Day 6
12:10PM
6.00AM
Work was stopped last night at 9PM when the cave became too dangerous. Looks like the VOB report of all bodies found was premature, there is fourth body which has been sighted that means there is one more body to be located. Excavation is expected to recommence at 7AM this morning. (see Nation Report)
Day 5
9.00PM:
Voice of Barbados (VOB) is reporting that all the bodies may have been recovered. The nation is waiting on what is expected to be the final press briefing from Minister Marshall.
7.00PM:
According to the latest report a third unidentified body has been extracted from the rubble and a fourth body has been sighted. In the latest press briefing Minister Joe Atherley confirmed that Cabinet this evening gave the green light for a comprehensive risk assessment geo-technical study to be carried out in the immediate area and beyond. Minister Barney Lynch announced that an emergency fund has been established at Barbados National Bank and a number of Trustees named to manage the fund. No decision has been made regarding the reopening of the two schools (St.Cyprians and St.Pauls) in the area. Looks like after the Cabinet this evening Minister Marshall’s branding of the area Ground Zero was vetoed and replaced with Hot Spot!
Work continues under the threat of bad weather which has been forecasted.
6.00PM:
The recovery effort has been hampered by rain and equipment breakdown, the cave has also become increasingly unstable. The recovery effort has recommenced in the late evening and BU remain hopeful that the remaining three bodies will be found soon.
1.05AM:
Voice Of Barbados (VOB) have reported that two bodies have been found, a male child and an adult female (subject to confirmation from the forensics team). Minister Dale Marshall in his report to the Press on location has also advised that recovery efforts have had to be stalled because of unstable conditions in the cave. At the early hour of this report there is ongoing discussion on how the Recovery Team should proceed given the current conditions; reports also indicate that the Rescue Team has had to dig almost 65 feet to recover the bodies in what has been described by the Miami Search and Rescue Unit two days ago as a very unstable environment in which to work. Again, BU extend our sympathy to the family and friends of the Codrington family, and also wish to remember all those families who have had to be displaced because of this tragic circumstance at Arch Cot, Brittons Hill, St. Michael.
An emotional account of a visit to “ground zero” by Barbadian Blogger Cheeze-on-bread gives a chilling insight to proceedings at the not too long ago sub-urban village:
The sad story of Arch Cot
Well, we’ve moved into day four of the Arch Cot, Brittons Hill tragedy. After praying that the Codrington family would be found alive, I’m now hoping that the bodies of the five members of the Codrington family will be recovered so that their family can have closure to this tragic event.
After spending several hours at Brittons Hill yesterday, I just wanted to make some observations and ask some questions:

Day Four
Workers waiting on one section of the ramp way as the apartment complex was demolishedThe significant part of Day 4 was spent stabilizing and preparing the cave for the extraction of the bodies of the Codrington family presumed to be dead. Two large boulders which were a threat to the safety of rescuers were finally removed. Minister Dale Marshall in a late evening press conference advised that “the rescuers were entering what is the most challenging psychological part of this recovery effort. We have given them ideas of what they can expect and we hope that our efforts are successful”. The Rescue Team is currently removing rubble from the cavern.

Also see video of the destruction of the building which the Codrington apartment was attached located on a cave.
All Barbadians begin to prepare to enter the next phase of mourning which the extraction of the bodies will no doubt trigger. It is a mental state which they are becoming use to in the month of August 2007.
Day Three
Picture submitted by a reliable friend. The picture was taken by Steve Sandy, it shows construction or excavation works going on in the area immediately behind(?) the collapse. From what little I’ve heard and know, the construction or excavation was in progress before the collapse Source Pull! Push!
It is Day Three and the recovery effort to find the bodies of the Codrington family (Donavere 30, Cassandra 27, Shaquanda 7, Shaquille 3, Yashiro 1) will move forward in earnest. The partially collapsed apartment building was deliberately knocked down yesterday evening (Monday) to remove the threat to the rescue team. Barbadians are this morning full in the realization that the family is dead. The cadaver dog utilized by the Miami Dade Search and Rescue Unit sniffed two areas in the cavity where dead bodies are possibly located. Minister Dale Marshall in a press conference late on Day 2, he confirmed that two large boulders are currently slowing down the rescue effort and plans are afoot to deal with the problem.
Here is a link which shows some pictures of the rescue effort taken from Local10.com website.
Day Two
A rescue team from the Miami Dade county coordinate their help in the search for a family of five that is missing after their apartment complex collapsed in the St. Michael parish near Bridgetown, Barbados, in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 27, 2007. The apartment complex began collapsing early Sunday and one unit fell about 50 feet into a cave, Barbados Attorney General Dale Marshall said.
Minister Dale Marshall and Prime Minister Owen Arthur confirmed what the nation did not want to hear at a Press Conference this evening. The sophisticated equipment used by the Miami Dade Search and Rescue Unit which flew in last night confirmed that they have detected no signs of life in the cavity. What BU suspect was a very hard decision was made to switch from rescue to recovery mode. As we write this update the recovery effort has been hindered because of the instability of the wall of the cavern in the area. Steps are being taken to accelerate the collapse of the unstable area.

Our country mourns for the Codrington family.
Day One
It has been just over 10 hours since the report of a building which collapsed into a cave in Brittons Hill, St. Michael. It seems from all reports coming from the PR officer of the Barbados Police Force that it will be a long rescue complicated by a roof blocking the effort. Barbados Free Press and Pull! Push! have been facilitating comments from the public who are expressing their concern for those missing and to the concerned family and friends.
BU take this opportunity to express our hope that all the occupants are rescued safely. Our heart especially goes out to the children thought to be covered deep under the ground.
The current situation has driven someone who is described as Erica Hall B.Sc. Civil Engineer, to submit the following document extracted from the FEMA website which details how the area where buildings with suspected structural defects are located should be efficiently managed. They have asked that the information should be sent to the rescue personnel involved at the Brittons Hill site if at all possible. This accident is similar to the 6 coal miners currently trapped in Utah as we write.
Our thanks to Bajan Reporter for forwarding the information.

Wonder who is going to take responsibility for building over a known cave system? Isn’t that a major failure of engineering?
We have no idea why your comments are being moderated. We suspect it might be in your name!

First of all my heartfelt condolences to the affected families. My hopes and prayers are with the ones who were trapped in the collapse and who remain missing (and may be possibly dead).
Secondly a BIG SLAP in the face of those stinking shameless animals at Barbados Free Press for the filthy comments they have been posting about this incident while innocent people are suffering at Brittons Hill.

A time of national tragedy is not the occasion for those mindless animals at Barbados Free Press to use the misfortune of innocent Bajans as another opportunity to wallow in cheap filthy political statements.

According to the latest Press Conference The government of Barbados has taken a decision to request assistance from the USA through the resident Ambassador. The experts in search and rescue are expected to be on the ground at 8.30PM tonight. Congrats to the government for making a quick decision. The next official Press Conference is scheduled for 11AM tomorrow 27 August 2007. Assessment of the wider area is still being undertaken to determine if wider evacuation will be required.
Check CBC website for the latest.
Again our prayers go out to all the victims.

It appears that one of the places where residents from Britton’s Hill are being evacuated to is in the government constructed Senior Citizens Home located in Vauxall, Ch.Ch which has been closed for the longest time.
This means that accommodation should be reasonable.

We at Barbados Free Press Exposed thank you at Barbados Underground for maintaining a HIGH STANDARD OF DECENCY in the way you have reported on this tragedy at Brittons Hill.
Sadly and unfortunately, but NOT UNEXPECTEDLY, the filthy vultures and morally-corrupt crapauds at Barbados Free Press have continued to feast on the misfortune of the victims by playing politics with this tragedy and pushing propaganda about the building of FLYOVERS in Barbados. Sad to say that it took a tragedy to expose such stinking low-minded animals.
We at Barbados Free Press Exposed call on all decent Bajans to stand together and pray for those poor children and adults who up to this hour remain trapped underground at Brittons Hill. We do not know if they are dead or alive, and we continue to monitor the news updates from CBC and VOB who still have teams on site even now (10:00 pm Barbados time). Wherever you are on this globe, please say a prayer for these victims, especially the children. The names of the victims were released in an earlier news report, and most/all of the children are under five years old.
Please show some decency and don’t let us behave like those shameless stinking pigs at Barbados Free Press.
As true Bajans we must support each other in times of need.

Is there any real hope of getting these victims out alive?
David // August 27, 2007 at 12:32 AM
It is well after midnight and reports suggest that the building is now being stabilized by the forces on the ground to facilitate rescue efforts by the Miami Dade team. This well sought after team said to be #3 in the world in search and rescue has responded with amazing speed to a request issued only a few hours ago from Barbados. It is also filtering through that residents are upset that volunteers were not allowed earlier in the day to effect a rescue.
It looks like it will be a long night for the Condrington family who by our count has been underground for 18 hours now!
David // August 27, 2007 at 2:20 AM
It is 2.15AM EST and the Search and Rescue Team from Miami Dade has indicated that seven traps must be put in place to stabilize the unstable property. At this hour the team is working to place the second trap in what has been described as a tedious task.
Keep your prayers coming!

I’ve just gotten home (about 2 AM). Where I was is of no importance (The Gap), where I drove past, however, is.
Without thinking about and realizing it, I found myself in the Brittons Hill area, enroute to home. I stopped for the lights somewhere in the Dalkeith area (sorry, I’m not good with places). These are the traffic lights just before the Brittons Hill post office. Going straight would’ve taken you past the post office. I was waiting to turn left. I looked ahead and saw two huge yellowish, cranes towering above all else. Bright, white light flooded the surrounding area. Lights that reminded me of the National Stadium at night. It’s a scene that’s impossible to miss.
From my position, the cranes appeared motionless. No audible sounds of activity either, at least, none that my ears could discern. I made a left turn and then a right at the next set of lights. Drove past the Shell(?) gas station on my right. Another view of the site. Again, the two huge cranes in plain view, surrounded by the flood lights. No motion, no sounds. All quiet.
I had my camera with me and thought about stopping to take a picture of the cranes and the lights. Thankfully, common sense got the better of me and I continued my drive home. Stopping on the road at two in the morning, by yourself, is generally not a good idea.
I don’t know, but I can only hope that, judging by the motionless cranes and stillness of the area, the missing family was found and rescued in time.

24 hours later and the search continues. Reports indicate that members of the Search and Rescue Team have entered the cave and spent up to 30 minutes. Hopefully at 6AM at a press conference to be given by Dr. Brian Charles we will know the very latest.
David // August 27, 2007 at 6:15 AM
We have just gotten the 6AM Press Conference delivered by Dr. Brian Charles Head of Triage, and the status is the same. Two dogs sent down into the cave have returned to the surface indicating no sign of life. A third dog is to be sent down shortly.
A further briefing is expected at 8AM.

Well, I’m never setting foot inside Harrison’s Cave again.
And as for that recently constructed building near the corner of Pine Road in Belleville and Collymore Rock, I will NEVER set foot inside that place or park underneath it. It’s a blue building with a HUGE section which is raised up in the air, apparently with room for parking underneath. What scares me every time I look at it is that it is only supported by TWO PILLARS, one at each corner. Could Barbados Underground please check that out? Coming into Belleville from the traffic lights at Collymore Rock, it is on the left at either the first or second avenue. Visually, it does not look structurally sound.

Persons have been asking on this, and BFP, where are all the caves in Barbados. There must be hundreds of caves, and I do believe that a Government Department should have that answer. However, I can point you in the direction of Mr. Keith Laurie, who knows a lot about “Above Ground Barbados” and “Underground Barbados” (he is my cousin!).
When I was MUCH younger, I was an avid “spleedunker” (not sure if that is the correct spelling), or, the British term, “potholer”, and I was one of a party, back in 1971, led by Scandinavian Ole Sorenson, who went down into Cole’s Cave. On one of Ole Sorenson’s explorations into Cole’s Cave, he discovered Harrisons Cave. At another time, I, and some other foolhardy idiots, went into a cave just under Durants Village, somewhere in the vicinity of the ridge above Appleby Gardens, St. James. One of my friends go stuck and we had to drag him out backwards by his feet. I have not done any potholing since then! There is another cave (probably many more, in fact) in the Widley area, just under a rise where Rediffusion had its relay station many years ago. Bim is full of caves.

So can you tell me the status of Barbados with regard to the importation of dogs into the island, we were once considered a Rabies free island hence only dogs born and raised in the UK that is also a Rabies free country would be allowed into the island, anything other than this dogs originating anywhere else were sent to the UK for quarantining, has our status now changed with the allowing of these dogs into the island.
I have no problem under the circumstances that they were brought in but it must change the Rabies free nature of the island once these animals set foot on Bajan soil, under the former head of the department who would get very hostile if an in transit dog was offloaded on the baggage belt without the necessary import licensing being issued.
Any comments?
Reporter // August 27, 2007 at 2:54 PM
I think this is first incident of its kind in Barbados so I do not think people should be panicking and fear mongering.
What I think people need to focus on is this. When large structures are being built do the Govermnent not require Engineering studies and soil tests be done which includes drilling into the bedrock? These tests when done by competent outfits can quickly tell if you are building on an unsuitable surfaces. And after all we are told Barbados is very progressive and developed and take safety seriously so I suspect all of these are being done! Or do you think not? Really!
And while we are digesting that what about Sir. Roys claim that the steel being used in the Four Seasons Pagoda is not up to standard. For Sir. Roy to make a statement like that he must have some facts or else he is doting, but what assurances have Barbadians, Pemberton et al been given by the Government that Sir. Roy is not being truthful or is delusional?
And while on that thought think about this. When Sir Roy made this serious allegation what were Barbadians told by the agency in charge of quality control on things like steel being used in buildings? Did they not say that Barbados had standards for things like steel and other products but it was not “COMPULSORY” to meet them! Am I dreaming here or have what I said correct?
These are the things we need to focus on!
Fred // August 27, 2007 at 4:13 PM
Reporter I seriously question the standards in place at the Coconut Creek site of which Patterson is a main shareholder and developer, if he is prepared to accept inferior quality steel at the Paradise project has he also accepted lesser quality materials at the Coconut Creek location in his effort to reduce his building cost ?
I doubt that MrTrotman was kidding when he made it public that the steel imported and being used at Paradise was of an inferior quality to what is expected with the British standards.
Cost and saving money is the prime concern in a project of this magnitude and scope, and they are doing their best by employing the illegal Chinese workers and using 2 nd grade raw materials steel being but one of them.
Question is Coconut Creek sinking because of inferior quality products or because this too is being built on a cavern or the two combined?
Reporter // August 27, 2007 at 4:21 PM
Fred that is exactly what I mean and you are right.
An allegation as serious as the one Sir. Roy made should have been treated with the utmost of urgency.
Having said that if Barbados has in place standards for steel and other products but they are not compulsory what does this tell you my friend?
Fred // August 27, 2007 at 4:28 PM
The truth is that we may have two different of standards in place one for Paradise and one for the others.
Have you noticed that the subject has not raised its head since then and it may never raise its head again unless it is raised on a site such as this one.
Paradise is obviously operating on a different level than most other construction sites on this island and is immune to the things that other contractors find annoying or a hindrance.

I had no intention of commenting on this caving in at Brittons X road however I must comment that the AG Dale Marshall has threatened the rain for the entire day and has been slowing the process down in expectation of rain, the most recent satellite pictures indicate a very small patch of cloud south of Barbados not likely to affect us in the least so why hold up the rescue effort we know that there was a strong voice after the collapse let us press ahead in the hope of a rescue.
Come on Marshall stop grandstanding and getting TV coverage lets get on with the job at hand and attempt o rescue at all cost, these TV and radio appearences achieve little in helping those that need help now not lip service.
Do you want private enterprise to perform the exercise and save your gov’t workers from the may fall rain?
Reporter // August 27, 2007 at 4:51 PM
Wishing let us be responsible here and not political.
Satellite images are not entirely reliable in indicating the actual weather at a precise spot as in the disaster area.
I also doubt that Dale Marshall or anyone else would be so foolish as to lie when so many people are in the area of the disaster.
We cannot and we must not allow this tragedy to be turned into a political circus. We must respect the victims while showing empathy and sympathy to their loved ones.
Wishing in Vain // August 27, 2007 at 5:25 PM
Reporter not at all political but we are idling while time is critical.
Right on the money, this is an absolute waste of time while they are posing for the press capturing a photo opportunity the effort is being misplaced and delayed, get into the job at hand get into the rumble, all I have heard so far by Owing, Marshall are excuses not to get deep into the task at hand, get digging surely anything that was going to fall would have fallen by now my god lets get to digging and searching and stop the press posing, lives are at stake, get a hundred civilians on the job and see how the boulders the rocks will get moved out of there in a hurry.
Marshall every time you have opened your mouth you threaten the rain and making prepartaions for the rain that was supposed to fall at 1.00 o’clock it is now after 5.00 o’clock and no rain yet get on with the task and try to save a life or two.
Stop making excuses for not knowing what to do and let someone take the lead and deal with it, you are rambling and doodling while lives are to be saved.

At 5.30 pm and once again another press opportunity for Marshall, he is now reporting in true American style as he said he is reporting from Ground Zero, once again another excuse to getting the task at hand done, more expectations for rain.
I said before let loose a 100 men on the job and see how soon these people will be located, the minister is delaying and playing around milking this accident for all it is worth, instead of getting dug into the job.
With every minister on candidate on location trying to get their picture in the news, give them a few shovles and let them do something for once in their lives in the house.

Let me add on the public record that I unequivocally support David Thompson and the DLP Party and I have tried in spite of being personally and publicly insulted, to do whatever I can to help his and the DLP cause. First it was Margaret Knight now it seems to be Wishing in Vain and the BU who is on the attack!
I supported David Thompson because he and me share a common responsibility to be fair, honest above board in our dealings with all! There can be no exception because of politics.
That is why I will not be a part of condemning anyone as being liars or being negligent in their responsibilities in trying to save human life. I refuse to accept this as human decency.
No human would lie or do anything that was not in the best interst of saving the lives of human beings especially a child. Politics are not a part of this tragedy!
Idealist // August 27, 2007 at 6:13 PM
Politics may not be a part of this tragedy, Reporter.
But crisis management and decisions under pressure by our leaders have to be.
Whatever judgements have been made will be analysed at leisure by the electorate who have vested their own security with these same elected representatives.
Their opinion on the handling of this catastrophe may not be political but will have profound effects in the days to come.
Reporter // August 27, 2007 at 6:14 PM
For God sake bimbos in Utah they just had a cave in in a mine and in Utah they have every modern resource to deal with this catastrophe and rescue the miners did they? Does that mean they deliberately were not doing their best? How ignorant can people be in Barbados?
This is the first of its kind of a disaster of this type in Barbados and it was neither prepared for or has the erquipment to deal with it. Use your damn heads!
Why then turn this sad situation into making the loved ones believe, that all that can be done is not being done! Lord have mercy is it not obvious to you people when you say the rescuers and those responsible are not doing their best how much grief and hurt it is inflicting on the families of the victims?

Lets all get real about this situation and the results so far.
The A G Doodle Marshall has made more TV and press appearences than most movie stars make in a year, and what does he have to report on the incident well maybe the rain was going to fall at 1.00 o’clock today and they were sandbagging in anticipation of this major downpour, then at 5.00 pm he has now decleared a wall looks like it wants to fall in, well if he waits much longer I am sure that the rains will come within this week and if we play around much longer the wall will fall in thru ageing and the natural process of time and the elements.
The point here is instead of him making a concerted effort to get into the site and start a real removal of the rubble we are getting nowhere fast, he is milking this to the point that Bush milked the Sept 11th World Trade Centre buildings collapse, this recovery that Marshall is supposely overseeing is being compared to the effort at the WTC.
Marshall this is a small project on the scheme of things not to be compared to the WTC collapse so please do not drag your feet any longer in setting to work, but instead the family would like you to cease the camera moments and instruct people to get into action.
Worry about the rain when it falls, worry about the sun when it shines (as this will be the next likely drama moment for him as they will report that the sun is shining tomorrow and it is too bright to have crew working)
Having to much political help here is becoming more of a hinderance than a help, were this left to the residents of the area these people may have been located already but instead we have two days rambling and waiting and wishing for rain.
The residents are willing ready and able to move in and do their bit but the police state we now operate in put a halt to that effort.
This cannot be tolerated much longer and results need to seen now not a week from now and yes if you continue to mess around it will be safe to conclude that they will only be bodies left to remove from the ruble but there is still hope for living ones even now so wake up and get to work get out of your office and set things in motion for swift action and quit the PR monents, the family needs your help in real terms not in lip service.
Barbados Free Press Exposed // August 27, 2007 at 11:07 PM
The rains have started to fall tonight in Barbados.
Not too heavy where I am at the moment.
A VOB report from the site just said that the rain has started falling at Brittons Hill.
Barbados and the islands of the eastern Caribbean are under notice of a WEAK TROPICAL WAVE.
So much for Wishing in Vain and the other vultures at Barbados Free Press who are shamelessly trying to use the tragic deaths of the Codrington family for political play.
Barbados Free Press Exposed calls on all decent Bajans to reflect upon this tragedy and pray for those whom we have lost.
Barbadian Beauty // August 27, 2007 at 11:25 PM
My thoughts and prayers are with the family and close friends of the Codringtons. And also with the residents of that area.
The rest of us need to be more thankful for the many blessings that we have. If you haven’t told the people you care about how you feel about them lately…do it now before it is too late. There might not be a tomorrow for some people.
Live life to the fullest…Love God, Love Yourself and Love Others!
The following well wished was received from this couple in the BVI via e-mail:
Much prayers and love goes out to the entire nation of Barbados from your Barbadian natives living in the British Virgin Islands. This tragedy is still so surreal and hard to digest. We trust that God’s healing will manifest in all of our lives as we live on to see another day. May the nation of Barbados draw closer in the love of Christ as we all mourn together in this grave time.
From hearts of love

Nearer to the point Ask Sir Allan Fields if he did not have the engineer throw in the towel at the Spring garden site as Sir Allan overruled the engineer when they were building the offices and warehouse there, the engineer found a big cavern and instructed them to use more steel and concrete in the site and Fields told him not to that it was uncalled for the engineer walked off the job and Fields built it minus the steel.
So expect that to dissappear soon to.

Frankly speaking, all those POLITICAL STATEMENTS which you have been trying to stir up are VERY DISRESPECTFUL to the Codringtons and their suffering family members.

See you escaped a ban at BFP and you are now on here with your brand of nonsense, my comments are not disrespectful to anyone of the family involved in this accident, but are solely directed to the AG who has loathed on this matter for 2 days to long.

We have access to several different computers all over Barbados and also in other countries. Anonymous proxies, pre-paid internet cards, web cloaks, internet cafes… they can only chase shadows.
The rain has started to fall… HARD.

************************************
There you are BFPE. If investigated, you could well have save some other peoples’ lives by your post above, so keep posting. A little bit of criticism won’t kill anybody!
David // August 28, 2007 at 5:11 AM
BFPE~so to not confuse readers can you stick to using one name and leave Wishing in Vain alone :-) Thanks. We don’t have the time to be referee all the time and we dont want to complain to David Thompson for you!
David // August 28, 2007 at 6:13 AM
Any word on the story circulating that the construction responsible for construction in the area of the apartment lost a jackhammer when it fell into a hole?
Anonymous // August 28, 2007 at 7:37 AM
David
I have refrained from this debate about persons using other names, howerver I would like to say this:
When you told BFPE you would report him to David Thompson,I am curious if this is because he is the said David Allamby who told Barbados Free Press that he is not returning then came back under a differnt name and was banned.
He said he was not returning to Underground, and now at BFP we have discovered that he is the same person using the name Reporter and Green monkey.
Is this person the same BFPE?
Any way my point in all of this is – that over time we have come to recognise certain names and their contributions -recently there seems to be attempts to muddy up the waters and for one person to post multiple comments – ususally ‘off topic’ – which knocks off other comments on the comments list or changes the debate completly because foolishly some commentators respond to the nonesense.
This is very tiresome to me as a reader who enjoy BU and while for the most part I ignore it,I think you will have to seriosly look at how you deal with this long term – because it will be very destructive.
One of the hazards of blogging I’m sure.
Bimbro // August 28, 2007 at 7:51 AM
Hi BU, may I make the same suggestion to you as I did to BFP:
I’ve often thought it a pity that you don’t run a proper online discussion forum alongside your blog. Often related subjects crop-up from your blog comments which one would like to discuss but are unable to do so because it would be ‘off-topic’, if you see what I mean.
Can you give serious, consideration to this suggestion. Now that The Nation’s forum has effectively, ceased I think that Bim deserves more than one significant discussion forum. I’m sure that your friends at ‘Tell It Like It Is’ would be happy to give you the gen. if you needed them to!
geographer // August 28, 2007 at 7:54 AM
I suppose a situation like this would have happened sooner or later.
It could be a perfectly natural occurrence, precipitated by groundwater extraction, that is common in karst regions (any place with limestone geology, riddled with caverns like a swiss cheese). This process, called cave roof collapse, produces what we call a collapse-doline or collapse-sinkhole, and occurs when the cavern roof can no longer support itself. Sometimes this occurs due to a loss of pore-water pressure or bouyancy when groundwater is extracted, though they are other, more natural, causes.
Other causes could be of a seismic nature, where construction, for example could set up tremors that could destabilise the cave roof.
This particular collapse will likely be found to be due to a combination of factors.
Most of the dolines in Barbados are solution dolines and are not as dramatic as this one. In Jamaica and Belize there are several spectacular collapse holes. This process of collapse is common in Florida and South Africa today, and sends up home insurance premiums.

I read what Notes From the Margin blog site had to say about BFP – and it only confirms what I secretly thought.
I believe that he was very unfair in his decsription about BFP being reckless intheir articles.
Like all the other blog sites here,or even newspapers and radio and t.v. – BFP will get it wrong from time to time .However I can state with certainty that BFP are usually right on the button with their leads, although from time time – you get the sense they are throwing out a sprat to catch a whale.
BFP has always been generous in their coverage of Notes from the Margin and fair in their comments.
I have always believed that this said Notes from the Margin – is a BLP plant sent to put a ’supposedly reasonable ‘ alternative to what BFP post.
Question- Have you ever noticed any serious, indepth criticism of this administration behaviour, and examples given of its corrupt practices by Notes Fron the Margin?
Persons who comment on these blogs put themselves at risk in this vindictive, power crazy enviroment that we currently live.
The owners of these blog sites can go checking up on who posts – but the bloggers are at the mercy of the blog owners – trusting them to operate with integrity.
The fact that bajans continue to post to a blog site – where the owners are anonymous – just tells us of their determination to ‘put wrong things right’ in this society once again.
The fact that Notes from the Margin will see it fit to add ‘Barbados Free Press Exposed’ on their blog list – to me speaks volume – and forget that explanation he gives of ‘encouraging free speech’ – like everything else – there are lines that might be drawn.
After their nasty attack on cliverton on BFP – and their constant haranguing of ‘Wishing in Vain and others I would have thought that adding them to the list as a credible site would have been the last thing on any blog owner’s mind.

Wishing in Vain // August 28, 2007 at 8:42 AM
Lets seriously hope that today Marshall allows the crews to press ahead with their effort to rescue or retrieve the persons from the collapsed building.
We have played around for two valuable days while he forecasted rains that never came, while he and the rest of his cabinet took the photo opportunities that presented themselves.
Enough doodling Marshall instruct the rescue teams to go full speed ahead and lets get this thing done and dusted give the family closure to this affair.
There will many better times to gloat for the press not lets use this time any longer as one of those times, get them to work or let the residents or ordinary citizens get the job done.
David // August 28, 2007 at 9:00 AM
Wishing in Vain, read the back page of the Nation today. The EXPERTS have stated that the cavern is extremely dangerous. Also there is a quote from a strutural and civil engineer who confirms that the collasped building and others in the area are on a fault line. He predicted that BABCO is in trouble as well. The issue of bad physical development of Barbados is one that successive governments should take blame.
Wishing in Vain // August 28, 2007 at 9:11 AM
So are we to continue to hold out to see if it will fall or are we going to be proactive and address the problem and move on?That is my issue, they need to take action one way or the other but to doodle is going no where, if the buildings need to be removed get to the task but stop messing around and do some positive work the people need to feel that there are working seriously to get to these people or bodies.
We are also being made aware of Coconut Creek suffering the same fate with their roof top swimming pool adding to the weight of the multi storey building it is now collapsing into a cavern.

That is a LIE.

With land becoming more scare each and every inch will eventually be utilised despite of the risk and challenges involved.
Wishing in Vain // August 28, 2007 at 10:38 AM
They opt to move the few squatters at the end of the airport under the guise of affecting the radar when this is proven lie but we have no laws guiding the building on coral cliffs ?
Do you think that we have double standards in play in this island or what ?
The adjoining lands by these squatters has been granted TCP permission for development but the squatters have to leave why?
Is it beacuse it would affect the value of the new development ?
This building collapse may be the front edge of more of these things taking place if we look at Allan Fields and his overruling of the engineer on the site to then reduce the steel and concrete in the erection of the Spring Garden bond and offices, then the Coconut Creek project that is reportely sinking as well, and if we are honest with our selves we will see Paradise doing likewise with their use of inferior quality steel and also building on caves as well.

Wishing in Vain // August 28, 2007 at 11:10 AM
I see in the press today that residents were ready and willing to assist but the police sidelined them for whatever reasons, then we have Marshall making the most of the opportunity of the press but he is making very heavy weather of this effort, his recovery effort is being compared to the recovery at WTC.
Were the Town and Country Planning Department aware of this cave and the risk involved in allowing persons to build there? or was money involved in this decision making process.

Wishing in Vain // August 28, 2007 at 2:29 PM
My point from the very start was inept action was going to cause further stress, it is blatanly clear to me to see that the help of those willing hands may have been able to save a life or two, we have treated this as a photo opportunity rather than a life saving one.
Yes you certainly right they have made the most of the TV and press time they all have made themselves visible on the press sadly when they should have stepped aside and let the people that know what they are about carry on with their effort.
To update you, the Dade team have already departed the island so we are on our own once again at the mercy of the AG and who ever else he pulls together.
I saw ordinary people work during the floods to rescue persons without the involvement of CERO, Mass casualty response unit, Dale Marshall,Prescod, PM, Police or Fire service and these Bajans responded beyond the call of duty and saved lives, children were taken out on the shoulders of adults to safety, now were we to have a flood the Police guns would be pointing at you, the Mass casualty response unit would be saying do not touch them we are in command here, so to CERO, PM, Marshal, Prescod, Fire Service so what is the message here ?
Too much administration at play here looking to make the most milage with the press for political points and ultimately votes sadly this is how it appears to John Public.

Anonymous,
NotesFromTheMargin is not a political or a scandal blog. It will not always agree with BFP, BU, BLP, DLP, PEP. We reserve the right to criticise (or agree with) anyone.
There are times that I have agreed with what BFP has said, and I have said so. In the same article I complement them for an excellent job on their coverage of the Brittons Hill disaster.
It would seem to me that some people are just as intolerant of divergent opinion as they accuse the government of being.
If BFPE continues to hurl invective it will sink very quickly. However I’m hoping that they get serious and add to the discusison.
The more divergent opinions we have in the blogosphere the healthier the discussion will be. BFP appreciates that point, I just wish all of their readers did as well.

Many years ago, when the “Gully was out,” one knew that the rain water came from St. Joseph, passed Waterford Bottom, and overflowed into the Gully in Carrington Village as it sped into the constitution river. Local experience knew that the gullies, pathways, caves etc all played an important role in a well organized ecosystem.
I believe that in the name of progress we have made or accepted decisions without due regard for the power on nature. This recent tragedy is another wake up call. We must not only regret the lost of life but ask of ourselves some fundamental questions so as to avoid greater loss and economic chaos. We have been very fortunate that recent hurricanes have smiled on us. Construction over the years have blocked many of our water paths. Some of our gullies have become dumping grounds. I hope that we bring in the engineering and environmentalists rescue teams now to examine drainage etc and not wait for a tropical down-poor to flood away dreams. Issues like these must remain outside the political divide with everyone shouldering some responsibility.

I beginning to get very agitated when I hear and see these ministers like Marshall, Prescod, Arthur and Lynch forever posing for the camera moments, this situation is far more deserving of serious attention that the posturing that these fellows are doing.
We are being subjected to an almost hourly press release, during each of which all we are hearing is how trying the conditions are, well hell we expect them to be trying but give me a break, let the residents get to the job and find these people if the ones that are paid to do the job are either too scared or being held back from doing so.
Meanwhile Marshall and Prescod gloat and get to squeeze in yet another press release to say what ?
That conditions are hard and the equipment is suffering from fatigue, what a load of bull, it is too serious a situation to be called a comedy but if I did not know better I would have no choice to assume that it was a comedy.

Straight talk // August 29, 2007 at 9:03 PM
A word from a very experienced Fire and Rescue Officer expresses my frustration at the delay in rescue.
He posted a longer comment yesterday which was not accepted.
To all the first responders.
I have just witnessed the worst example of rescue I have ever experienced in my life.
I am a retired professional firefighter and I cannot express how deeply I am disappointed with the Barbados firefighters’ response to the recent tragedy at Britton’s Hill.
When you take on a job that requires you to place your life and limb at risk that is what you do.
I went to work every day knowing that I may have to give up my life so someone else could live, this department has shown that they are not willing to get their hands dirty no matter how many lives are at stake.
The time delay they waited for some “Dogs” to arrive may have been the very time those victims needed to be rescued.
Did one member of Barbados’ group of heroes attempt to go into the hole?
Did one member say”your life is worth more than mine “ so I will risk all to save you my brother.
It does not appear so to me.
If I am right then this department needs to be retrained to the level where a call for help doesn’t result in a bunch of guys on a red truck becoming another group of spectators.
SNIP
The motto of my department was “ Fight fires and save lives “ and I have sadly seen demonstrated that the motto here from all first responders is “ stand around and do nothing “
Did no-one at the scene calculate the collapse zone and establish the risk factor for attempting a rescue operation.
I was not at the scene and don’t want to second guess the officers who were in control but after so many hours surely someone had to be able to make a command decision.
I sincerely hope that I or one of my loved ones does not have to rely on the “ first responders “ of this nation because they have again demonstrated to me their complete lack of professionalism and dedication to the people they purport to serve.
I write this in the sincere hope that the members of the Barbados Fire Brigade and all other first responders are deeply insulted and wish to bring themselves to a level where their brothers around the world would willingly stand beside them in the knowledge that they are truly among the bravest to serve their fellow man.

Apartment removed to protect workers
Web Posted – Wed Aug 29 2007
After two straight days of work, fatigue of rescue workers, and the instability of the remaining apartment building formerly inhabited by the Codrington family work was slowed down at Brittons Cross Road.
On Monday night and early Tuesday morning, the rescue effort had to turn away from the recovery efforts and towards removing the remaining parts of the apartment building that still hung perilously above the heads of the workers.
Also a point of major importance, was the creation of a ramp – an entranceway into the cave – that allowed heavy vehicles to enter the cavern and remove the debris in a faster manner than had previously been removed.
Attorney General, Dale Marshall spoke to the media at 11:20 p.m. on Monday night, and explained the reason for these new tactics. “Over the last few hours we had to carefully reassess our tactics and strategies as we had the opportunity to create an entrance into the cavern.”
He explained that the straps which had been previously holding up the remainder of “Shalom” apartments, which had housed the Codrington family and others, were going to be removed so that the apartment building could be removed.
Horrifying Crash
Previous to the demolition, residents were allowed to remove furniture from the collapsing edifice along with those from surrounding houses. With help from members of the Barbados Defence Force, everything from large appliances to the smallest mementoes were removed.
By 9:30 p.m., officials from the Barbados Light & Power were seen removing wires from the apartment and the huge crane was removed from the area, signs that the demolition would soon begin.
The media was allowed a bird’s eye view of a massive arch, which was created during the excavation. Minutes after, during a press briefing, Apartment three, which was hanging precariously on the edge of the cavern, went crashing into the hole unceremoniously.
While some officials and security personnel were clearly shaken and surprised by the collapse, Marshall stated “[the crash] was not unexpected,” and later disclosed that the debris from the building did not affect the areas where the remains of the family were expected to be found.
“We marked out the area where the cadaver dog says there is the presence of human remains. The fall of that weakened section was a vertical fall, and there was no significant amount of debris on that area”.
A backhoe was used to clear a path and create the ramp at the back of the apartments. The demolition took place in less than one hour.
The operator of the monstrous machine spared some effort to save a loan chair, which rested eerily on the back balcony of one of the apartments. There was a collective sigh of disappointment when he was unable to save this seemingly sentimental piece of furniture.
At the end of the demolition, only a pile of concrete and twisted metal remained.
What followed were several hours of work; including the careful destruction of the apartment building and the assembling of the ramp.
However, work was stopped due to fatigue of the workers at 3:00 a.m. with work scheduled to restart later this evening. (KG/JH)

This incident leaves many question that need attention, how did TCP permit an erection on this site ?
How was it a survey was carried out on the residents not advise to evacuate the area ? Why was this used as publicity weapon and for media exposure to the extent that it was with Lynch, Owing, Marshall (the worst of the lot) Prescod pickling the press with their images ?
Why would Noel Lynch choose to laugh when asked about the state of the family?
I think that this was a callous display of bad manners and in extremely poor taste, he ought to be censored for this stupid insensitive display of bad manners.
Why has it taken from Sunday to Thursday to retrieve these bodies, I even heard the AG state that work was going to be halted if the rain came down again this morning and his equipment fatigue statement is in a league by itself.

My heart goes out to all those involved, this tragedy has been horrific on so many different levels in regards to the country as a whole and those in leadership positions. I seem to have so many questions and it just seems as if no answers are forth-coming. I am not sure if anyone here may be able to answer them as those in charge of the operation are not doing so.
Some of these questions are:
If that is where the sniffer dog indicated how are they going to accurately know where the other 3 bodies are?
How far down under the rubble was it possible for the dogs to smell?
David // August 30, 2007 at 8:05 PM
Some clarification is needed based on the latest press briefing. Did we hear correctly that the trust fund has been set-up for the sole surviving child of the deceased family? If we heard correctly then what about the two children of Donavere Carington from a different relationship?
Why no definitive decision on the two schools in the area? Certainly they can’t have schools opening in the area with the geo-technical study outstanding.
Lastly why were Lynch and Atherly present at the briefing to utter 1 minute contributions?
BFPE // August 30, 2007 at 8:56 PM
Anonymous,
YOU ASKED: “If that is where the sniffer dog indicated how are they going to accurately know where the other 3 bodies are?”
YOU ASKED: “How far down under the rubble was it possible for the dogs to smell?”
The rubble is being removed by hand now, since they have reached the (highest) level where the bodies are located.
That pile of rubble DOES have a bottom, you know.
Two more bodies have been found today, and at least one of them was recovered.

David, The ruling party has sadly and poorly used this sad event as a media get me votes ploy.
The question you ask about Lynch and Atherley is valid but here again get me in front of the camera and it will get me some votes.
When will we learn that this is neither the time nor place to make this a vote catching event.

Wishing in Vain,
You have TRIED DESPERATELY and FAILED to turn the deaths of the Codringtons into a political opportunity for yourself.
The best you can do now is shut your mouth and stop LYING.
What Barbados has seen at Brittons Hill is a government that acts with responsibility and a government that cares.
The report from Brittons Hill exposes more of your foolish LIES.

Five days to remove bodies from this location?
Stopping work in expectation of rain maybe coming ?
Stopping work because of equipment fatigue ?
Lynch laughing when asked what he would say to the families of the bereaved?
These would be comical were the situation not as serious as this one was.
True and sadly the gov’t Lynch, Owing, Marshall, Prescod saw and have used the coverage of this event purely as a media publicity exercise figuring if you kept the thing ongoing you would have that much more time on the airwaves and press and TV coverage, sad when people opt to use a situation that is as dire as this one was for their own political mileage.
I am certain that they were many that were much better able and equiped to brief the press on latest development rather than a barrage of ministers.

Hooray, Hooray, Hooray, They have just reported that the last body has been retrieved, thank god for that.
Now maybe just maybe the constant bombardment of the public with the insensitive Lynch, Marshall and Prescod with their media grabbing antics will be halted and no more of those hourly photo opportunities.
My compliments to those that worked thru this trying period to retrieve these bodies my only regret that it was bodies that were retrieved instead of living persons, may they rest in peace.

I have been listening with a great deal of interest and my sympathies go out to the families involved. I had hoped you would have shown a more responsible and “partiless” presence during this time. All these arguments and insults are surely beneath you… tsk. As for Noel Lynch… Clearly he was in shock just like the rest of us as nowhere in our recorded history have we seen anything like this in Barbados and the implcations are indeed extremely serious. When you were having your two and three storied homes built, did you take the time to carry out the now obviously necessary seimographic tests? There are many caves, and many people who have either failed to listen to advice or were very naughty indeed. Sleep well tonight all ye merry gentlemen.
