EIGHT PERMANENT STAFFERS have been severed as part of a restructuring exercise at Starcom Network Inc.

The across-the-board changes, which took effect today at the broadcast media entity, have been attributed to the current economic climate.

In March 2009, the company also terminated staff as 23 people were sent home from the Nation Group of Companies, of which Starcom is a member.

The Health Minister needs to remind himself that what goes around, comes around.

During the 2008 campaign, they egged on their supporters to spread the gossip by giving the impression that the BLP politicians were all corrupt and that all they had accomplished were ill gotten gains. Hence the integrity legislation that was only an election gimmick.

Well, they have only been in power for three years and all you can hear in the cocktail parties is who is amassing more wealth than the other.

It is sad but politicians need to be honest and not to cast aspersions on each other’s character because look how soon into the DLP administration that we are hearing all these whispers. Remember how they smeared Noel Lynch, Owen Arthur and his former wife, Rommel and Gline Clarke to name a few, oh they had a field day and encouraged their supporters to spread the gossip.

Now that the talk is out there on them, the minister crying foul about how once a black man has a certain type of wall house or drive a particular vehicle, he got it by foul means. You all did not think so when you were telling the lies on the BLP. Now you know how it feels to be accused!

Remember how the late David Thompson went on about overseas accounts and would not produce any evidence! Anyway, he dead now!

An embolus not only prevents the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, but also decreases blood supply to the lung tissue itself, potentially causing lung tissue to die (infarct). A pulmonary embolus can cause severe chest pains.

2010-12-30 – Barbados Today

Minister of the Environment Dr. Denis Lowe is in the Intensive Care Unit of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Barbados TODAY understands he was rushed there today in critical condition. Lowe missed the Budget presentation on November 22, because he was very ill, said well placed sources. Minister of Health Donville Inniss confirmed Lowe’s hospitalisation and noted he could not say much about his condition at that time. He did say that he was going to visit his Cabinet colleague this evening. Sources also explained that it appeared he was is suffering from a pulmonary embolism — a blood clot in the lungs.

Well placed sources told Barbados TODAY that Lowe had lost a lot of weight and had not been out and about in recent times but he did attend the two last Cabinet meetings. Lowe had disclosed to close friends and relatives that he had serious issues with his lungs. The weight loss is attributable to the fact that one of the body’s vital organs, in this case Lowe’s lungs, was under attack. It is understood that the in spite of his illness the minister was still doing work related to the portfolios he holds, which also include Water Resources and Drainage. Well, I aint Dr.GP, I am an igrunt, but a pulmonary embolism, if it is that, is VERY serious indeed, it is a blood clot in the lung, to my untrained understanding.

As for ‘A pulmonary embolus can cause severe chest pains. (DS)” —–And a lot more!

Here from Mayo Clinic :”Prompt treatment of pulmonary embolism is essential to prevent serious complications or death.

Medications

■Anticoagulants. Heparin works quickly and is usually delivered with a needle. Warfarin (Coumadin) comes in pill form. Both prevent new clots from forming, but it takes a few days before warfarin begins to work. Risks include bleeding gums and easy bruising.

The thing is, if he has been ill from November and is still has to be admitted to the ICU, that may indicate that the issue is not under control, which is not a good sign. It may indicate that the blood thinners or efforts to eliminate the clot thus far, have failed.

What we have here is an allegation made by the ‘Source’ which provoked David Ellis to ask Minister Inniss the hard question. He issued a denial which BU has highlighted and provided audio link to same. BU noted Inniss’ response which was similar to Barney’s when he found himself in a similar situation i.e pulling the Black man card

As a side comment you must be aware our laws do not make it possible to determine who are the shareholders in companies. A case of his (Inniss) word against the ‘Source’.

Fran summed it up well. Unlike traditional media both sides can contend even if we admit the discussion can be robust at times.

I listened very carefully to the David Ellis interview with the Minister of Health yesterday. We are both legal Permanent Residents and my wife has just tried to collect
prescribed drugs for hypertension at the Knights Oistins branch and was told (contrary to the Barbados Drug Service website) that they were not free of charge.
I think the Minister has to clarify this situation of have the Barbados Drug Service website corrected, in indeed the information is incorrect.

Weight loss is not a hallmark of Pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism is an acute event. The Minister has been ailing for sometime, if as a result of his condition he was immobilized or his mobility was reduced then this may have facilitated a DVT leading to a Pulmonary embolus.
Speculation at this time is very typical of the Barbadian mindset and it should not be encouraged!!!!

Can someone check in the registry and see who are the shareholders/ directors of the Sparman clinic? I understand the electrical wiring in the Sparman clinic is all messed up and there are many who are asking how did the T&CP and the GED gave permission for this clinic to open in the first place when the placed is a fire hazard. Do you know there are no “built as” electrical circuitry drawings for this “20 million dollar” establishment? Once again Sparman tries to fool the public with a lot of pomp and show and when one looks under the surface the true quality of the product is revealed. I want to know which GED inspector(s) passed this project? I also want to know if this person was pressured by a Minister or received some sort of largess from Sparman? I know that when Sparman reads this, and I know he does, he is going to hit the roof because this information was never meant for public consumption.

I for one and others, have based our comments on Ishmael’s suspension purely on the facts as presented, his letter mainly, which we understand was the basis for his suspension, or were there other reasons?

Never once have I commented on any matter other than his suspension, on the basis of the letter (ridiculous though such action was).

So, you attempt to paint all with the same brush indicates and attempt to subvert and stop free speech, even that done with responsibility.

Blogs do allow unedited speech, that is why most of us have BRAINS to decipher accruate from inaccurate, we do not need nor wish comment deciphered by an editor in a publishing company that relies on clients and advertising.

The term Diotrophetic is one I coined when doing my DMin.
If you read 3 John 9-11 you will read about a man called Diotrophes- who loved to have the preeminence in the church. According to Collosians, only one person has the preeminence in the church- Christ.

Just as a person with diabetes is a diabetic, a person with the character of Diotrophes is Diotrophetic. How ya like ma?

I am a lover not of mens balls- but I love to mock the priest whom Bush Tea says have balls, and the other idiot he called the “bar raiser”. However, in both of his interactions of the silly stupid sacerdote with the doctors, he has been found to have atrophic testes……..but in his brain.

He seems to have a new disease. Just as a dermoid cyst of the ovaries can have ectopic tissue such as teeth and hair. I believe that the priest has testicular tissue in his brain.

As for verity, we are very lenient at BU. We tend to allow puerile, petulant, pithy, posts. You can not engage me on any subject…………..but I will continue to edify the BU folk on things medical in an unbiased and balanced way.

In my 36 years in medicine I have not met a priest attempting to run a hospital. IT IS STUPID!

One wonders why a man who has been flushed by the Hospitals in Tobago and Anguilla is running down the QEH.

One wonders why the dummies i the DLP can not advance health care to the periphery of Barbados, even with the requisite advice?

One wonders why donville dexter dolores and the diotrophetic dunce suspended Ishmael and had to run back to get him when the attempt at telemedicine and low tech patient centered health care failed?

The MOH has not addressed this matter at all, he has confidence in his board, he said. The doctor is recalled and he still does not say anything, who is the minister? The minister has not answered the questions raised. Did he or did he not called Dr Lewis and asked for the patient to be transferred to Sparman’s clinic? Was Dr Sparman allowed into the STAT room demanding the patient to be transferred to his clinic? Who called Dr Sparman and the MOH? These are legitimate questions that need answers not the usual DLP spin.

The MOH deflected the question by telling David Ellis that as soon as a black man has a certain size wall house or drive a particular car etc, etc. The old tired rhetoric. Again I am not questioning the MOH’s wealth, I have no problem with what he has accumulated, good for him!! David would not have expected the MOH to say, yes I own shares in whoever’s company. But he should have followed up with … what about a family member????

I agree, from the time I read that post I thought the same but I try to be fair and dont ascribe motives to anyone.

However, the arrogance came through as though…….. look how Inoballed David Ellis with my poor black man comment. Throw him off from asking me anything else or how dare you, David.

Every time there is a discussion on the MOH, people say he is very arrogant… I dont know if he is but it comes over that way.

I well remember soon after the DLP won the elections, during a Tuesday debate when they were fumbling through (as they still are doing) debating some bill, Mia Mottley got up on a point of order and offered some suggestions. The MOH jumped back up and said…..we aint want to hear anything from wunnuh, wunnah had wunnah time, now is we time and we gine do things to suit we. Then Chris Sinckler jumped up after in his contribution and said…… wunnuh had 14 years and we aint want to hear nothing from wunnuh.

Asking Dr. Georgie Porgie to diagnose Dr. Lowe via this blog is NOT the same as telemedicine.

The difference is that Dr. GP’s doagnosis will NOT be used to treat Dr. Lowe.

Dr. Lowe will be treated by the capable hands-on doctors at the QEH.

Dr. GP’s medical contributions to this blog have helped to educate us all.

As you would have figured the slides presented were taken from persons who had to be planted soon after . Most likely the dear doctor has not been so seriously afflicted as he is still with us.

We should all pay attention to the things that may give rise to these maladies. Thats the real lesson of these slides.

There have been men who went home on retirement and spent to much time in the recliners given to them as “a going home ” present and they soon literally “went home.”

Around this time of the year many years ago we admitted an elderly lady who had been actively tilling the fields all year. She caught a cold as her annual vacation from the plantation fell due, and took to bed. When she was admitted, we soon diagnosed her as having leukemia, but it was the pulmonary embolus that brought her to the hospital that killed her….. not the cancer.

Of course I dont know anything about the goodly doctor’s case, but he might have been ill otherwise, for an other wise relatively simple manner and then developed a DVT and an embolus as a result of his immobilisation. Thats quite possible.

The medicine that he is using for his other maladies might have given the doctors a challenge in the control of the anticoagulants he was given for his emboli.

Remember that whereas as many emboli are secondary to known DVT, often the embolus in the lung presents before one experiences symptoms of the DVT.

sO WE NEED TO STAY WELL HYDRATED AND EVEN WHEN SEATED KEEP THE FEET MOVING AND THE CALF MUSCLES IN ACTION.

Sparman is a high risk taker of the highest order. I think that this is just the nature of the beast. When doing interventional procedures I am told that one should have an open heart surgical team on stand by, can anyone of the Sparman supporters/ handles/ apologist please let us know what Sparman does to ensure such coverage is in place? I notice no one has taken me up on the fact that his new clinic is a fire hazard. Why am I not surprised?

Sparman back up was in Trinidad in earlier days. He also had an Air Ambulance on standby at least that what he told me. I am not sure if it is the case now since he told me about a year ago that his relationship with the other local doctors had improved considerably and that the QEH and Dr Harris was now his backup. So I guess that was not true.
He also told me that he was a bajan when he first came here and met with me and some colleagues so right now I don’t trust anything he says.
He also told me that he don’t do difficult angioplasties not the ones that require more than 2 stents. Although my CMO has indicated that the protocols use by Sparman would not be allowed in the USA that is of not having an open Heart Surgeon on Standby when the angioplasties are being performed. Maybe that is why he no longer practice in the USA
I know someone who was suppose to have had 2 stents place by Sparman but further test did not show the placement of any such stents. That person has not paid the outstanding balance which is more than $10,000.00 and Sparman has not pursued it after he was threaten with legal action. Incidentally that person use to sing Sparman praises before.

He is NOT a qualified and certified cardiologist and so cannot practice this medicine in the US nor Canada – only in Barbados where standards are slack!!! Please kindly note that it is against the laws of Barbados for a doctor to promote himself by on television. A doctor is allowed to advertise via a shingle of a certain size using only two colors. If as reported CBC is affording Sparman the pportunity for self-promotion, this is indeed a shame!

Dr. Ronald Henry (T&Ts leading cadiologist) washed their hands from Sparman over 3 years ago. At this point in time Sparman carries out his procedures with NO back up. As a result this exposes ALL of his interventional patients to the situation where they have no coverage. I do not know how the Minister of Health could feel comfotable about such.

I am told that when intervention is planned – i.e. angioplasty or the placement of a stent – an open heart surgery team must be readily available. GP can confirm. On the other hand I can confirm that Sparman currently does not adhere to this requirement.

The Sparman matter is a side issue but an issue nevertheless. The spectre of political influence/intervention alluded to in Ishmael’s letter speaks to a bigger and more serious problem which if solved can impact how Sparman type issues are managed in the future.

I WAS NOT THAT FORTUNATE……. but I know that 74 class was a great one and that many of its members have made, and continue to make a great contribution to health in Barbados. I confess and acknowledge that I learned a lot from members of class of 74 in my early clinical development , and that these doctors have faihfully discharged thier duty according to the tenet of 2 TIMOTHY 2:2. Not only did they learn well, but they also communicated what they learned well. What more can one expect from them?

I have a difficulty with the name Sparman
The name itself instills fear
It looks like Spear man and I get images of a spear and a man running down somebody with a spear trying to stick it in their rear. Is it a BURNING SPEAR or is it a flaming spear ? What the frig (other four letter curse word deleted) is a Sparman
I have a problem. I am confused -
This Sparman thing got me cufuffled -I am confused
Somehow I like I dont like this Sparman Sparman Sparman Sparman Sparman Sparman to the Bar man looking for a Car man to spar with down by Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra -Gaga Lady Gaga caught in a Bad Romance–Sparman sounds like trouble.

Dear David:

Did you notice that Dr. Conrad Murray the man who is implicated in Michael Jackson’s death is to go on trial soon?

He is being charged with administering an anesthetic to Jackson, and Murray is a cardilogist, NOT an anesthesis.

And do we remember a couple of doctor’s her in Barbados who were found an inquest to bear some responsiblity for the death of a young woman. And the doctor who administered the anesthetic was NOT an anesthesis.

So what am I saying?

Dr. Sparman is NOT a cardiologist.

Are we waiting for a little “accident” to happen?

And what if that “accident” happens to a litigatious American tourist.

I think that you will find that the drug Murray gave is in more than one classification. He is saying that MJ took extra drugs after he gave the drug.

Note that all UWI students are taught to give Basic Anaesthesia. Wont say more here.
