of choice but not at the risk of compromising someone’s professional ethics.

It is with profound sorrow and grief that I acknowledge the passing of the Late Prime Minister, The Right HON. David Thompson, my friend and neighbour. Many persons will never know the David Thompson that we in the Sanford/Mapps community were privilege to experience. David was a very down to earth young man and this also goes for his entire family. I remember the many conversations we had and even though we differ on many occasions, we would always remain close friends. When David became ill, our relationship got closer and we regularly exchanged e-mail messages as his health deteriorated. He liked his blackberry and hence I would always expect a response from every e-mail I sent. I recognised a spiritual side of David that grew stronger ever time we communicated. I believe that David was preparing himself for the life beyond this, therefore I am not worried about his future. I don’t believe in what some people call “untimely death”, I believe David is called to higher service, therefore I would remind you of the words the Apostle Paul wrote to his friend Timothy ” the time of my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finish the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of rightousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to me on that Day, and not only for me but also to all who have loved his appearing. To Mara and those beautiful children, the entire community will be there for you, call on any of us as usual and we will help in anyway possible. To the children, your Dad was a good man and though he is no longer with you physically, I’m sure his spirit will continue to protect you. Weep if you want to but remember he told you life goes on BE STRONG and BE POSITIVE
Mara, you will always be a special person to us, this Sanford/Mapps community will help you to get over this hurdle in your life. May God continue to Bless and GUARD YOUR FAMILY.

@Islandgal246. Can’t find anything about Elvis, but it was written by music legend Tom Paxton. There is surprisingly little about this work available online. However, my information as to how it relates to John F. Kennedy comes from an imperfect memory of over 30 years ago when I read the sleeve of the Nana Mouscouri recording. As I say, my memory is imperfect on that, but I seem to recall that Andy Williams recorded it as a tribute to Kennedy and sung it at one of the events surrounding the Kennedy funeral. I cannot find any confirmation on the web on it, however.
I don’t know much about barbados history but I know the Hymn – Safe In the Arms of Jesus would be fitting for the beloved former Honorable Prime Minister, none other than David Thompson.

I love Nana Mouskouri too! I saw her in live performances only FOUR times. Even if she sings the same songs, I always went to see her when she came. Beautiful voice, excellent phrasing, great sensitivity and tone. Her singing is almost orgasmic!

Re “Outward bound” this reminded me of a really beautiful final farewell, people in the North of India perform for their loved ones. The make small boat out of the rushes that grow by the river in which they then place the ashes of their loved ones. The priest or elder who knew the deceased would recite some verses , family members would have a bath in the river and allow the boat to start its “outward bound” journey.
My computer crashed,therefore I was unable to extend condolences to the family of our dearly departed former Prime Minister David Thompson . I do so now with heartfelt sympathy from my family.
